To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIA U. GRIF- nrrn -s, "a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Penns lvania, have invented certain new and use-fill Improvements in Valve Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
Although my invention is illustrated in connection with water closet apparatus in which it is employed for controlling the passage of water to a tank from a source of supply "and from the tank" to a water closet bowl for. flushing and washing the same, it is to be understood that it is capable of application to and for other uses.
One of the objectsof my invention is to provide a construction in Which the operative mechanism Within a valve casingc'on sists of separate parts which may be separately and independently removed for re pair or cleansing purposes without disturbing the other parts. It is also an object of my invention to simplify and cheapen the constructions of valve mechanism of the character to which my invention relates, e Other objectsv and advantages of my invention will be'specifically referred to in the-detailed description thereof which follows or will be apparent from such description;
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one form of a convenient embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that the same is susceptible of embodiment in other forms of construction within the scope of theclaims. V
In the drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of a construction embodying my invention; and 1 Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view take 'on the line 2-1-2 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawings, 1 designates portions of the upper part 'of a water closet bowl and 2 a portion of the seattherefor which is hinged thereto in known manner. Water is discharged into the upper portion of the said bowl 1 for flushing and cleansing the same from adisch'arge pipe 3. The said pipe 3 is connected, as indicated at 4, to a valve chamber 5 which may be described generally as 'of Tsh-ape, The pipe 6 extends from the said valve chamber to a tank no Slip W11; v The valve chaiaber is separated into'tw'o compartments, 7 and 7 by means ofatransversely extending web or pla'te 7 having an opening 8 which extends thereth rou'g'h, as shown, out of alinfem'ent with the openings in which the pipe3 and the pipe 6 are secured. One end of the valve casing, which in the construction shown happens to be the lower end, is closed by means of a flexible diaphragm-like member 10 seated against a shoulder 11 clamped in such position by means of a screw threaded plug 12, the latter having a central opening as indicated at 13. '15 designates a-valve, the stem 16 of which extends outwardly through the hole i The'stem 16 consists of two parts detachably connected together, in a suitable manner, the adjacent ends of which are provided with flanges 18 between which the central portion of' the diaphragm or fie-Xiblemem- I bet 10.is clamped. The said stem includes a reduced portion between the flanges 18 which is situated in a central opening 2O of the flexible diaphragm-like member 10.
Longitudinal and reciprocal movement of the '-valve*stem 16 the valve carried thereby for opening and closing the opening 8 is 'eifecte'd by means of-the' oscillatabl'e outer rear end of a lever 25 pivoted at 26 between the bifurcated portions of the lower end of a support 27, one of the bifurcations only being shown "and the other being in alin'ement there'witln The lower ends of these bifurcated portions rest upon the upper edge of the rear part of thewate'r closet bowl 1, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The upper end of the said support '27 is connected, as indicated at 29, to a bracket 30 having connection withthe valveca'sing-5 and-assists in supporting-the same and r 'eli'eves-the pipes 8 and 6 from its weight. v
The 'lever' 25 is provided with a forwardly extending projection 31 which is adapted to be engaged by the under side of the rear ed e portion ofthe closet seat 2 when the latter is moved downiinto a depressed position upon the top of the water closet bowl. Depression of'sa'id projection causes upward movement of the rear end of said lever 25 which in turn causes the upper end of an adjustable sfcrew stud'32, to contact with the lower end of the valve stem 16 to cause or sneer 'upward movement of the stem together with the valve 15 to close the open-- "The valve 15 is provided with a projecting portion 35 which extends through the said opening 8 and which terminates in a platelike part 36 which is adapted to contact with the ends of projections 37, which extend into the valve casing from a spring pressed plug 38 situated in an extension 39 oppositely disposed with respect to the plug 12, and being in alinement with said plug and the opening 8. The portion 35 also acts as a guide to assist in guiding the movements of the valve 15 to and from the opening 8. The plug 38 is provided with a central outwardly extending projection 40 having a hole 41 therethrough which hole extends not only through the said projection but also through the said plug 38.
The outer end of the projection 40 extends into and is guided by a hollow proj ection 42 depending from the inner side of a cap 43 for closing the projecting extension 39.
A spring 44 surrounds the projections 40 and 42, bearing at one end against the inner side of the cap 43 and at the other against the plug 38 and is normally held under tension whereby it exerts pressure against the plug 38 to hold the same in its innermost or lowermost position.
The inner end of the cap 43 is exteriorly screw threaded to engage interiorly screw threaded end of the extension 39. Said cap is provided with a lateral flange 44 having a depending flange extension 44 which surrounds the upper end portion of the extension 39 when the cap is in closed position. To insure a water tight closure of the cap, packing material 44 is placed inside the annular space formed by the flange 44 and the flange extension 44 against the end of the said extension 39.
45 designates a valve having a stem 46 which extends through the opening 41 through the said plug and the projection 40. The said valve stem is loosely held in said opening. The valve 45 is adapted to rest upon and close the opening 46 which is in communication with a water supply pipe 47 through which water is supplied from any source to the said valve casing and thence through the pipe 6 to the tank heretofore referred to, but which is not shown. The spring 43 must be of a strength sufficient to hold the valve 45 in closed position as shown in the drawing against the pressure of the water through the supply pipe 47.
When the seat 2 is depressed to cause elevation of the rear end of the lever 25 the adjustable screw stud 31 contacts with the lower end of the valve stem 16 to lift the same and, as before stated, move the valve 5 into position to close the opening 8. As a result of such movement the plate like part 36 contacts with the innermost ends of the projections 37 causing outward movement thereof and of the plug 38 against pressure of the spring 44. The pressure of the water upon the inner side of the valve 45 opens the latter whereby the water is permitted to enter the compartment 7 of the said valve casing from which it passes through the pipe 6 to the tank previously referred to.
When the weight or other force holding the seat 2 in depressed position is removed the spring 44 co-acting with the weight of water in the tank againstthe valve 15 de presses the latter thereby moving it into open position which permits the water to flow from the tank through the compartments 7* and 7 of the valve casing 5 and then through the pipe 3 to the water closet bowl 1.
It will be seen that by unscrewing the plug 12 the diaphragm 10, valve 15 and parts connected therewith may be removed for any purpose desired; also that by removal of the hollow cap 43, the plug 38, spring 44, and valve 45 may be removed for purposes of repair or for any other purpose.
The parts 15, 35, 37, 38, etc. constitute in effect a two part spindle, controlling valves for closing and opening water inlet and outlet openings in the valve casing.

In a valve mechanism, the combination of a valve casing having an inlet opening and openings leading from the said casing to a tank and to a closet bowl respectively and also having a transverse plate which divides the said easing into two compartments, said plate having an opening therethrough, and a two part spindle situated in the said casing, one of the said parts supporting a valve which is adapted to close the opening through said plate, and a valve having movable connection with the other 01": said parts, said valve being adapted to close the inlet opening, pressure means for holding the said other part of said spindle in position to hold the said last mentioned valve in closed position and means for actuating the first named partofthe said spindle to thereby cause movement of the second named part to permit movement of the valve for closing the inlet opening into open position.

In a valve mechanism, the combination of a valve casing havingan inlet opening and openings in communication with a tank and with a closet bowl respectively and also having a transversely extending plate dividing the said casing into compartments, said plate having an opening extending therethrough, a valve supported adjacent to one side of said plate for closing said opening, said valve having a projection extending through said opening, a valve for closing said inlet opening, a slidable support for said valve, said support and valve being relatively movable, means for holding the said support in position to close the said inlet opening valve and the said support having means projecting therefrom into adjacent relation With respect to the projection from the first named valve, and means for actuating the first named valve to close the opening through said plate such closing movement causingthe said projection Which extends through said opening to contact With the projections from said support to effect movement of the latter to plate which divides the said casing intov compartments, said plate having an opening therethrough, and said casing also having openings therein in opposing relation to each other in alinement With the opening in said plate, removable closures for said oppositely disposed openings, a valve for closing the opening in said, plate said valve having a stem projecting through one of said closures and being slidably supported therein and also having a projection ex tending through the opening in said plate, a valve for closing the inlet opening, a
' movable support for said inlet valve Which support and valve are relatively movable, said support having a projection which extends into adjacent relation to the projection from said first named valve, and a spring for holding the said support in position to close the said inlet valve.
5. I11 a valve mechanism, the combination of a valve casing having an inlet opening and also having outlet openings, communicating respectively With a tank and'With a closet bowl, and the said casing also having open ended projections and also provided With a plate extending transversely thereof intermediate the said projections and dividing the said easing into compartments said plate being provided With an opening therethrough, a removable closure having an opening therethrough for closing one of the said projections, a valve for closing the opening in said plate said valve having a stem projecting through the opening in said closure and. also having a projection Which' extends through the opening in said plate, a valve for closing the inlet opening, a support for said valve said support and valve being relatively movable and said support being provided With a projection extending 1 inwardly and also provided With a hollow projection extending outwardly therefrom, a cap for closing the other of said open projections the inside of said cap being provided With a hollow boss to receive the hollow projection from said support, a spring surrounding the said hollow projection and the said hollow boss exerting pressure against said support to hold it in position to close the inlet valve, and means for actuating the first named valve for closing the opening in said plate, the projection from said valve through said opening in said plate contacting With the inWardly'extending projection from the said support for moving the said support outwardly to permit opening movement of the said inlet valve.
