ROTARY PUMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. POND, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary pumps for raising liquids or forcing the same through pipes or mains, and the chief purpose or object of the invention is to provide a pump capable of producing higher pressures, in proportion to its size and speed of operation, than can be obtained from the best types of rotary pumps now in use. Another object of the invention is to provide a rotary pump possessing increased efliciency and economy .of operation as compared with known liquid forcing devices of the same general character.
One known type of rotary pump operates on the principle of the displacement of the liquid by centrifugal action through the agency of a rapidly revolving paddle wheel within a casing having a central intake and a peripheral discharge. Another known type operates on the principle of a screw, wherein the liquid is bodily moved in a given direction through the agency of a rapidly revolving spiral or screw propeller confined and rotating within a cylindrical or conical casing having open ends for the intake and discharge of the liquid.
The pump forming the subject matter of my present invention, as will readily be seen from the following description and the accompanying drawing, combines these two principles harmoniously in a single structure, and yields results superior to any that are attainable with the best forms of either of these known types.
In order that my invention and its principle of operation may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, I have, in the accompanying drawing, illustrated one practical form in which the invention may be embodied; and referring thereto Figure 1 is a side elevation, in section through the shaft and casing, of my improved pump.

ignate the mating halves of a casing of snail-shell form that are peripherally united by bolts or screws 7 the casing being formed with a suitable pedestal or base-block 8. The casing is formed with an axial suctionor intake opening 9 in the member 5 with which communicates a supply pipe 10, and preferably with a pair of oppositely disposed and directed tangential discharge openings or passages 11.
Extending through a suitably packed joint 12 in the casing member 6 is a shaft 13 journaled in suitable bearings 14 and carrying fast and loose pulleys 15 and 16. Fast on this shaft 13 within the casing is the rotor of skeleton form, and, as herein shown,
includes a series of radial vanes, each of which, as herein shown, comprises a spindle 21 journaled at its inner end in a suitable bearing in the hub 13' and at its outer end in a suitable bearing in one of the cross-bars 19, and one or more spiral blades 22 rigid with and encircling said spindle.
Rotation of the vanes on their individual axes simultaneously with the rotation of the rotor as a whole about the axis of shaft 13 is effected through the agency of pinions 23 fast on the outer end portions of the spindles 21 meshing with a stationary ring gear 2% integral with or secured to the inner side of one of the side walls of the casing. The pitch of the spiral blades is, of course, such as to effect an outward propelling or propulsive action in a radial direction under the described rotation of the blades on their individual axes.
The mode and principle of operation will be readily apparent from the description and illustration. As the rotor is driven through power applied to the shaft 13, the individual vanes are not only carried bodily around the aXis of the shaft, but they are of the spiral blades just clear the inner sur- 7 faces of the side walls of the casing, said vanes operate to force the liquid outwardly both by centrifugal action and by a screw action, both actions taking place simultaneously upon the whirling body of liquid within the casing. This combined action effects a rapid and powerful displacement of the liquid radially of the rotor, creating a strong continuous uniform flow through the discharge passage or passages 11, and a corresponding vacuum or suction effect at the intake opening 9.
My invention is useful not only as an eiiicient lifting or forcing device for liquids such as water and oil, but it also constitutes a very effective mixing device for paints and the like in the manufacture of which two or more liquids require to be thoroughly mixed or comingled.
So far as I am aware, I am the first to combine in a rotary pump the centrifugal and screw principles of liquid propulsion operating simultaneously and cooperatively in a single structure. Such being the case, I do not limit myself herein to the particular form and structure of apparatus illustrated and described, but reserve all such variations and modifications as may fairly fall within the spirit and purview of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

and a peripheral discharge, of a rotor journaled to rotate in said casing and provided with radial vanes, each of spiral or screw form and capable of rotation on its own axis, and means for imparting individual rotation to said vanes simultaneously with the rotation ofsaid rotor about its own axis.
2. In a rotary pump, the combination with a pump casing having an axial intake and a peripheral discharge, of a'rotor journaled to rotate in said casing and provided with radial vanes, each of spiral or screw form and capable of rotation on its own axis, a stationary ring gear at one side of said rotor, and gears fast on said vanes en gaging said ring gear to impart individual rotation to said vanes simultaneously with the rotation of said rotor about its own axis.
3. In a rotary pump, the combination with a pump casing of snail-shell form having an axial intake and a tangential peripheral discharge, of a rotor journaled to rotate in said casing, radial spindles journaled at their ends in the hub and rim of said rotor, spiral blades rigid with and encircling said spindles, a stationary ring gear on the inner side'of one side wall of said casing, and gears fast on said spindles engaging said ring gear to impart individual rotation to said spindles and their, spiral blades simultaneously with the rotation of said rotor about its own axis.
