1. T. GRAHAM. MEANS FOR CONTROLLING THE OPERATION OF AIR GAS PLANTS.

MEANS FOR CONTROLLING THE OPERATION OF AIR-GAS PLANTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed September 28, 1916. Serial No. 122,668.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern."
Be it known that 1, JOHN THOMAS GRAHAM, a subject, of the King of Great Britain, residing at 13 Chapel street, Halstead, Essex, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Controlling the Operation of Air-Gas Plants, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for controlling the operation of air gas plants and to that type wherein means are fittedto the gasometereso that whena predetermined,
volume of gas has entered the gas holder or receiving vessel and caused the gasometer to rise to a certain height, the motive power for driving the pump is cut off and as the gasometer descends the same means turn on the motive power for the pump.
The object'of the invention is to provide improved means.
According to this invention a member is fitted to the gasometer and is adapted to en gage a weighted bell crank-lever which moves between two stops on a pivoted quadrant and causes said quadrant to move about its pivot and operate a brake stop into and out of engagement with the driving mechanism of the pump.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a control device made in accordance with this invention and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
a is a trip rod fitted to the top of the gasometer b and adapted to move in the guide a On said rod (4 are fitted two projections or trip pins 0, (Z. These trip pins 0, d, are adapted to engage the ends 6, e of a bellcrank-lever, the other end f being provided with a weight 9. As shown in Fig. 2 the pins 0, (Z, project in opposite directions and also the ends 6, 6 of the bellcranlrlever are not in the same plane, the object being to prevent the end 6 from being operated by coming in contact with the pin 0 or the end 6 being operated by coming in contact with the pin (Z. The lever f is adapted to move between two lateral stops h, j, formed by the thickened or outwardly projecting ends of the quadrant 7a which is itself pivoted at Z and connected to the link on. The link m is pivoted at one end to the brake rod n which is pivoted at 0 to a staticnary part of the apparatus, and the quadrant 7a is provided with an extension 16 to which the other end of link on is connected, said extension 701 being adapted to move in a rotary direction and such rotary movement being limited by the stop p engaging in the slot 9 formed in the extension 7' is a brake tooth or detent suitably provided on the brake rod n and is adapted to be moved into engagement with the teeth on the brake wheel 3 of the pump 25 and stop rotation thereof.
The action of the gearing is as follows One or more gas burners being turned on, the gasometer Z descends and with it the trip rod a until the trip pin 0 engages the end 6 on the bell crank, taking it downward until the weight 9 passes the vertical center, when it will drop and strike the stop it on the quadrant 70, thereby causing said quadrant to move over the distance allowed by the stop p. The link m and the brake rod 71 being'connected to the quadrant causes the brake tooth 1" to become disengaged from the teeth of the brake wheel 5, thus releasing the pump 25 which the motive power now causes to revolve.
The pumping continues until the gasometer Z) reaches a determined height, when the trip pin (Z engages the bell-crank-pin e causing the weight g to over-balance in the opposite direction, which causes the tooth 1 to engage in one of the openings between the teeth 8, thus stopping the motion of the air pump until the gasometer descends again and the operation is repeated.
hat I claim is 1. The combination, with a receiving vessel, and a pump mechanism for supplying fluid thereto; of mechanism for automatically controlling the operation of the pump, comprising a movable member under the control of the fluid in said vessel, a rocker positively shifted by said member, an oscillating device having a detent thereon engageable with said pump mechanism to lock the same against action, and a connection between said rocker and said locking device for positively oscillating said device laterally when said rocker is actuated, thereby to engage and disengage said detent.
2. The combination, with a receiving vessel, and a pump mechanism for supplying fluid thereto; of mechanism for auto matically controlling the operation of the pump, comprising a rising and falling trip rod under the control of the fluid in said vessel, a rocker positively operated by said trip rod, an oscillating brake rod having a detent thereon for engagement with said pump mechanism to lock the same against action, and aiconnection between said rocker and said brake rod for positively oscillating said brake rod laterally when said rocker is actuated, thereby to engage and disengage said detent. V
3. The combination, with a receiving vessel, and a pump mechanism for supplying fluid thereto; of mechanism for automatically controlling the operation of the pump comprising a movable'member under the control of the fluid in said vessel, a toothed brake wheel associated with the pump, an oscillating device having a tooth for engagemem with the teeth of said brake w ieel to lock said pump against action, a rocker positively operated by said movable member, and a connection between said rocker and said oscillating device for di rectly and positively shifting said device laterally when said rocker is actuated, thereby to move said locking tooth into and out of engagement with said brake wheel. v
4-. The combination, with a receiving vessel, and a pump mechanism for supplying fluid thereto; or" mechanism for automatically controlling the operation of the pump comprising a movable member under the control oit the fluid in said vessel, a toothed brake wheel associated with the pump, an oscillating brake rod pivoted at its lower end and having atooth intermediate its ends for engagement with the teeth of said brake wheel to lock said pump against action, a weighted rocker positively operated by said movable member and having an extension, and a link connecting said extension and the upper end ofthe brake rod for directly and positively shitting said brake rod when said rocker is actuated, thereby to move said locking tooth into and out of engagement with said brake wheel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 3
