To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IRVING L. KEITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of assachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cementing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cementing machines, and more particularly to improvements in machines for cementing cloth linings, or doublers for the Vamps, or other parts of shoes, Where it is desirable to have the cement applied in dots, instead of over the entire surface.
While it is desirable that this Work may be rapidly and thoroughly performed, it is particularly desirable that It be performed without applying any of the adhesive to the opposite side of the cloth from that to which it is intended that the cement be applied, which undesirable result is liable to occur where the cloth is pressed onto a cementing surface by hand, as the hands of the operatorare likely' to become soiled, by comin in contact With said surface.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of cementing machine which is adapted to apply the cement in separate dots or patches to a sheet of textile, or other flexible material, and which will perfonn this work thoroughly and rapidly and Without dan er of having the cement applied to the sur ace opposite the cemented surface.
I accomplish this object by the means shown in the accompanying drawing, in which an embodiment of my invention is shown, and in -which:'

spaces between the teeth of each rim are approximately the same, and the teeth are formed to taper slightly, and are provided with transverse faces d at their ends, as best shown in Fig. 2.
A cement applying roll 6 is mounted on a shaft f directly above and in parallelism with the shaft b, the surface of said roll having a series of concentric ribs 0 formed thereon, which correspond in number to the number of rows of teeth on the shaft 7) and in diameter to the diameter of the path of the faces (13 of teeth (I, said ribs being arranged in rolling contact with said faces.
A press roll g is mounted on a shaft 71 directly over and in parallelism with the shaft 1', and is provided with a series of concentric ribs 9 which are mounted exactly midway of the ribs 6 and therefore directly over the spaces therebetween, said ribs 9' being of substantially less Width than the spaces between the ribs e, and the peripheral diameter of said ribs 9' being approximately the same as that of the ribs 6.

While the ribs 9 do not press the material directly against the ribs 8' they do so indirectly, as
the press it down into the groove between said ribs 6', so that it is drawn over the surfaces ofthe ribs with sullicient force to cause firm enga ement with the surface thereof, as articu arly illustrated in Fig. 4. The app ication of the patches of cement to the material at all points at which it should be applied is thus assured. The material will be discharged from between the rolls onto the wires, where a second operator, preferably, may remove it and apply it to the piece to be reinforced.
The relative diameters, or positions of the work-engaging faces of the ribs c and y will be var ed from the location shown, according to the thickness and flfixlblllty of the material to be cemented. In no instance, boweveiyis engagement of the faces of. the ribs 9 with the faces of the ribs a possible, so that ccmcn't could be applied thereto, thus obviating all danger of having cement applied to the side of the material next the press roll.
lVith the abovc-described construction, the faces of the teeth a will always engage the same point on the faces of the ribs e, so that cement will, at no, time, be applied thereto at other than certain points, and continued application of the cement, to the same points, without havin it removed by application to the work, w: 1 not cause the amount 01' cement applied to be increased to a material extent.
While the diameter of the ment of the faces of the teet ameter of the faces of the ribs c are shown as the same, it will be apparent that these diameters may be varied, so long as they are arranged and driven in proportion so that the same points on the ribs will be successively engaged by the teeth.
I claim 1. A cementing machine comprising a rotatabl; mounted roll having a series of circnlarly-arranged rows of radially-extending teeth thereon, said teeth having transverse faces at their ends arranged at uniform distances from the axis of the roll, and each row of teeth being spaced apart from the others, means to apply cement to said faces as the roll is rotated, and a second roll arran d to be heldin prcssin engagement wit said first named roll an to be rotated in unison therewith.

A cementing machine having a 08- ment-applying roll composed of a series of circularly-arranged rows of radially-extending teeth, said teeth having end faces at uniform distances from the axis, of the roll, and each row of teeth bein need a art from the others, means to 01 5 liqui eement so that the ends of said teeth di therein, when the roll is rotated, and a mi having circular, cement-receiving faces arranged and driven in rolling contact with the faces of said fingers, the circumferential length of said receiving faces and the len th of the path in which the faces of sale teeth travel corresponding, so that the facssof said teeth engage the same on said receiving faces'su'ccessively.
