ALFRED GOPQNY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
i F DBAFT-BIGGINGL YOKE.
eas es? Be it knowirthat I, Atr um COPODlY, a
citizen the frustiii-H'lingarian Empire, residing at Chicagq in'thecounty of Cook and state of Illinois, have invented a certainnew anduseful Improvement in Draftfull, clear, concise, and-e act description, reference be ng had to thefaccompanying drawings, forming a part 'of this specifica- "'tion. This *iventloirrelates to nnprovements in An object of theinvention is to provide a yoke for draft riggings of railway cars WlllCll may be readlly attached to and de-' l tached from a standard draw bar and which,
of a yoke embodying my improvements and 3 showing the same attached to a draw bar 30 devices,
when in operative position, is prevented by integral means thereonfrom separating laterally from the draw bar.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements inthe parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the partsland as herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawlng forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 1s a top plan view and indicating in dotted lines the position of the usual stop castings. Fig. 2 s a side elevation of thefstructure illustrated in Fig.
1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken.
on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. {1 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In said drawing, 10 denotes a draw bar of M. C. B. specifications, the same having 1 upper and lowerlshoulders 11-l1 and cou- 4 pler key slot 12. My improved yoke is designated generally by the reference A and,
l as shown, comprises" two like members,
i which are in the form of links or arms 13-43, each link or arm 13 being provlded at its rear end with a shoulder 14 adapted to engage the rear side of a rear follower,
said shoulders 1 being braced by a horizontal web or flange 15. At its front end, each arm 13 is provided with a pair of spaced flanges engagingthe upper and lower surend with a shoulder 17 adapted to cooperate bar. Each pair of flanges 16-16 is connected by a vertical web, whichhas a curved mS pecificati on of Letters Patent.
inwardly extending portion 18 andan out wardly curved portion 19 (seeFig 1-). In-
Patented Oct. 16, 1917. ap iicatibn fi led November 30,1914. Serial No; 874,678.
termediate each pair of flanges 16 16 and preferably integral with the web 18-19, is an inwardly extended projection or lug 20, which is adapted to enter the elongated key slot :12, said lug or projection 20, at its forward end is provided with an overhang or finger 21,which when theyoke arms are in the position clearly indicated in Fig. 4c, over lapsthe wall 22 surrounding the'key slot 12, there being sufficient clearance between the wall22 and the adjacent edge 23 of the. lug
to permit the latter to be moved forwardly in the slot when theparts are being draw barby inserting the lugs 202O with in the key slots 12 and while the yoke arms draw bar. The yoke arms are then swung 13 13 are at an angleto the line of the' inwardly toward each other to bring the shoulders 17'17 thereon in engagement with the shoulders 1l11 and when the yoke arms have been brought into parallel engagement with the draw bar, the overhang or finger 21 will engage the walls 22 surrounding the key slots and thus prevent the yoke arms from separating laterally from the draw bar. As will be understood, the lugs 20-20 are not required to undergo any severe strain, inasmuch as under draft, the forces are transmitted from the draw bar to the arms 1313 through the shoulders 17 and flanges 16 and under bufl' the forces are transmitted directly through the draw.
bar to the front follower (not shown.) In the structure which I have shown, no connection is provided between thevrear ends of the yoke arms 13- 13 and the same will be held in proper position by means of the gear proper and the stop castings in which the yoke arms work. The arrangement is very simple and provides an easy means of attachment to the draw bar and without the necessity of keys or the usual rivets.
1. A yoke for railway draft riggings which comprises two members, each having an inwardly extended lug at the front end thereof adapted to engage in a coupler key slot of a draw bar, each of said lugs having a longitudinally extended inner end adapted to engage a wall of said key slot to prevent lateral separation of the yoke members from the draw bar.
2. Ina yoke for railway draft riggings,
two horizontally arranged arins, each of which is provided at its front end; with an inwardly extending lug arranged to enter the coupler key slot of a draw bar, eachof said lugs having integral means adapted to ov'eilap the'edge of the wall forniing saidkey slot and thus preventing lateral sepa-' ration of the yoke arms from the draw bar.
A yoke of tliecharacter described, comprising twoarnis each of? which-is provided at its'fo'rward end with upper and lower shoulders arranged to engage the usual shoulders on "a draw bar, each of said nernhers being further provided with an inwardly r extending lug arranged to enter the coupler 'key slot of a draw bar, the lug having an overhang to engage the edge of the wall surrounding the key slot. p
4; Ayoke for railway draft riggings comprising two members, each of which is provided atits forward end with .an inwardly extending. hook-likelugarranged to enter coupler'key slot and when in operative position preventing lateral separation from the i draw (bar.
A yoke for railway draft riggings co n-.
prising t'wo inei ibers, each of which is provided at 'its' forward end with an inwardly extend ng hook-like lug arranged to enter Cofiie's ofith is patent may be obtained for a coupler key slot and when inoperative position preventing lateral separation from to engage shoulders of a draw bar, and an nwardly extended hook-like lug arrangedv to enter a coupler ,key slot.
8. A yoke for railway draft;riggings' cornpi'ising twoinembers, each of which is provided at its forward end with an inwardly extending hooklike lug arranged to enter a recess in the drawbar'and when in operative position prevent ng lateral separa tion from the draw bar.
