APPARATUS Fon ELEvATrNG enn'townnmefrrrn BEARINGS or no'ifA'rING DEvIcEs.
' To all whom t may concern:
Be it' known'that I,GILBER'r1F. I-InLsoN, a subject of theKing of Great Britain, but having declared my intention ofbecorning afcitizen of the United States, residing'at the borough of Manhattan, 'int-them city, county, and State of New Yorlnfhave invented an Improvement in 'Apparatus for Elevating and Lowering the Bearingsl'of- Rotating Devices, of' which the `following is a specification.
My invention relates toan apparatus for elevating and' loweringthe bearings-of rollers, and is particularly designed foruse in connection f with: an; apparatus `for press-v ing corks into :the necks of bottlesywhich corks have previously'been'.lightly inserted into the mouths of the bottles by hand `asI the bottles are delivered from a [illingapparatus upon a eonveyer band traveling over a stationary. table, .and the object of the invention is to providefor adjusting'the pressing roller to act upon corks in bottles of dierent heights and to hold the bearingsofthe rotating roller stationary when so adjusted and during the pressing op# eration.
l In the accompanying` drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation'illustrating my invention, and y FigfQ is a plan view of the same; Y .Similar reference numerals indicatelike. parts throughout the several views. f
10 indicatestwo upright side. frames op-z positely disposed, one on each sidey ofv a table 11. The bottoms of these framesm'ay be secured toa flooring or base, but I prefer to fasten them to theV table byfscrews or.
bolts 12 as shown. The table 11 is provided with legs y13, which are preferably secured to the floor or base 14. i j
The side frames 10 each consist of two spaced apart upright members 15, 16 connected at the bottom by -a cross-piece 17,
from which project spread legs 18,v connected at the bottom by the cross-piece 19. These several parts of each yside frame are preferably made integral, although they may be separate pieces properly secured together if desired.
The facing-.sides of the members 15 andv 16, in each side frame are rabbeted as'at 20 on their vertical edges, and between these members 15 and 16, there is a block 21, upon two opposite sides of which there is a ver- Specication Qf Letters .Patentj vPatented 0ct.23, 1917. Application filed J'u1y29, 1916) Serial No. 112,021. l l' l l i Upon'one-fend ofi the shaft Zethere-is'a drivepulley 39 to whichrotary movement 1s limparted from any `suitable source. i
A:The outer surface of the cylinderror roller 25 'may be roughened-or corrugated or coverediwlth feltor other brous materiah'but.
I prefer to cover it with rubber 26, having a.
ribbed orV corrugated `outer surface.
Centrally located in the top of each block 21 rthere is av vertical .hole 4into which is secured a bushing 27 Y interiorly threaded, and below said hole the center of the block is cut out *leaving a vertically ,elongated opening 28. i
-29 indicates two screws, one 4for each block 21, one end of each of which is screwed into one of the threaded bushings 27, in said blocksu.:` g 1 The upper. ends of these screws pass throughholes in .the top cross plate 30, one adjacent each end, which plate is secured to the top of the1uprights.15 ..and 16 byL bolts 31, or in any other suitable manner. Tfhisfcross .plate C30 extends outward from said. uprights predetermined distance at each-side where-itis provided a-t each end with` a right angledupward projection: 32', each provided with a hole throughwhich pass the'ends cfa horizontal' rod 83, upon the projecting end of which isl fastened a hand-wheel 34. f
vUponv the upper endof each screw 29, there isnlreyed a bevel gear 35, in gearV with the bevel gears 36, keyedto thefhorizontal rod33. 1 i37 indicates a conveyer band passing over rollers 38 (only one .of which is-shown). 'Ihe shaft of the driving roller forthe band is provided with a drive pulley to which rotary movement is imparted from any suitable source.
In the top surface of the table 11, I preferably form a longitudinal channel 40, within which the conveyer band 37 is received and travels, thereby preventing any lateral displacement of said band.
The directions of rotation of the roller 38 and cylinder 25, are indicated by the arrows, and the cylinder is regulated to rotate at the same speed at which the'conveyer band travels.
42 designates Y a chute leading from a bottle filling apparatus notqsh'own), and down said chute the filled bottles 43 slide onto the conveyer band 37.
In the bottle filling apparatus employed by me and in connection with which I make use of my present invention, four alined bottles are filled simultaneously, and afterward slide down the chute 42, in the same line, the chute being provided with four guide ways 44, 45, 46, and 47,. one kfor each bottle, and the four bottles therefore pass from the end of the chute onto the conveyer band 37 in perfect alinement or nearly so, and are drawn along toward the rotating cylinder 25, in this order.
An attendantor attendants, provided with a quantity of corks are positioned at one or both sides of the delivery chute 42 and as the filled bottles 43 slide down, a cork 48 is lightly placed in the mouth of each bottle without interrupting its forward movement, and when these corks come into contact with the revolving cylinder 25, they are pressed firmly `down into the necks of the bottles thus securely stopper-ing the same.
rlihis operation does not impede the travel of the conveyer band 37 to any appreciable extent, and the stoppered bottles continue along to labeling and Wrapping devices in the same order. Y
While l have illustrated the cylinder '25 as hollow and provided with spokes 49, secured to the shaft 24, it will be readily understood that the cylinder may `be a solid roller provided with trunnions fitted into the bearings in the blocks 21.
The cylinder 25 may be positioned nearer to or farther from the top of the table 11 yby turning the hand wheel 34 thereby rotating the horizontal rod 33, which by means `of the beveled gears 36 and 35 will rotate the screws 29 within the threaded bushings 27 in the blocks 21 thereby raising or lowering said blocks and cylinder according to which way the rod 33 is rotated, and when adjusted to thel desired position the blocks and roller bearings will remain stationary during the operation of the apparatus.
By the employment of my invention in connection with a bottle stoppering apparatus such as shown and described, the filled bottles after leaving the filling apparatus may be quickly, uniformly and firmly stoppered as they are passed on to labeling and wrapping devices without interruption in their travel.
'I claim as my invention:
