Be it known that I, RALPH A.WrLL1soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flashings for Sidewalk-Lights; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention aims to provide simple and eiicient means for preventing leakage around vault lights and the' like placed in sidewalks, and to this end, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and -in which Figure 1 is a lan view of a portion of a sidewalk and a skylight therein showing the application of the invention;

n the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a rough foundation of a sidewalk and 2 the finishing layer of cement or concrete which constitutes the walk proper, this walk having a rectangular opening 3 to receive therein a light-carrying slab.
An outer rectangular frame 4 disposed in the opening 3, the side and .end bars of said frame being L-shaped in cross section with their horizontal base anges 5 embedded in the wall of the opening 3 and with their vertical webs or anges 6 spaced inwardly from said wall and terminating below the surface of the walk. The outer edges of the flanges 5 are provided with lon- 'tudinally extending vertically disposed flanges 7 preferably formed by bending said edges first upwardly and then downwardly. l

An inner frame 8 is disposed within the frame 4 and the side.. and end bars of said frame 8 are likewise L-shaped in cross section, the horizontal base flanges 9 of these bars having vertical flanges 10 on their free 2 and 3.. The horizontal flanges 9 are embedded in the edges of a slab 12'which is constructed of cement, concrete or the like, saidv edges being spaced from the vertical ianges as shown. The slab 12 is supported by a frame 13 ofthe usual or any preferred construction and carries the lights 14.
Although this feature is not absolutely essential, the base ianges of both frames 4 and 8 arel preferably perforated in ylongitudinalI rows in order that they may be more effectively anchored within the cement or other material of which the walk and slab are constructed.
A filler 15 of any suitable water-tight plastic material is employed to ill the space between the wall of the opening 3 and the edge ofthe slab 12, said iiller covering the vertical anges of both frames as shown and terminating Hush with the surface of the walk and slab.

the outer frame 4 being held in proper position while this is being done, by any preferred means. To prevent the material of which layer 2 is yconstructed from coming into contact with the vertical web 6 of the frame 4, a thin strip of wood is placed against the outer surface of said web and is removed when the material in question is set. The frame 13 is next placed within the opening 3 and held in proper position by an appropriate scaifoldor the like and the lights 14 are placed on said frame. The frame 8 is now hooked on the frame 4 after which the plastic material of which the slab 12 is constructed, is applied around the upstanding lights and above and below the horizontal flanges 9. During this operation, a thin wooden strip will be placed between the vertical fianges 11 and the material of which the slab is constructed. When this material is set, the strip in question will be removed thus leaving sufficient space` for the filler 15, which filler is now applied.
All joints of the two framesv will be Well soldered or otherwise secured before the plastic material is applied around said frames and when this material has harment of an inner and outer frame constructl ed of one piece of ,metal stamped into in-fv In verted T-shape in transverse section. this form of the invention, the two plies of the vertical web 20 are spaced apart near their lower edges to permit expansion. and contraction of the joint when completed and the horizontal base flanges 21 extend outwardly in opposite directions from the lower edges of said plies, the outer edges of said flanges being bent first upwardly and then downwardly to provide longitudinal flanges 22 similar ,in 4all respects to the flanges 7 and 10. In this type of invention as well as that previously described, the base flanges are preferably perforated.
The joint just described may well be used wherever'a water-tight construction is required, yet one which will permit expansion and contraction. vFor instance, it may be employed to advantage in the construction of reservoirs.
In the foregoing, I have described a number of specific details of construction vfor the attainment of probablyT the best results and in the drawings, these details have been illustrated, but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the principal objects.
I claim as my invention 1'. The combination with a sidewalk having an opening to receive a light-carrying slab; of a frame whose sides and ends are of inverted T-shape in cross section, said frame being disposed in the opening with approximately the outer half of its horizontal base embedded in the walk and with its vertical web spaced inwardly from the wall of said opening and terminating below the surface of the walk, a light-carrying slab within the aforesaid frame and having its inner edge spaced from said vertical web, the inner half of said base being embedded in'said edge of the slab, and a water-tight filler covering the aforesaid web and filling the space between the slab and walk.
2. The combination with a sidewalk hav- "walk, a second frame within the other and also having L-shaped side and end bars whose horizontal flanges extend inwardly and Whose vertical flanges are directed outwardly anddownwardly over the vertical flanges of the first-named frame, a lightcarrying slab in said opening and having its edge spaced from said vertical flanges of the second frame, the horizontal flanges of the latter being embedded in the edge of said slab, and a water-tight-filler in the space between the slab and walk and covering the aforesaid vertical iianges.
3. A frame of the class described consisting of an outer frame whose side and end bars are L-shaped in cross section with their horizontal fianges extending outwardly,` and an inner frame within said outer frame, the side and end bars of said inner frame being also L-shaped in cross section with their horizontal flanges` extending inwardly and with their vertical fianges directed outwardly and downwardly around the vertical lianges of said outer frame.
4. A frame of the class described consisting of an outer frame whose side and end 7 bars are L-shaped in cross section with their horizontal flanges extending outwardly, and an inner frame within said outer frame, the side and end bars of said inner frame being falso L-shaped in cross section with their horizontal flanges extending inwardly and with their vertical' lianges directed outwardly and downwardly around the vertical flanges of said outer frame, the free edges of the -horizontal flanges of both frames being bent upwardly and then downwardly to form longitudinally extending vertically disposed anchorin flanges.
5. A reinforcing device or the meeting edges of a pair of molded slabs, said device being in the form of an elongated bar-like structure formed of malleable sheet metal bent into the form of a Tin transverse section, the outer edges of the oppositely extending flanges of the T being bent first in one direction and then in the other to provide longitudinal anchoring flanges.
