SHADE-ROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917..
Application filed June 28; 1916. Serial No. 106,416.
securing a shade in vertical adjustment within a window casing.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a shade roller in combination with means of simple construction and operation for securingthe same in any desired vertical adjustment. 1
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated which can be easily and quickly applied to a window casing of ordinary construction.
Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the invention as applied, partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detailed sectional view, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary tional view.
At each side of the window casing 1 is secured an elongated rectangular casing 2. This casing is provided with a relatively broad and deep U-slot 3 extending the full length thereof. A smaller slot 4 projects inwardly from the central line of slot 2. The inner flange 2of the casing is provided with a series of teeth 2 As will be noted from Fig. 1, the teeth at the sides of the window are directed in opposite directions, relatively, for a purpose to be later disclosed.
At the top and bottom of casing 2 there are mounted pulleys 5 and 6, respectively, carried by brackets 7 secured to the ends of the casing. A flat ribbon or tape 8 is passed about these pulleys and has its ends secured transverse secto the ends of bracket arms 9 formed incarries the shade 14 adapted to be rolled thereon. The head 10 is provided at its longitudinal center with a rectangular casing 15. The head is furtherprovided with a rearwardly projecting tubular member 16 at-each end of the casing 15 and communicating therewith. A rod 17 is slidably mounted in each of the tubular members 16 and the ends of this rod are adapted to engage the teeth 2 at each side of the window. These rods are normally held in operative position by the action of a coil spring 18 mounted within the casing 15 and bearingagainst the lower ends of the thumb levers .19 and 19Fsecured on the rods 17 near the inner ends thereof. The fixed standard or abutment 20 is provided at the center of the casing 15 and cooperates with the levers 19 in a manner to be hereinafter disclosed.
When-it is desired to adjust the shade, it is only necessary to move one of the levers 19 inward, and at the same time, move the head 9 in the desired direction. For instance, if it is desired to raise the shade to a higher position than that shown in Fig.1, the operator would grasp the standard 20 and-force the lever 19v inward, thus withdrawing the outer end of the rod 17 secured thereto from the teeth 2 at the left-hand side of the window. When this has been accomplished thehead 9 and the shade may be easily lifted, the rod at the right-hand side of the casing easily sliding over the teeth with which it engages which are up wardly inclined for this purpose. If it is desired to lower the shade, theright-handlever 19 would be pressed inwardly and the head 9 forced downwardly the end of the left-hand rod 17 readily sliding over the teeth at the left-hand side of the window. By this means the shade may be quickly and easily adjusted in either direction.
' Each of the casings 2 is provided, at its upper end, with a bracket21 adapted-to support the curtain rod 22. By this means,
the casings serve the double purpose of providing the curtain rod support and also means for adjustably supporting the shade roller.
By my device, the shade maybe secured in any vertical position so as to vary the amount of light which enters the room as desired. Also, if it is desired to have any particular spot in the room shaded, this may be readily accomplished by adjusting the shade for that purpose. Again, by moving the shade to a higher or lower position, the upper or lower sash of the Window may be opened so as to permit ventilation of the room Without the shade interfering with the inflowing air current, as will be obvious.
There may be variations made in the construction and adjustment of the details of my invention, and I intend to include all such variations in this application, as fall within the appended claim in which a preferred form only of my invention is disclosed.
WVhat I claim is: a
The combination of two spaced parallel casings each provided with a longitudinally extending series of teeth, the teeth of testes of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Boieaioner of Patents,
one casing being directed upward and the teeth of the other casing being directed downward, a head slidably mounted between said casings, independent oppositely directed rods slidably mounted in the head and extending transversely of the same so as to engage the teeth of said casings when extended, and means for normally holding said rods in extended position, said means being resilient whereby inward movement of the rods is permitted.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
