Description

nan s OSCAR KATZENBERGER, or'onroneo, ILLINOIS.
JAMB SPRING-HINGE.
To all whom it may concern: I l
Be it known that I, OSCAR KATZENBERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Jamb Spring-Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention relates to spring hinges and has for an objectthe provision of an improved construction of jamb hinge that may be used one. jamb 'of any width without the use of a hanging strip orwithout mortising the jamb.
. Another object in viewisto provide a V jamb hinge designed to be countersunl'c only in thedoor. I i p A still further object in view, is to provide a j amb hinge with a pair of drums and a connecting plate formed to resist the strain in such manner that the strain will be distributed throughout the plate.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a sectional view through Fig. 3 on line 1-1.
Fig. 2 is a face view of the door jamb with the-door and hinge moved to one side.
Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal section through Fig. 1 on line 33.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4. p p t Fig. 5 is a sectional view through Fig. 2 on line 5- -5.
Fig. 6 is a front view of the drums and connecting plate, together with a reinforcing member associatedtherewithh through Fig. 3
Referring to the accompanying drawings 5;
by numerals, 1 indicates a door jamb to which the door 2 is pivotally connected by one or more hinges. In arranging the hinge in position it will be noted that the jamb 1 is not in any way countersunk or cut as mdicated by Fig. 4 while the door is cut to an appreciable extent for accommodating certain parts of the hinge. As shown in Figs. 3 and 6 the hinge is provided with a body 3 which is formed from a plate bent so as to produce the barrels 4 and 5 and overlapping leaves 6 and 7. The leaves 7 are formed so that their edges will be at an angle, as shown in Fig. 6, said angle being diagonal from top to bottom of the body 3 whereby a plurality of fastening rivets 8 may be used for forming a rigid body and for causing the strain to be distributed throughout the body on both of the leaves Specification of Letters Patent.

instead of centrally of the body on one leaf, which would be the case if the meeting edges of theparts of leaf 7, were in the center. In the drawing a double-acting hinge has been shown for the purpose of straight in Fig. 6 merely'for the purpose of A leaf 14 is provided. and
retaining screws l5, the turned-up ends 17 and 18 fitting the top and bottom of the notched-out section 19 in door 2. The leaf 14 is provided with end'members 16 and 20 and also with a bracing wall 21 against which the pin 22 rests when the hingeis in operation. A pintle 23 extends through the ends 16 and 20 and also through the barrel 4 so as to hold the parts in proper position. A spring 24 is arranged in barrel 4'with one end connected to the. endo16in any suitable manner and the opposite end to a winding disk 25, which winding. disk is formed with a plurality of apertures 26 for accommodating the lugor pin 22, whereby the spring may be wound to any desired; eX- tent.
1 Barrel- 5 is provided with .a ,leaf27, which leaf is fitted on to the barrel 5 in a similar manner to the way leaf 14 is fitted on to barrel 4, the leaf being associated with a spring pintle and other parts similar to barrel 5 and will therefore need no additional description, leaf 27 being connected to the jamb 1 while leaf 14 is connected to the door 2. It will be noted that in forming the body 3 and the barrels 4 and 5, the barrels are arranged on one side, or, rather, on one face of the body 3, whereby the leaf 27 may properly fit fiatwise against the door frame or jamb 1. In fact, the hinge could be placed against a wall and properly secured inposition and support a door designed to swing in both directions or one direction, as all the swinging movement is done from the center of the respective barrels. In producing this result the leaf 14 is formed of the turned-up members 17 and particularly in Fig. 4. QEIld 13 is shown 18 whereby a socket is provided which re ceives the central part or body 6 and also part of the leaf 27. Itwillbe noted that the central leaf section formed of barrels 4L and 5 and the body 6 is constructed of one piece of material and the body 6 is reinforcedloyh consequently, being placed accurately. By
arranging the parts as shown in the drawing and as described above, no hanging-strip is necessary, and, consequently, no 'inortising of the jamb as all of the mortising is done in the door. This result is attained, as shown in the drawing, by forming the bar rels on the edges of the body and one face thereof, which leaves suiiicient space between the barrels and the jamb to avoid frictional engagement whether the hinge is a single or doubleacting jamb hinge. One of the objects in producing a hinge which will not need a hanging strip mortised into the jamb is that saidstrip must be accurately positioned or the door will not hang properly, while by providing a hinge which' is mortised intothe door only and secured to the jamb at any point the door may be hung accurately without any appreciable trouble.
'VVhat I claim is: i i
1. A jainb hingev comprising a pair of barrels and a body formed of one piece bent so as to produce the two barrels on the edges of the body and on one face thereof and'to produce a body having a solid section and a divided section, said divided section being arranged with a division line diagonally across the body whereby vertical strain will be distributed to all parts of the body, means for rigidly connecting said sections together, a pair of leaves, means for resiliently connecting one of said leaves with one of" said barrels, and means for resiliently connecting the other of said leaves with the other barrel.
2. In a double swinging or three-leaf hinge, a central leaf section formed from .asingle sheet of metal bent for producing a pair of barrels at each edge, a central solid body portion and a pair of body end members arranged with their meeting edges at a diagonal whereby the vertical strain will be taken up by all of the body porti'ons and means for-clamping all o'f said body portions rigidly together.
3. In a hinge of the character described,
a central leaf section formed with a pair of barrels, a body portion formed from a plurality of plate"po'rtions mergingdnto said barrels, one of the plate portions having diagonal meeting edges, reinforcing face of their connecting section and'spaced L outwardly from the jamb when in useyn one of said barrels-"being pivotally mounted onv said first mentioned leaf and the second mentioned leaf being pivotally mounted on the other barrel, said last mentioneddeaf and the connecting section between said barrels fitting within the turned-up ends of the first mentioned'leaf. I T" oscan ara-nu sances.
