WILLIAM PETZ, 0F FIRTH, NEBRASKA.
ENGINE.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Pnrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Firth, inthe county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines, the object in view being to provide a simple, effective and smooth running engine of the class described in which the parts and friction are reduced to a minimum, a single ignition device answering for a pair of cylinders, and the pistons being efliciently water cooled throughout pract1- cally their entire area.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings The accompanying drawing is a side elevation partly broken away of an engine embodying the present invention.
Referring to the drawings A and B designate two cylinders which are arranged in opposed relation or end to end as shown, the adjoiningends of said cylinders being connected to a common head 1 in which is incorporated a hot tube or bulb 2 left open at the bottom to enable a heating torch to be applied thereto to bring said bulb or tube to the necessary degree of heat to insure the ignition of the gas in the combustion chambers of the cylinders A and B.
Each cylinder is provided with an intake port 3 and an exhaust port 4, the air being admitted through the air intake pipe 5 to one of the cylinders and said pipe being provided with a branch 6 leading to the other cylinder. Check valves 5 and 6 control the discharge ends of the pipes 5 and 6. An exhaust pipe 7 is associated with the exhaust port of one cylinder and a branch 8 of the pipe 7 is connected to the corresponding exhaust port of the other cylinder, the ports 8 and 4 in each cylinder being arranged on the two cycle principle.
In each of the cylindersA and B is arranged a reciprocatory piston 9 which is formed with hollow or water jacketed side walls 10 and a hollow or water jacketed head 11, each piston being further provided with the usual gas deflecting or baffle lip 12.
The two pistons 9 are connected for si- Specification of Letters Patent.

multaneous reciprocatory movement in the' same direction by means of two piston rods 13 arranged at opposite sides of the cylintened in any suitable manner to the cylinders.
It is advisable to provide each of the pistons with a drain cook 32 at one end thereof communicating with the water jacket of the piston so as to enable the pistons to be drained in cold weather to prevent freezing.
In connection with each of the pistons, I employ oppositely located reciprocatory pipes 18. Each of the pipes 18 communicates through an angular extension 18 with the adjacent cylinder, one of said pipes being employed to conduct the water to the piston and the other to carry the water ofi therefrom after it has circulated through the water jacket of the piston. In connection with each of the pipes 18 I employ a water cylinder 19, these cylinders being shown as flanged at 20 and fastened by any convenient means to the opposite sides of the cylinders A and B, i I
21 designates a water intake pipe leading to one of the water cylinders 19, and provided with a branch 22 leading to the other water cylinder 19. At the opposite side of the engine is a water outlet pipe leading from one of the water cylinders on that side and provided with a branch leading from the other water cylinder at the same side, the last named pipe and branch not being shown. The pipes 18 slide telescopically in the water cylinders 19 and travel with and are actuated by their respective pistons. In the preferred embodiment of this feature of the invention, the water intake pipe is made of slightly less diameter than the pipes 18 at that side of the engine and at the opposite side, the water outlet pipes 23 and 24: are
made of larger diameter than the pipes 18 at that side, the construction referred to insuring an easy and efiectivecirculation of water through the entire water cooling system.
One of the cylinders is in communication with a compression crank case 25 in which the crank shaft 26 has its bearings, 27 designating a connecting rod by means of which the. intense '5? tea the pisass' re' parted to the crank shaft. The other cylinchamber 28 shown in the form of a pipe sup;
ported at its outerend conveniently by the adjacent end of the branch intake pipe 6, and provided With a safety or pop valve 2-9 in case thecompression should become eX- cessive. There 'is, or" course, nocommunicati'on between the pipe 6 and the'auxiliary compression chamber 28. V f
The gaseous mixture is introduced into the combustion chambers of the cylinders A and B through a pair vof injector nozzles 30 as shown, the gasbeing forced therein under pressure; .The hot bulb ortube 2 is pro vided with projecting deflecting fins 31 in each of the combustion chambers, said fins being arranged at an angle so as to de fiect and thoroughly agitate the mixtureas it fills the combustion chamber preparatory tothe compression stroke of the piston.
These finsalso assist in the ignition of the charges. After the bulb or tube 2 has been heated, the heat'thereof Will be maintained by the subsequent explosions in the combustion chambers, itbeing understood that copiesof this patent inay be obtained for in each combustion chamber the temperatureof the gas is raised to a high point by the compressing action of the piston.
7 By means of the construction above described, iU'Will be observed that many of the parts ordinarily used in a two cylinder engine are dispensed With, such as one connecting rod, two bearings, one crank, one connecting rod bearing and a proportionate reduction in friction, One hot bulb of tube answers for two cylinders. .T-h'e construction also pr'o'yid'e's for a thorough spraying or agitation of the fitter cylinder:
What I claim is V, r In an internal combustion engine, a pair of opposed cylinders ar anged end to end, a) single head commonto' the adjoining ends oiboth cylinders ored out to form an inclosed hot ignition chamber, and gasdefleeting on oppositesides of said commo head. 7 V a 1 In'testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two" Witnesses.
