PUMP.
. Specification bf Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. as, rent.
Application filed October 12, 1916. Serial No.125,205.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAwRnNon H. JnNsn-N, a citizen of the United States, and a resi-- dent of St. Charles, county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new .auxiliary plunger disposed adjacent and Another ObjtECl? of my 1n-- parallel thereto. "ention is the provision of a pump ofthis character wherein the initial movement of the pump piston, during which the compression in the cylinder is only slight, will be faster than the movement of the operating'plunger, while themovement of these respective elements during the intermediate 'or' medium compression period will be substantially equal and uniform, andthe final movement will be such as to causethe piston to travel more slowly than the actuating plunger.
I'prefer to accomplish th'edivers objects of my invention by substantially'themeans and in the manner hereinafter fully de scribed and as more particularly pointed out inthe claims, ref rence beingv had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, wherein Figurel is a vertical side elevation of a pump constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the relative position of the di'verselements when the pump piston is fully elevated about to start the compression operation.
Fig. 2 is a view similar toil 1, showing the disposition of the respective parts when the'pump piston is in an intermediate position. a
Fig.-3'is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the position of the respective parts when the pump piston is fullydepressed.
Fig. 1 is a vertical elevation'of'my invention at substantially a right a'ngleto Fig. 3, with the pump piston fully ,delpressefl.
Referring to'the drawlngs wherein simiinder.
lar reference characters are employed to designate i the respective parts throughout the figures, it will be observed my pump preferably comprises the usual cylinder 5 mounted vertically upon a suitable base or foot-plate 6 and provided with n longitudinally reciprocable-piston rod 7, 'tothe lower inner end of which latter a piston head 8, of usual type, is secured. The upper end of the cylinder is preferably closed by a suitable cap a that atlords an upper bearing or guide for the piston rod 7, and is preferably extended laterally beyond said cylinder, as shown in the drawings, to provide a guide for the operating-handle, as will'be hereinafter more fully described. Mounted on the" foot-plate 6, ad aQent to and parallel with thea-Xisof the cylinder 5, is a suit-able rod 10 tha-teXte'nds upwardly toward and terminatesadjacent the extension of said cap 9. The operating plunger 11 is hollow or cylindrical and surrounds this rod 10 and vertical arm it of said'bell-crankextends t down alongside the vertical member .ofsaid bracket. This bell-crank is preferably made of one piece of metal that is provided with an arched portion 15, through which the pintl'e 16 passes to mount, it upon *the bracket. 12, and the metal is then curved laterally and outwardly to form the arm '13 above mentioned.
The outer or *movablegend of thearm 100 is pivotally connected to the "lower end ofa vertically disposed link or pitman 17, that extends upwardly and terminatesadjafcent the up'per-endfofthe piston'rod' 7 in alatorally bent portion '18, that provides -means whereby said link-is, secured to the upper end of s'aidpistonrod'7. .The'lowerend of the vertical arm of the 'bell crank is provi'ded with an'extensioni19that'engages'a substantially vertically disposed'cam bar or guide 20 secured L to* and extending between the foot-plate 6 and the cap 9 of the cyl- A suitable handle 21 is secured to the upper end of the operating plunger 11 and when the latter is reciprocated in an up-anddown movement, the bracket 12 is likewise raised and lowered, and through the. connecting arm 13 and pitman 17 is adapted to reciprocate the piston rod 7 inside the cylinder. in a pumping operation it is usually the practice of the operator to exert the greatest labor during the. latter portion of the downward movement of the piston and it will be observed when this is done the bell-crank and connecting parts will be in the position shown in 1 of the drawings. As there is but slight compression within the cylinder during the initial movement of the piston tier-inwardly, it is desirable and easier to move the latter quickly or at a greater speed than the speed at which the operating plunger travels. During the intermediate portion of the movement oi: the parts, when the air in the cylinder is under greater or increasing pressure, the cam rod 20 retards the movement of the piston and permits the same to travel at a uniform speed with the plunger. Toward the end of the downward movement of the piston, he greatest compression is exerted against the air in the cylinder and during this latter movement the piston travels at a slower speed than the operating plunger, owing to the fact that the bellcrank arm A is approaching the cylinder at its lower movable end and is consequently elevating the free movable end of the arm 13. llhis causes a retarded movement or a movement of the piston slower than the operating plunger until the end of the pumping action is completed, thus permitting the operator to obtain greater compression with comparatively less exertion than is possible with a single cylinder pump of the ordinary type.
While l have herein disclosed certain specitic means tor carrying out my invention, it, of course, will be obvious to others familiar with the art to which my invention pertains, that modifications or refinements thereof are possible without materially 'departing from the spirit of my invention. 1 therefore desire lb understood that all such changes are contemplated as included within the scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claims.
