Description

UNITED STATES-PATENT OFFICE.'
JWILILIAIVL iC'.'s'r'NvENs,or AK'RQN, oH'Io, AssIGNoR :no PIEnCEWRAPIINGNACHIN COMPANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION or ILLINOIS.
` Original application filed Aug-ust 19, 1912, Serial No. 715,745. Dividedand 1915. Serial No. 30,038.
i .Be-itknown that I, VVILLIAI C. jrn`vnNs,
a citizen of the United States, and allresident of the city-of Akron, in the county of Suininit and State of Ohio, h-ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folder -Devices for lVrap'piiig-Machines; andvI do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ,o f the same, 10 reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the .numerals of reference marked thereon, .-which form a part, of this 2,0 which'forins Aa part of a Wrapping machinefor appli'fing aj'spiral wrapping or Winding oi'. coveriiig strip such as paper aboutv annular'bodies for example automobile tires, .coiled vi re andthe like, or upon long cylindricalbodies such as pipe, rods, or other objects capable Lof receiving such a Wrapping;
It is an object of this, invention yto conl struct a folding device used in combination with a creasing rollerwhich acts to crease the strip of paper drawn through the folder, 'creasing the same as it is led around said "roller, the roller of course permitting the strip to leave the shuttle for application to the articleatf'any angle for different relative positions'of the shuttle and the article with- '-out requiring readjustment of the parts'.
It is also anobject of this invention to `construct a'folder device which is pivotally mounted adjacent a creasing roller adapting 40 the paper' wrapping to be drawn through' 'tail 10.y of' said detent'lever extends aroundl the folder device and creased upon the roller and then led to fthe article to be' wrapped.
It is furthermore anobject'of ithis inven-I tion to construct an improved form of folder 1:5 device which co-'acts with aspring `plate to afford a tension mechanism for' the'paper drawn through the folde-i` before` being folded;
" It'isnally an important object of this invention to construct a device simpleinfconstruction and operating veflicientlv to perform the purpose for which it is designed. The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

The niaiiisectioii of theshuttle,'which is:
a lclosedI ring when in condition for operation, is denoted as a wholebythe .refer-1 ence numeral 1,'and hinged thereto is a secvt-1on..2, to permit opening of the shuttle for insertion or removal of .the varticle to be wrapped."` ,Said .hinged section *2, is piv-f tions jl, onbothsides thereof forming a yoke adapted to receive therein a tongue ineinher 1.- A pin 5, extends transversely lthrough saidl projections 4, and is jadapted to `holdy .the ends of the 'shuttle sections engaged ywith one anotlier, thus insuring 'a true`pe" vriphery for the shuttleunder all conditions when the hinged'section is closed'. l V Means are provided 'for `^locking` said hinged sectionjin closedpostionl I For this -purposefa notch Slis provide-.din the shuttle l,on the inner periphery' thereof, "and piv-Y 90 otallv supportedl bv means of1a-bolt'7g'exl 5^; tending radially from the inner sidefinto. said hinged section Q; ofthe 'shuttleis a swinging detent 8, having"a finger 9"adapt-F ed to engage in said notch. shown in-Fig. 1. Then it is `desired to ref of the detent lever` thus releasing the lock; ingcnd ofjsaidv detent leverrwhereuponQthe saine may be swung laterally, carrying the finger 9, thereon,'out of the/notch 6, and past no mitting the shuttle to be opened. Mounted i aglip 21, integral with the outer foldand. turnedl'over the inner fold. The opposite. end of said'nozzle is wider and fla-ring to' receive the paper orother material therein. Said nozzle is secured on said bracket plate 17, in'any suitable manner with .the tapered end of thel nozzle directed outwardly. Mounted adjacent said tapered-end of the l foldingl device and set in the faceof the shuttle isa stud shaft 22, which is inclined slightly, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower end .23, of said stud shaft engages perpendicnilarly through thewall or face of the shuttle,`
anda nut 24, is provided thereon, which 'may bel loosened to permit an adjustment of the upper angled -portion 22, into any desired position. Journaled onl said stud shaft 22, is a roller 25, orif preferred, the'.
stud shaftmay ,be' merely rounded or provided with a convex, surface over which the paper or other wrapping material may be drawn to the article to be wrapped. .A
washer 26, the opposite surfaces ofl which.
are inclined conforming to the angularity of the portions 22 and 23, of the stud shaft, is engaged upon said stud 'shaft between said roller 25, and theface of the shuttle.
The operation is as follows:
The paper or other wrapping material is drawn from the reel through the folding nozzle 19, around the guide roll 25, and thence to the article, and when the shuttle is rotated of course the wrapping material is appliedv to the article. The pivotal l mounting of the folding nozzle 19, by means of the bolt-18, on the face of the shuttle, permits the nozzle to properly7 aline itself between the roller 25, and the periphery of the constantly decreasing reel of paper 1G. As clearly shown in .F ig. 4., at the entrance end ofthe'folder nozzle the inner fold plate vover which the lip 21, extends, is rounded at its end beneath the -Haring epfl of the upper fold of the plate, so that an easy eutrance for the wrapping material is pro The roller 25, may be adjusted into "'itions by loosening the nut 24, se oper operating position of the ith respect to the article being rol-ler :25V W wrapped'may be easily secured.
I am aware that various' details y-efcon d struct-ion may bevaried through' a .wide
range without departing fromthe principles 'of this invention,.and I therefore do not' purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as .my invention: i
1. The combination withv a shuttle and paper carrying means thereon, o'f a 'folder device pivotally mounted-upon. said shuttle, and an adjustable creasing memberadjacent thereto to crease the folded paper leaving said lfolder device. j
2. In adevice of the cla-ss described. the combination with a shuttle and paper carryingv means thereon, of a movably mounted folder device .and an adjustable rotatable creasing member for the paperfolded by said device, said folder device adapted to lautomatically aline itself in position between said creasing, member and the paper carrying means as the direction of feed of the paper from said means varies.
3. In a device of the class.. described the combination with a shuttle anda paper feedA ing lmeans thereon, folding mechanism to 'fold the paper led from said means, and an adjustable-.creasing member inclined at an angle with respect to the surface` of the shuttle to crease the foldfin the paper, said folder mechanism so constructedas to antoli matically aline itself into proper position between said means and member as the direction of feed of said rpaper changes with a decrease 1n the supply thereof.
4l. In a device of the class described the' combination with a shuttle and a paperfeeding mechanism, of a pivoted folding device for said 'paper mounted to automat` cally adjust itself to said mechanism as the direction of feed of the paper to said device. varies. i
5. 'In a device of the class described `the combination with a shuttle, of a paper folding device pivotally mounted thereon, and a roller adjustably mounted in an inclined position on said shuttle adapted to crease the folded paper proceeding from said folder device andled to an article being 6. In a device of the class describedthe combination with a shuttle, of lnu-hanism movably mounted thereon acting autoinatically to aline itself with the line of feed of paper fed therethrough and to be folded thereby.
