Description

F.1.HOYT.
improvement in Indicator Locks.
No.124,270 Patentedmarchnan.
Jig. 1. l @H522 PATENT @Enron FREDERICK J. HOYT, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
iMPROVENlENT lh! INDICATOR-PADLCCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,270, dated March 5, 1872.
Specification describing a new and usei'ul Improvement in Register-Lock, invented by FREDERTCK J. HOTT, ot' the city otNew York, in the. county and State ot' I\'ew York.
M y invention consists ot' aI combination, with a lock, of a rolled and numbered paper strip and apparatus for causing' said strip to be forced out of the case the distance of one nuinber by the key each time it is turned, in order that the person locking the lock may tear oit' the number thrust out, to be kept for comparison with the numbers torn ott' by others to show whether the lock has been unlocked by unauthorized persons. The essential object of the improvement is to provide a-lock for freightcars. by which to ascertain with unerring certaii tj on what section ot along' line ot' road missing' goods have been stolen, in order to renderthe particular section whereon the goods were lost accountable, instead ot' charging the loss pro rate upon all the sections, as is now the practice, owing' to the want ot' any reliable means to tix with certainty upon the section encountering' the loss Figure .l is a side ele vation otl an ordinary padlock with one side otl the case removed, to which I propose to apply my improvement. Fig'. 2 is an elevation ot the opposite side of the cz se. Fig'. 3 is a horizontal section on the line a' w of Fig'. l. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 3/ y ot' 1. Fig'. 5 is avertical section on the line e .c ot Fig. 4, and Fig'. 6 is a side elevation ofthe key.
In this example I have represented an ordinary padlock, to which I have applied a secondary case, A, to contain the paper strip B and the working-rollers C C for feeding said strip out through the case at D; and I have substituted t'or the ordinary key-post a tubular post, E, passing' through the back side F of the lock-case, with a rosesclutch, Gr, on the end and abit, H, on the side inside of the lock, to enter the notch I in the end ot' the key, for turning said post when the key turns t0 actuate the roller C, with which it clutches by a corresponding clutch, K, on it, wit-l1 which it is held in contact by a sprin g', L. This roller C, together with the idle roller G constitutes a pair ot' i'eedrollers for forcing' out the paper strip, which passes between them, and is tirinly griped between the rollers by the action of the spring N, the said roller C being mounted on a support, O, capable of moving toward or from roller C. M is a spring-pawl, to prevent backward rotation ot' the roller C. The roseclutch is used to let the key-post turn back with the ,key when the latter is withdrawn from the lock, but would not be used it' the key turned wholly around, as some do. A suitable guide, J, is employed to conduct the strip troni the rollers to the orifice I); and a cutter', It, is iixed in the shell to facilitate the cutting' or tearing ot' the strip.
This plan represents one arrangement by which the apparatus may be applied to locks already made; but other arrangements may be used; and, in applyingit to new locks, such modifications in forni and arrangement will be made as may be needful, according to the nature oi" the case, and I do not limit myself to any particular' arrangement oi' the apparatus for actuating the paper strip; neither do I limit myself to actuating' said apparatus through the medium ot' the key-post, tor it may be done bythe tnmblers, or by the bolt, or any moving part, the same being provided with a pawl to actuate the rollers, or other equivalent means. y
This numbered paper strip will. not only indicate with unerring certainty between what stations-where the lock is opened and locked by duly authorized a gents-it has been opened unauthorizedly, but it will be a check upon the station-agents, whose duty it is to open and relock them, by requiring each station-agent to forward the number torn ottl by him to the general agent for comparison 5 for it' one agent neglects his duty the number torn ot't' by the next one, which the iirst should have taken, being' compared with the iirst number torn oft' at starting', will show the neglect ot' the delinquent agent.
Having thus described myiuvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a lock, ot' a nunr bored paper strip and apparatus for delivering a predetermined portion thereof through the lock-case each time the lock is unlocked, said apparatus being' set in motion by the key, all substantially as specitied.
2. A revolving' keypost, E, ot' a lock, conibined withfeed-rollers C C', and provided with guide J with a lock-case having` a dischargea bit for turning it by the key7 substantially as orice, substantially as speciiied.
specified. The above specification of my invention 3. The combination of feed-ro11ers with a' signed by me this 13th day of December, 1871.
