many, have invented certain, Improvements in Buttons, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to buttons of that class which comprise a body portion upon which is molded a plastic covering of wear resisting material. y I
An important feature of the invention consists in the provision of a core having a projecting boss formed upon its lower surface which is engaged at its periphery by the wear resisting material. This covering therefore terminates in an annular shoulder which abuts against the boss so that the center portion of the lower side of the button is left clear and free of the covering. Within the periphery of the boss the shank passes into the core, in no place coming into contact with the covering. The advantages of this construction are two-fold. In the first place by stopping the covering material at a point just within the edge of the lower surface of the button a considerable saving of material is effected over those buttons wherein the entire surface is covered. In the second place, in a button of the class described bending of the shank will have no tendency to displace or loosen the covering as would be the case if the shank passed through the covering in entering the core.
Still another feature of the invention relates to a novel configuration of the covering material. As herein shown this is molded so as to give the apperance of being formed of woven twine or ribbon. This appearance may be secured by pressing into the covering depressions of proper shape during the operation of applying covering to the core. By reason of this feature there results a saving in covering material because substantially the same amount of wear is withstood by a; covering having alternate raised and depressed portions as by a covering of a uniform thickness equal to the maximum thickness of the covering of the button herein described. A button having a surface of this character moreover, it is found in practice, will not become so readily unfastened as a smooth button. The core 2 may be formed of any light and easily worked material such, for eX- ample, as papier mach. The general shape of the core is hemispherical and it has a circular boss 6 projecting from its lower surface. The shank 8 which is formed of round wire bent into the proper shape, enters the core through the surface of the boss 6 within its periphery. At the center of its upper curved surface the core 2 is provided with a recess or depression 4.
The wear resisting covering 10 of celluloid or other pyroxylin compound is molded upon-the core extending entirely over its upper surface and engaging the periphery of the boss 6 by an annular shoulder. The shank 8, therefore, enters the core at points which are free of the coveringmaterial so that any bending of the shank or movement thereof due to looseness will have notendency to dislodge the covering material. The surface of this covering, it will be observed, is continuous and intact, being terminated beneath the button by an annular shoulder.
The upper surface of the covering 10 may be molded into any desired configuration for purposes ornamental or useful. As shown in Fig. 3, which illustrates a preferred configuration, the covering is formed with alternate raised and depressed portions which are scored in such a way as to give the button the effect of having the surface of Woven material. As already pointed out, such configuration results in a saving of the covering material. It improves the general appearance of the button and by giving it a rough surface renders it less likely to become unfastened than a smoothly finished button.

Having. thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 0f: the United States:
1. A button comprising a solidnon-metalliccore having a continuous, conveXly curved; upper surface and a circular boss projecting from its lower surface, a plastic covering molded upon the core, forming, a continuousunbroken, covering over the entire upper surface of the core with an unbroken curved lower edge, and terminating at the periphery of the boss, and a shank entering the core within the periphery ofthe boss and clear ofthe covering.
2. A button comprisiuga core with conveX- surfaces and a relatively low boss projecting from its lower surface, an eye with its shank entering the core within the pe riphery of the boss, and plastic covering molded upon the core and forming a continuous unbroken covering over the entire surface of the core except that within the confines of the boss, said covering having its outer surface provided with alternate depressions and elevations presenting spaced areas of thick wear resisting material.
