ATTACHMENT non srioE-sTiTo'HIne MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Oct. 23, 1917.
Application filed September 6, 1916. Serial No. 118,708.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ABRAHM KRISBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Shoe-Stitching Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for the needle plate of a shoe stitching machine of theChampion or other type, to be used as a means for retiring or rendering inoperative the knife or cutter ordinarily used on such plates when employed in sewing leather soles, as a means of embedding the stitches. It has been found in sewing rubber soles that the use of the knife or cutter is unnecessary andthus disadvantageous in that it involves more or less injury to the sole, and'therefore it has been the practice to substitute a knifeless needle plate when changing from one character of work to the other, but as this involves loss of time owing to the accuracy with which the knife plate must be set, it is the purpose of thisinvention to provide means for concealing the knife or cutter so that the work'can proceed practically uninterruptedlyj Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, it being understood that changes in the fornn'proportion and minor details of construction, within the terms of the claim appended may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings illustrating one embodiment of the invention,
Figure l-is a sectional view of a portion of a shoe stitching machine showing the needle plate in its operative position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the attachment embodying the invention applied to the needle plate.
Fig. 3 is a planview of the attachment shown in its operative position.
The device consists essentially of a cap or sleeve 10 having a needle opening or slot 11 designed to register with a similar Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner ofPatents,
slot 12 in the needle plate 13 upon which said cap or sleeve is superposed when in use, as shown in Fig. 2. The ordinary construction of needle plate may .be used in this connection with modification only to the extent of beveling or undercutting the lateral edges thereof as shown at 14 to pro,--
vide for the secure engagement with the c needle plate of the downturned and downwardly converged flanges 15 on the cap or sleeve. I I
The cap or sleeve is of a thickness substantially equal to theaprojection of the knife or cutter 16 from the needle plate and is provided with a seat 17 to receive the knife or cutter, said seat, in the construction illustrated, consisting of a narrow slit opening into'the needle slot 11.
It will be seen that this cap or sleeve may 1' be snapped upon the needle plate at any time that it'may be required inchanging from work upon leather soles to that upon rubber soles, and the plate can be as. easily removed in reversing the operation. When in place the protecting device represented by said cap or sleeve permits of the ordinary use of the machine in every respect, but forms a work surface taking the place of the surface of the needle plate in a plane sufficiently elevated to retire the knife or a cutter and render it inoperative.
Having thus described the invention, what p is claimed is In a sewing machine, the combination with a needle plate having an upstanding knife, and a needle slot, of a rigid cap superposed on the plate and having a needle slot, the cap being provided with flanges en gaging the plate, and having a recess, re-
the cap-and the flanges cooperating with the plate, to hold the needle slots alined.
'ceiving the knife, the-knife cooperating with In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have'hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.v
