MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 16, 1917. Serial No. 155,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAnTANo DALLAVALLE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide a mattress which shall embody all of the advantages of a tufted mattress and yet be of a fixed size which shall not materially expand or increase under use; to thus enable the mattresses to be manufactured of the size desired, so that they will fit the bedstead when applied thereto; to prevent the mattresses from becoming too large and projecting or hanging over the sides of the bedstead, because of expansion or flattening under use; to secure a tufted mattress which will retain its tufted form and not be quickly flattened by use; to secure all the benefits of a tufted mattress without a large number of exposed pockets or recesses in which dirt can lodge and be held; to more particularly eliminate such pockets or re,- cesses where they are inaccessible or reached with the greatest difliculty; to thus secure a clean and sanitary mattress; to provide such a mattress which when in use shall at its edges present the appearance of mattresses heretofore known; to enable said edges to retain their shape and appearance, and to secure other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
7 Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is' a perspective view of a por-. tion of a mattress of my improved construction, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same upon line 2-2, Fig. 1. g
In the particular embodiment of the invention shown in said drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of the mattress, comprises a container 2 of suitable textile material, filled with any suitable material 3 such as hair, felt or the like, and tufted in any manner common to mattress making. will be understood that this body portion is made up in a manner similar to tufte mattresses now on the market except that its edges, both as to their corners and surfaces,
' out of shape,
are left plain while all its middle portion at a distance from said edges is tufted by cotton tufts 4: and threads 5 as is common. Furthermore, the container 2 of the body portion 1 need not be of strong expensive or ornamental material such as would be needed for the outside covering or tick of a mattress, but-can be of any plain and inexpensive material which will serve to confine the filling in tufted form.
In carrying out the body portion 1, formed as above described, in an outer covering or tick 6 which is of suitable ornamental textile material sufiiciently strong to resist expansion or flattening of the mattress and hold the same to definite dimensions. 6 completely incloses the body portion 1 of my improved mattress, fitting the same closely as to its three dimensions, but lying smooth upon its opposite upper and lower sides so as to cover all the pockets or recesses formed in the body portion by the tufting. Said pockets or recesses are thus protected from dust and dirt and the mattress rendered more clean and sanitary, while at the same time all the beneficial effects of tufting are preserved to the sleeper or user.
The edges of my improved mattress are stitched by any form of stitching which is well-known and commonly used in the art for the edges of mattresses, such as roll edge, plain edge or imperia For illustration, I have shown roll edge stitching employed, in which the edges of the mattress for its entire periphery, and adjacent to both sides, are stitched through the outer covering or tick 6 and the body portion 1 including both its covering 2 and filling 3, such stitching being marked with reference numeral 7 in Fig. 2 and the depressions caused by it being marked 8 on the sides 'of the mattress and 9 on its edge in Figs. 1
and 2. Such stitching secures-all the component parts 'of\my mattress firmly together at the periphery of the mattress, 'so that there can be no shifting which would cause the edges of the mattress to round or get and furthermore, it causes the mattress to have at its exposed edges the appearance of an ordinary tufted mattress. The middle portions of the upper and lower sides of the mattress are, however, plain and smooth, as shown and described.
A mattress of my improved construction Patented @ct. re, tart.
my invention 1 inclose This covering or tick will not change its original size or dimensions in use, because the outer covering or tick 6 is made of the exact dimensions desired for'the mattress and is sufficiently firm to prevent spreading of the mattress under pressure upon its tufts. Furthermore, the mattress will keep its shape at the edges and said outer covering or tick cannot shift or displace with respect to the body portion because it is integrally joined therewith as a part of the mattress around its entire periphery. At the same time, for the middle portion of the mattress, the tufted body portion is independent of the outer tick or covering except for being inclosed thereby, and thus the sleeper or user gets the full benefit of a tufted mattress. My improved mattresses can therefore be made and sold in sizes to exactly fit the beds for which they are intended and will not expand or change those sizes under use or Wear.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: p
In a mattress, the combination of a body portion comprising a container and a filling, the, whole being tufted for its middle part and capable of edgewise expansion as it fiat- .tens, and an outer covering strong enough to prevent such expansion ln'closing sald body portion and positively secured thereto at the marginal part of the mattress.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
