Description

W. E. GRAY.
COPY HOLDER ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE WRITERS. APPLICATION FILED JULY 27.1915.
1,244,322. Patented 00. 23,1917.
' ATTORNEYS 'WILLIAIVLERNEST GRAY, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO GRAY AUTOMATIC'GOPY INDICATOR 00., 0F BOISE, IDAHO, A CORPORATION OF IDAl-IO.
COPY-HOLDER. ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
Original application filed April 11, 1914-,
To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that. I, XVILLIAM, E. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Chicago, in thecounty of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holder Attachments for Type-Writers, of which the following is a specification.
My present. invention relates generally to copy holding attachments for typewriters, and more particularly to improved means for supporting a copy holding plate, of the nature shown and described in my co-pending application Number 831,327., filed April 11,-191 l, of which the present application is a division. .7
The object to be accomplished by these improvements is the rigid and eiiective support of the copy holding plate in such manner as to permit of its being readily and quickly adjusted when desired.
In the accompanying drawings showing the means employed,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of the copy holding plate, showing a part of my improvedsupport.
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectionzthro'ugh the central portion of the copy holding plate, illustrating the adjustable and detachable connection of the upright stem therewith.
Fig. 3 is a similar view through the upper;
portion of the supporting base, and
Fig. -1 is a perspective view of the central portion of the copy holder plate and its detachable bracket, which provides for the adjustable connection of the upright stem, the latter being shown in detached relation.
Referring now to these figures, and more particularly to Fig. l, the line indicating bar 10, the details and mode of means of actuation of which are described and claimed in my application above referred to, carries a letter indicating member 11, the said bar 10 and said member 11 being controlled, from a typewriter (not shown) through flexible connections 12 and 13, and said member 11 being, also controlled by a tension device 14 to which its flexible connection 13 is attached.
The line indicating bar 10 works up and down on the copy holding plate 15, which plate is, according to my present invention, mounted in vertically adjustable relation Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct, 23, 191-7.

tical or slightly inclined position.
Thus, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, the base 17 has a centrallv upstanding and transversely apertured lug 18 through which isv extended an eye bolt 19, the lower end of the upright stem 16 depending through the eye of this boltadjacent one side of the lug 18, and the opposite end of the bolt being tireaded to receive a wing nut 20 having a single wing 21 extended to form a handle.
In this manner when the nut 20v is rotated in one direction, the lower end of the stem 16 is forced tightly against the adjacent side of lug 18 and clamped in immovable a relation, irrespective of whether'the stem is in truly vertical or inclined position.
Rotative movement of the wing nut 20 in the relatively opposite direct-ion operates, of'
course, to release the upright stem and permit of its entire removal or of its adjustment, as desired. a
In. the adjustable connection between copy holding plate 15 and the upright stem 16, as seen in Figs. 2 and 4, I eliminate all necessity forriveting and spot welding by upsetting portions of the plate 15 rearwardly at its center to form vertically spaced and horizontally projecting ears 22 and 23, the upper ear 22 having a central opening 2 1 of substantially the diameter of stem 16, and the lower car 23 having a cen tral recess 25 extending inwardly from its edge, and small apertures 26 therethrough at opposite sides of the recess With the ears 22 and 23 thus constructed, is adapted to cooperate a bracket 27 having a curved body and upper and lower extensions 28 and 29 adapted to lap the ears 22 and 23 respectively as clearly seen in Fig. 2,
the upper extension 28 having an opening 30 for registry with the opening 21 and the lower extension 29 having a central recess 31 to cooperate with the recess 25, and upwardly projecting side lugs 32 for engagement within the apertures 26. In this manner the stem 16 may be projected through the recesses 25 and 31, and through the openings 24; and 30, and may be clamped at the any desired point by means of thunib screw operating through the central threaded aperture 3% in the body 27 oil the bracket.
Thus it will be seen that the bracket 27 as well as the upright stem 16, may be wholly detached from the copy holding plate 16, in addition to providing for the vertical adjustment ot'jthe copy holder upon the stern when the parts are in the operative position as best shown in Fig. 2-.
I claim:
1. In a copy holder attachment, the combination of acopy holder plate having rearwardly upset ears spaced vertically from one another, the upper car being provided with a central opening and the lower ear having a central recess and apertures upon opposite sides of said recess, a curred bracket having lateral extensions lapping the said plate ears, the upper extension being provided with a central opening and the lower exten sion having a centralrecess and side lugs detachahly engae'ed within the side apertures of the lower plate car, an upright stein extending loosely through the recesses and openings of the said bracket extensions and plate ears when 'alinedgand a clamping screw threaded through the body of the bracket and} engagcable with the said upright stem to secure the copy plate in adjusted position on the rod, all for the purpose described.
2. In a copy holder attachment, the combination of a copy holding plate having rearwardly upset ears spaced in a vertical direction and one of which is pro *ided with anopening, a bracket haying extensions at its ends, one of which is provided with an opening to aline with the opening of the said ear and the other of which extensions is provided with means for detachable engagement with the other ear, a supporting rod loosely mounted through the alined openings of the said extension and ear, and a thumb screw threadedthrough the body of the bracket and engageable with the supporting rod to secure the copy holder plate in adjusted position thereon.
3. Ina copy holder attachment, the combination of a copy holder plate having rearwardly upset ears spaced in a yertical direc tion, a bracket ha ring end extensions lapping and paralleling the said ears of the plate, a supporting rod, said ears and said extensions liaring apertured portions through which said rod is loosely mounted, and also having mutually engaging means to support said bracket and prevent displacement thereof, and a clamping screw threaded through the body of the bracket and engageable with the supporting rod to hold the plate in adjusted position.
r. In a copy holder, the combination of a copy holder plate. having rearwardly upset FRANK B. Fosrnn, H. RV. RICHARDS.
