Description

M. H.v WILEY'. Broiler and Toasfer.
No. 124.306. Patented March 5. 1872.
t ivrrnn S'rnfrns PATENT @Ferca MOSES Il. WILEY, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, J. ARTHUR MCDUFFEE, OF MEDFORD, AND EDWARD D. REEVE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROILERS AND TOASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,306, dated March 5, 1872.
To allpersons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, Mosns H. WILEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Broiler and Toaster; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l denotes a side elevation, Fig. 2 a top view, Fig. 3 a bottom view, and Fig. 4 an end view of a broilin g and toasting apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, cheap, and eff'ective apparatus, adapt` ed to any ordinary cooking-stove or range, whereby the broiling of meats, Ste., and the toasting of bread can be accomplished with great uniformity, facility, and dispatch. My invention consists of a grated frame having a grated cover hinged thereto, and provided with means of fastening the two together, the said device or frame and cover being so combined with a supporting rod or frame as to be capable of being readily revolved or reversed and locked in either of its horizontal positions, and thereby enable an article, while being cooked in the apparatus, to have its opposite sides alternately exposed to the action of the fire with great facility.
In the said drawing, A denotes a metallic frame, which may be of a rectangular orother shape, having a series of bars or wires, a c, &c, disposed transversely across the same. B is the cover, which is of a rectangular shape, its frame bei'lg formed of wire, and having a series of rods or wires, b, extending longitudinally thereof, and screwed to the two ends of the frame c c are two strengthening bars or wires, which are affixed to 011e side ofthe cover-frame and near the ends thereof, and extend across vand are secured to or bent around the opposite side of the said fraaie, and then so bent and passed through holes in the frame A as to form hinged connections therewith. d is a catch or device for fastening the cover to the frame A, the same being formed and applied as shown in the drawing. C is a metallic rod or frame for supporting the frame A. The said frame G consists of a cylindrical rod or wire bent inte the form as shown in Figs. l and 2. T he lower arm e of the said frame C extends longitudinally and centrally through the frame A, and
serves as an axis or journal, in which the said latter frame may be revolved or turned. The upper part of the frame C, at its rear end, is formed with an extension, o, to fit and rest upon the top plate of the stove at one end of the boiler-opening. The two ends ofthe wire, after being bent into the rectangular shape to form the frame, as shown, are brought together and extended rearward, and provided with a handle, f,- this latter extension being intended to rest upon the top ot' the stove on the opposite side of the said boiler-opening, and thus, in conjunction with the extension o before mentioned, maintain the apparatus in parallelism with the fire when placed over the same. The top bar It of the frame C is bent around so as to form an eye, t. 7c is a lever, which is pivoted at its lower end to the frame A, as seen in Figs. 2 and 4, and extends up through the eye t', and has a catch, I, formed thereon to operate with the said eye in locking and maintaining the frame A in either of its horizontal positions. The upper part of the said lever terminates in a handle or loop, m, by which the lever may be so operated as to readily lock and unlock the frame A and rotate the same in either direction, as circumstances may require.
In operating with my improved apparatus, the article to be broiled or toasted is to be placed upon the grid within the frame A, and the cover turned down and locked thereto; the frame A is next brought into a horizontal position by means of the lever k, and by it locked in such position; the apparatus is next to be placed wit-hin the boiler openin g or space over the fire, and so that the ]')rojecting ends ofthe supporting-frame may rest upon thettop plate of the stove. When desirable to turn the frame A so as to expose the other side of the article being cooked to the fire, We have simply to unlock the lever 7c, raise it ay short distance upward, and next push it downward again and relook it.
` Having described my invention, WhatI ola-iin 1s The improved reversible broiler and toaster composed ofthe following elem ents: First, the grated frame A and cover B, hinged together and provided with' a fastening device, as described second, the supportin g-frame C third, means of reversing the parts A and B; and, fourth, means of looking the broiler or parts A' and B in either of their horizontal positions, as specified, the Whole being combined in inan ner and so as to operate as set forth.
lM. H. WILEY. Witnesses:
