To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAF OLsoN, a citizen of the United States of. America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and
' State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new berg and Olson Patent #1,125,684, granted January 19, 1915, and to provide a mounting of this kind which afiords a superior means of tiltably supporting the fan and which is capable of being more conveniently and economically made than the means heretofore used in this type of fan.
' An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying, drawings, in which- Figure 1.is a rear elevation of an electric fan, the mounting of which is constructed in accordance with this invention.

In the construction shown in the drawings, the blower mechanism 5, which comprises the usual motor 6 journaled m a casing 7 and carrying a blade 8 on the shaft 9 thereof, is tiltably supported on a shaftor.
member 10 which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 11 on a base or support 12. A sleeve or member 13 isalso journaled on the support 12, concentrically of the bearing 11, and has formed thereon an outwardly disposed annular flange 14 of wavelike form. The upper face;of this flange provides 'a track 15 on which rollers 16, journaled on the motor casing 7 ,are adapted to travel for the purpose of causing the blower mechanism 5 to tilt back and forth in a vertical plane during a relative rotation of the sleeve 13 and the member 10.
The relative rotation of the sleeve '13 and the member 10 is effected by a gear rack 17 formed on the periphery of the flange 14 and a pinion 1 8 meshing therewith. The pinion 18 is carried on a shaft 19 journaled 1n the'motor casing 7 and by suitable gearing, shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2, connects with the shaft 9 of the motor 6.

The ends 21 of the arms 20 are. doubled back a at the sides of the flange so that the mounting for the blower mechanism overhangs the support 12. Lugs 22, depending from and integrally formed on the motor casing 7, are pivotally connected to-the' arm ends 21 by means of pins 23 so as to support the blower mechanism in position to allow it tobe tilted in a vertical plane as hereinbefore explained. The axis of the pins is located substantially half-way between the crowns and depressions of the flange 14, so that the rollers 16 have the same action on the track 15 whether travellng over the crowns or the depressions. A tubular passage 24 is formed in the shaft 10 through which conductor wires lead from the motor 6 to the slip ring device 25, which constitutes the subject matter of my copendin application Serial No. 112,088, filed Ju y 29, 1916. he of the important advantages of thisdesign' of the member 10 is that itv may be very readily'made in the form of a casting, which is considerablydess expensive than milling the similar member shown in either the'Greenberg and Olson patent or the McEwen patent hereinafter mentioned. Another advantage is that this supportfor the blower mechanism is much more rigid and stable than is the one used in the above mentioned prior constructions.
As shown in the drawings, all means for controlling the relativerotation of the shaft 10 and sleeve 13 has been omitted, this fan employing the same principle of operation as that set forth in a patent of Willard M. McEwen, No. 1,214,198,'issued January 30, 1917, wherein by tilting the blower mechanism up and down in a vertical plane, through the relative rotation of the member or sleeve 13 and shaft 10, gyratory forces are brought into action which cause the fan to swin back and forth in a horizontal plane. he ratory forces cause a reversal of the directlon of the horizontal swinging movement whenever the vertical tiltin movement is reversed, and the rapidity and angular extent of the horizontal movement depends upon the rapidity of the vertical movement.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention hasbeen herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of, this invention as defined by the following claims.
"I claim: I
1. In an air circulating device the combination of a support, a member journaled thereon, arms on said member extending outwardly therefrom and having their ends doubled back at the sides of said support,
blower mechanism, lugs on said blower mechmember extending outwardly beyond the periphery of said flange and having the ends thereof doubled back at the sides of said flange,;blower mechanism, lugs on said blower mechanism pivotally connected to said arm ends, and means on said blower mechanism coacting with said flange so as to tilt said blower mechanism in a plane transverse to the axis of the pivotal connection of said lugs and arms.
3. In an air circulating device the com bination of a support, an outwardly disposed annular flange of wave-like form mounted on said support, a member rotatably mounted on said support concentrically of said flange, arms on said member extending outwardly beyond the periphery of said flange and having the ends thereof doubled back at the sides of said flange, blower mechanism, lugs on said blower mechanism pivotally connected to said arm ends on an axis intermediate the crowns and depressions of said wavelike flange, and means on said blower mechanism coacting with said flange soas to tilt said'blower mechanism in a plane transverse to the axis of the pivotal connection of said lugs and arms. 4. In an air circulating device the combination of a support, a member rotatably mounted thereon. and having an annular track of wavelike form, a shaft journaled on said support concentrically within said member, arms on said shaft extending outwardly beyond said track and having the ends thereof doubled back at the sides of said track, blower mechanism, lugs on said blower mechanism pivotally connected to said arm ends on an axis intermediate the crowns and depressions of said track, and means on said blower mechanism coacting with said track for causing the rotation of said member so as to tilt said blower mechanism in a plane transverse to the axis of the pivotal connection of said lugs and arms.
