COMBINED ROAD SCRAPER AND DRAG.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD J5. MrrrEN- noun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Addieville, in the county of Washington and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Road Scrapers and Drags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in road machines, and more particularly to a combined road scraper and drag.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed andefiicient machine of this character having peculiarly con structed scraping blades which will operate to loosen and scrape the earth during its passage over the road or other surface.
Another object of the invention is to so construct 'a machine of this character that the wheels may be set at any desired angle, and two of said wheels at one side of the machine set simultaneously.
Another object of the invention is to so constructth'e supportin or ground wheels that all ossibihty of s 'dding ofthe machine will be prevented.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter. described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

This machine is supported on four wheels as 9 mounted on angular axles 10, said axles being preferably L-shapcd and carried by brackets 11 which. project laterally from the beams 1 and 2. These axles are also mounted to turn in apertured lugs or bearings 12 which project upwardly from the end cross bars3 and These axles 10 are provided at their free ends with bevel gears 13 which are designed to mesh with coiipeo ating bevel gears 14 carried on the ends of rods 15 which extend longit F nally of the machine and are supported in suitable bear ings 16 carried by the end cross bars 3 and 4 and bearings 17' carried by the intermediate cross bars 5 and 6. These rods are provided at their inner ends with upstanding levers 18 which are preferably made integral with the rods and by means of which the rods are rotated for setting the wheels 9.
The'bearings 17 have segmental racks 19 with which are designed to be engaged spring actuated. dogs 20 carried by the levers 18 for locking said lovers in adjusted position. These dogs 20 may be released by bell cranks 21 supported on the upper free ends of the levers and connected with the dogs by rods or wires 22' The two levers at the rear of the machine are connected with those at the front by means of rods 23, as is shown clearlyiin Fig. 2 so that the set ting of one lever either at the front or rear will operate to set the corresponding lever and the wheels connected therewith.
A platform 25 is preferably supported by cross bars 5 and 6 for the operator to stand on, and if desired, it'may be equip ed with a seat.

In the operation of this machine, the parts being in the position shown in il ig. From. the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention. appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as Within the scope of the claimed invention I. In a machine of the class described, a pair of beams, cross bars connecting said beams, wheels having L-shaped axles journalcd on said beams and crossbars, bevel gears carried by said axles, longitudinally alined rods having bcrcl gears mounted to mesh with the gears on said axles, levers fixed. to said rods whereby said gears are actuated to change the position of said wheels, and means for locking said levers in adjusted position.

In a machine of the class described, a pair of obliquely disposed parallel beams, cross bars connecting said beams, wheels having L-shaped axles jonrnaled on said beams and cross bars, bevel gears'carried by said axles, longitudinally alined rods carried by said cross bars and having bevel gears mounted to mesh with the gears on said axles, levers fixed to said rods whereby said gears are actuated to change the position of said wheels, and means for locking said levers in adjusted position.

In a. machine of the class described, a supporting structure including longitudinally spaced beams, cross bars ctmnecting said beams, scraping blades depending from one of said beams, brackets projecting late-rally and rearwardly from said beams, brackets projecting upwardly from said cross bars in alinement with said beam car ried brackets, L-shaped axles journaled in the brackets of said cross bars and beams,
