IMPRCVEIVIENT IN WIRE FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentlNo. 124,286, dated March 5, 1872.
To all whom lt may concern:
Beit known that I, J. WILLIAM C. PETERS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Woven-Wire Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, a-nd exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingforming a part of this specification, in which the ligure there shown represents a top or plan view of a woven-wire fabric embodyin g my improvement, similar letters of reference indicating like parts.
My invention relates to woven -wire fabric such as is usually employed in the manufacture of mattresses; and it consists in combining or inter-weaving therewith one or more mctallic bands, preferably coiled in the form of aspiral, for the purpose of strengthening the fabric, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
General Description.
B B are metallic bands, made of steel or similar metal, and their surfaces may be flat or slightly oval. These bands are preferably coiledl in the form of a spiral in such a manner as to leave a sufficient space between each coil for the interweavin g of the wire fabric, i11- to which the bands may be introduced. These bands may be of any desired width and thickness, and their spirals may be of any suitable diameter. The bands may also be formed of double spirals, as shown at B C, or more than two spirals may be so used, if desired. A A are portions of woven-wire fabric like that usu ally employed in the construction of mattresses and for similar purposes, and the bands may be placed at any suitable distances apart, so as to strengthen such parts of the fabric as are subject to the greatest strain.
I am aware that several wires coiled together have been used for similar purposes; but I do not claim such. My improved bands secure greater strength and elasticity, and are much more readily made and applied.
