This` invention relatos particularly to machinol for sewing outsoles on shoes, but is. adopted for :ill classes of work which may vary oonsidersl'ily in thickness.
The objects of the invention are simplicity of construcl'imi7 si rongfh, durability, accessibility, and vupoeityior operating upon all Classes of work withoul resetting or adjustment. Further objects of the invention appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in e presser foot having on operating bar' slidebly engaging its shank, which ehnnps it down and raises it automatically during the stitch forming operation, and which is self-adjusting to accommodate different thicknesses of work. The intention further consists in the arrangement of the parts for convenient operation of the machine, and for easy inspection and ed'ustment or repair, as hereinafter describe That the invention oonsists in is' further set forth in the appended claims.

The Work table hos a slot through it parallel to its front edge for the uWl and needle to work through. The work is held by the operator with its top side up, and is nided by hond. There are two threads used in forming the stitch, the top threed 40' being ted through the eye of the needle 41 which operates from above the Work, and the bottom thread being supplied from a bobbin which is carried by' the shuttleI 52 which operates below the Work table. A Wax pot 66 is provided for Waxing the thread. The wax pot is located on top of the frame of the machine at the back, and is steam jacketed for keeping it hot. The thread is led to the wax pot from any suitable source of supply, such as a spool, not shown in the drawings.
The afvvl holder 21 is mounted to slide horizontally from side to side in a slide box 23, which in turn is slidably arranged for movement up and down. The aWl holder is moved back and forth by means of suitable adjustable connections from the lever 27 which is oscillated periodically by the cam 80. The slide box is moved up and down by means of a bell crank lever 29 to which it is connected by a link 30, the rear end of the bell crank lever carrying a roller which cooperates with a groove 31 in the face of the cam 80. The shape of the cuni groove 31 is suoli that the awl is raised to penetrate the work, is held up until the feeding device has moved the awl into vertical alinement with the needle, and is Withdrawn in advance of the downward movement of the needle.
Presser foot mechanism.
The presser foot 32 is mounted on the lower end of a square slide bar 33 which is guided for up and down movement in suitable slots in the front of the arms 14 behind the steam chamber plate 15. The toe of the presser foot rests upon the work over the `workl table, and is provided with a slot 34: through it in vertical alinement With the slot in the Work table. The presser foot is held down by a clamp lever 35 Which cooperates With a cam operated rocker arm or levr 36. The clamp lever has a square hole in it near its frontend through which the square slide bar 33 passes loosely. The clamp lever is supported at its front end by means of a spring 331 which is mounted on a rod 332 which projects up from the bottom of a pocket on the inner side of the front plate 15 between the arms 14 of the machine. The rod 332 passes loosely through a hole inthe front end of the clamp lever, and carries a stop 333 above'the end ofthe clamp lever. The rod 332 may be ,adjusted vertically by means of a set screw 335 to position the clamp lever and control the tension inthe spring 331. A spring 33,4 bears upon the top of the lever clamp 3,5. .Collars`336 are arranged between the springs and the clamp lever. The rod 332 is enlarged Where it goes through the clamp lever to hold the collars against the springs. The lever is positioned by the springs 331 and 334 to hold it horizontal and free ot the slide bar when the clam ing lever is not held down at its back end li 1 the rocker arm or lever 36, to which it is connected by the link 361.
The rocker lever 36 is pivoted at its middle upon a transverse shaft 73 to oscillate in a vertical plane behind the presser foot slide bar. The back end of the rocker lever has a roller 362 which rolls on one edge of the peripher of the cam disk 80 to hold it up and there y clamp the presser foot down. Operation of the presser foot.
By turning the hand Wheel 83 so as -lto bring the cam notch 38 under the roller 362 on the lever 36 which operates the presser foot clamp, the l resser foot is released and the Work can brought in position on the Work table under the presser foot. A slight movement of the top of the hand Wheel away from the operator clamps the presser foot down on the Work and the machine is ready for operation by power. The cam is rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, and the shapes of the various cam grooves and shapes and arrangement ofthe levers and links are such as to produce synchronous movement of the operating parts as follows:V

l claim the followingas my invention:

A sewing machine having a work table, a presser foot movable toward and from said work table, means for pressing the presser foot toward said table, a clamping bar slidably mounted on said presser foot and adapted to grip it and hold it against movement away from said work table, hand operated means for withdrawing said presser foot from said table, a spring supporting said clamping bar in position to slide loosely on said presser foot, positive means for moving one end of said clamping bar to cause it to grip and hold the presser foot against movement away from sai table, and means operating at the end of the stitch forming operation to release said gripping means.
3. In combination with a presser foot for a sewing machine having a work table and means for feeding the work, a sliding bar upon which said presser foot is fastened, and means for operating said presser Jfoot to clamp the work comprising a clamping lever slidably mounted on said bar, a movable support near one end of said lever for keeping it out of clamping position, and positively operatngmeans for moving the other end o 'saisi lever toelamp the and hold Yit down on :the work.

A sewing machine comprising a work table. a presser foot coperating therewith to hold the work, said presser foot being mounted on a reciprocatory holder having a slide, a spring for pressing said member and presser foot against the work, a clamp lever mounted on said slide,r means for p0- sitioningr said clamp lever loosely on said slide to permit said holder to move relatively thereto, means for causing said clamp lever to grip said slide and hold said holder and presser foot fast in adjusted position and means for reversing the operation osaid gripping means to move said clamp bar holder and presser foot away from the work.
8. ln combination in a sewing machine, a presser foot, a bar carrying said presser foot and mounted for reeiproeatory movement, a clamp lever having a transverse opening the walls of which loosely embrace said bar, means for tilting said clamp lever to clamp said bar, and means for supporting worl'r `table and 'l said presser foot being i said clamp lever normal to said bar to permit it to slide through said opening, said supporting means comprisin a pair of springs arranged to bear on oth sides of said clamp lever.

In combination in a sewing machine, a presser foot, a bar carrying said presser foot and mounted for reciprocatory movement, a clamp lever having a transverse opening the Walls of which loosely embrace said bar, means for tilting said clamp lever to clamp said bar, and means for supporting said clamp lever normal to said bar to permit it to slide through said opening, said supporting means comprising a rod arranged parallel to said bar and having a pair of `prings arranged upon it to bear on both sides of said clamp lever.

In combination in a sewing machine, a presser foot, a bar carrying said presser foot and mounted for reciprocatory movement, a clamp lever having a transverse opening the Walls of which loosely embrace said bar, means for tilting said clamp lever to clamp said bar, and means for supporting said clamp lever normal to said bar to permit it to slide through said opening, said `supporting means comprising a rod arranged parallel to said bar and having a spring arranged to bear on clamp lever, said rod going through the clamp lever and. having a collar on the other side of said clamp lever.

In combination in a sewing machine, a presser foot, a bar carrying said presser foot and mounted for reciprocatory movement, a clamp lever having a transverse opening the walls of which loosely embrace said bar, means for tilting said clamp lever to clamp said bar, and ing said clamp lever normal to said ar to permit it to slide through said opening, said supporting means comprising a rod arranged for lengthwise adjustment parallel to said bar and having a spring arranged to bear on one side of said clamp lever.
