To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CLARENCE 8. AN- nnnws, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Hog-Oiler, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in hog oilers, in which a divided roller is employed in connection with an oil containing pan and the objects of my improvement are,

First, To provide an elongated roller without end supports or trunnions which interfere with the contact of the animal with the roller and which roller extends beyond the oil container so that it is easily reached at all parts by the body of the hog rubbing against it.

Second, To provide such an elongated shaped roller divided into two parts so that the use of it by two or more hogs rubbing at the same time will not prevent its operation.

Third, To provide such a hog oiler that dirt upon the divided roller will not readily fall into the oil pan.

Fourth, To provide such an oiler with a containing pan that will allow the water to pass through the oil and out without washing out or causing the oil to overflow.

Fifth, To provide such a divided elongated roller easily and without friction.

I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing,

In which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the whole device showing the hollow divided roller and cut away to show theposition of the roller bearing upon which the roller turns. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the roller and containing pan through the axis of the hollow divided rollers. Fig. 3 is a cross section perpendicular to the axis of the divided roller and in the plane of the roller bearings. Fig. 4 is a cross section of the containing pan. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the containing pan.

The hub of each part of the divided roller (4 a is arranged so that the outer edges ofthe parts a and a will not touch, bringing the bearing clos'e to the axis at the hub, overcoming the friction and enabling the roller to be turned easily. It is obvious that the ellipsoid a and a may also be in the form or shape of a spheroid, the exact shape of the body being immaterial but preferably an elongated spheroid form is used to give more surface against which a hog may make contact. The containing pan 0 is made smaller than the outside diameter of the divided roller so that all sides of the roller may be easily reached. The feet of the containing pan '0 are placed upon a suit able foundation as g which may consist of blocks of wood or concrete properly set in the ground and the axis. of the divided roller is placed at a correct height to be reached by both small and large hogs. The legs of the containing pan 0 are provided with detachable feet 71, and j and y" suitably fas tened to the foundation 9. Roller bearings are provided, consisting of two rollers in each bearing on each portion a and a of the divided roller. On the outside of the roller a and a are placed suitable ribs at proper intervals 2, r and p, r.

The proper oil or antiseptic liquid is placed in the containing pan 0. If water runs into this pan from rain or other sources it will readily be seen that the water will pass down through the oil to the opening at at the bottom of the container 0 and out through the duct 61 and out at the opening 0. The oil will be maintained to the height corv easily upon them and suitable responding to the height of the opening 2. By pouring water into this pan with the oil the dirt will be washed through the oil out through the opening 0. The part a of the roller is separated from the part a so that of the roller and supply additional amounts to the animal rubbing against the roller a or a. They also divert the flow of the oil over the outer end of the divided roller a, a where ananimal most frequently rubs. The ribs also aid in turning the roller a or a when rubbed by an animal, and tend to drop off dirt beyond the edge of the containing an 0. p It is generally desirable to fasten an apparatus of this kind to some suitable solid foundation as g and for this reason suitable feet 2', i, j and j are provided, being made detachable by removing any two of the bolts or pins 6, e or e 6 The oiler may be tipped over and the oil emptied out without removing the divided roller a, a, and any dirt or foreign matter flushed out of the container 0; The divided roller a, a may be composed of exactly symmetrical parts and may be made hollow for the purpose of saving material and lightening the same.
