To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY R. VAN Dn- VENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumter, South Carolina, in the county of Sumter and State-of South Carolina, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Generator-Lamps, of
which the following is a specification, reference being -had to'the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to generator lamps particularly designed for use on bicycles or the like.
The objects of the invention are to provide a simple and eflicient generator lamp in which all of the moving and more or less delicate parts are effectively housed and protected; also to provide a supporting device capable of holding the rotatable shaft of the lamp either in operative or inoperative relation'to' the vehicle wheel or other rotating part of the vehicle on'which the lamp is supported; also to provide a support which will permit the lamp to be adjusted so as to assure that theaXis of rotation of the rotating armature and its shaft lie in a'plane intersecting thezcenter of the wheel of the bicycle.

.At the lower end of the body portion 4 there is another end plate 9 which is formed tion of the casing and 'this end plate is formed with a cup-like collar 11 which incloses and carries a bearing 11 for thearmature shaft 2. The bearings 7 and 11 may be of any suitable ball bearing type. The shaft 2 projects below the bearing 11 and a driving wheel 12 is secured thereto by a set screw 13. The driving wheel has a projecting part 14 which is adapted to engage the tire or rim of the bicycle wheel for rotating the armature shaft. This driving wheel 12 is also formed with a projecting sleeve 15 which overlaps and completely houses the lower bearing 11-and prevents dirt and dust from getting into the bearing.
2 there is a sleeve 16 which is' secured to the shaft by a set screw 17. This sleeve is threaded to form a socket for the lamp 18. The sleeve 16 projects into a reflector indicated at 19 in the drawings. This reflector is firmly clamped to the casing of the generator and is provided with a sleeve 19 on its lower side fitting over the cup-like collar 7. The lamp is carried at the upper end of the sleeve and is located within the reflector. The end plates 6 and 9 are held on the body portion of the casing by a rod 20 which extends through the end plates and is provided with a nut 21 at one end thereof. Extendingthrough the end plates, 6 and 9 is a'supporting stud 21 which carries a lug 22 at its lower end and a nut .23 at its upper end. The casing is freely armature out of engagement with the wheel 1 5 .of the bicycle, it is held in this inoperative or oif position by'a yielding pin 25 carried" by a tubular arm 26 attached to the stud "21 and this yielding pin slips by the post 20l The pin 25 has a head 25 at its inneren'd 'll o Patented Oct. 23, 191 7.

From the above description it will be ap parent that I have provided a generating and lighting .device consisting of few parts which are simple in construction and which are free from all loose connections and movable contacts, inasmuch as the lamp is carri'edl directly by the armature shaft and electrically connected to the coil on the armature shaft. The hearing at the lower end of the armature shaft is completely housed by the driving wheel. The casing surrounding the armature and the field magnet is of simple construction and easy to manufacture.
It will be seen that by turning the link 27- about. its bolt 30 and by turning the stud 21 about the pivot bolt 29, that the lamp may be moved toward and from the center of the bicycle wheel, which permits of positioningthe lamp for any size wheel without shifting the brackets 31, 32'. Furthermore, by swinging the stud 21 about the pivot 29, I am able to bring the axis of the armature into a vertical line passing through the axis of the bicycle wheel, and thus bring the armature shaft into a plane intersecting the center of said wheel, and so insure the free and easy running of the driving wheel Two adjustments may, therefore, be readily made, one, a shifting of the lamptoward and from the center of the wheel and the other a shift ing of the axis of the armature so as to bring it into a plane intersecting the center of the wheel.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in. the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A generator lamp comprising a magnet, a vertically disposed armature rotating therein and 'having a shaft projecting at both ends beyond said magnet, a casing inclosing themagnet and having top and bot-- tom cap plates, each having an annular outwardly extending collar through which the shaft extends, ball bearings located in said.
collars,.a drive wheel on the lower end of y the shaft provided at its upper end with a sleeve inclosing the lower collar, a reflector having a neck or sleeve on: the lower'side fitting the upper of said collars, a lamp mounted on the upper end of the armature shaft to turn therewith and extending into the reflector, and electrical connections for the lamp leading to the armature winding.
2. A generator lamp comprising a mag net, a vertically disposed armature rotating therein and having a shaft projecting at both ends beyond the magnet, a casing inclosing the magnet and having topand hottom cap plates, each having a cup-like col- I lar through which the shaft projects, ball bearings located on the shaft within said cup-like collars, a drive wheel secured to the lower, end of the shaft and formed with a sleeve inclosing the lower collar, a vertically disposed reflector having a neck on its lower side inclosing the upper cup-like collar, a lamp mounted on the upper end of the shaft to turn therewith (within the reflector, and electric connections for the lamp leading to the armature winding. 3. A generator lamp comprising a magnet, a casing therefor, an armature rotating in the magnet and provided with a shaft having an operating wheel, a lamp in electric connection with the armature winding, 21. post or rod extending through the casing, a pivot stud for the casing, a spring on the stud engaging the casing to swing it inwardly and hold the drive wheel against the operating means, and a yielding detent mounted on the stud and at its outer end adapted to engage said post or rod to hold the drive wheel away from its operating means.
'4. The combination with a generator lamp casing having upper and lower cap plates, of a bolt or rod holding said cap plates together, a pivot stud in rear of and parallel with said bolt or rod, a spring on the stud. engaging the bolt or rod to swing the casing in one direction, and a yielding detent mounted on the pivot stud and adapted to engage said bolt or stud and hold the casing against the action of said spring.
5. The combination with a generator lamp having a vertical armature shaft provided at its lower end with a drive wheel'for the purpose described, a pivot stud onwhich the lamp is mounted to swing laterally, a spring on the stud pressing the lamp laterally to bring the drive wheel into operative relation with a bicycletire, a link adjustably pivoted at its forward end to the lower end of said pivot stud by a transverse pivot, and a bracket for the bicycle fork, to which bracket the rear end of the said link is adjustably pivoted by a, transverse pivot, whereby two adjustments of the lamp are alforded as described.
6. A generator lamp for bicycles and the like, including in combination, a generator,

A generator lamp for bicycles or the like including in combination, an armature, a V-shaped field magnet associated with said armature, a casing including a body portion and end plates inclosing said armature and field magnets, seid end plates having"beerings for the armature shaft endthe armature shaft projecting beyond said hearings, a driving Wheel secured to the lower end of said armature shaft and having a projecting sleeve housing the adjacent bearing, a sleeve attached to the upper end of said armature shaft and having a, socket for a lamp, a lamp fiXedin said -socketand Totating W-ith said armature, and a reflector sup ported by the casing. and surrounding the lamp.
