To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IKUNosUKn MoRI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manually-Operated Power-Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in manually-operated boats and comprises a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully de scribed, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in. the appended claims.
1 illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which 1-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3--3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the hull of a boat having a steering rudder B at one end, and C, C are levers pivoted at C,'one. upon each side of the boat, and have connections through the rod C and the chain C with the rudder. Securely fastened to the bottom of the boat and projecting clownwardly therefrom are the hangers D and E,
to the lower ends of which the parallel and horizontally disposed bars H are secured and spaced apart by means of the pipe sections I through which bolts J pass upon which nuts J are mounted.
Mounted in suitable bearings in a downwardly projecting portion of the bar H is a shaft L to which the propelling wheels L are fixed, said shaft having keyed thereto a gear wheel L A. second shaft N is also journaled in a suitable bearing on one of the bars H and has journaled thereon a master Specification of Letters Patent. Patentedflct. 23, Application filed'April 2', 1917;. Serial No..-159, 3'32. I
' wheel 0, the teeth of which mesh with wardly curved as at M "and the lower ends of said bars are pivotally mounted upon one of the bolts J. Handles M are connected to the upper ends of said bars M and M. A pivotal pin. P is carried by the bars M and 'M and between which one end of the pitman R is pivoted. Said bars aremounted in an elongated slot T formed in the bottom of the boat, said slot having a suitable wall T about the same to prevent water passing through the slot into the boat.
By the provision of an apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it 'will be noted that the operative mechanism of the apparatus is secured. underneath the boat, the only portion projecting up through the hullbeing the oscillating lever having the handles whereby the operator, by sitting in the boat, may, through the gear mechanism shown, impart an accelerated movew -f e.
ment to the propellers by the swinging of the lever backward and forward.
What I claim to be new is 1'. A hand power propelled boat comprising a hull, hangers secured to the bottom'of the boat, bars secured to said hangers, a propeller shaft journaled in suitable bearings upon said bars, an oscillating lever projecting through the boat, and handles thereon, and pivotal pitman and gear connections between said lever and propeller.
2. A hand power propelled boat comprising a hull, hangers secured to the bottom of the boat, bars secured to said. hangers, a propeller shaft ournaled in said bars, a gear wheel and a propeller fixed to said shaft, a master gear wheel meshing with the gear wheel upon the propeller shaft, an oscilemme a master gear whee]. journaled between said. bars and in mesh With the gear Wheel upon the propelling shaft, a pivotal pin supported by said bars, an oscillating lever pivotally In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
