  • a presser finger Prior to the top and bottom feeds leaving their grip on the work, a presser finger is brought into engagement with the top of the work to hold it against the throat plate while the needle is in the work, such finger remaining in this position until the top feed rises, the bottom feed falls and they both move forward to again shift into position for the next feeding stroke, at whichtime the presser finger is lifted to permit the feeding of the work. To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN P. Wnrs, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Nyack, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements, in Feed Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a curves of a small radius, as the fingers ofgloves and the like. The invention is also useful in stitching What is known in the trade as piping, used in the manufacture of fancy shoes, which are at present in vogue. The requirements for such work necessitate a very compact top feeding mechanism to take up as little space around the needle as possible, and the mechanism must be entirely out of the way of the operators fin gers to permit the rapid handling of the work, and it is also essential that a clear vision of the line of scam directly at the needle point be had, also that the needle and presser finger be as small as possible so that the work may be turned quickly while the machine is in motion and during the time The organization and operation of the feeding elements, in the present improvement are such that when the needle is out of the work the bottom feed is above the throat plate, so as to lift the work clear of the same, while the top feed is down on top of the work and holds it so that the movement of both feeds advances the work at a uniform speed. Prior to the top and bottom feeds leaving their grip on the work, a presser finger is brought into engagement with the top of the work to hold it against the throat plate while the needle is in the work, such finger remaining in this position until the top feed rises, the bottom feed falls and they both move forward to again shift into position for the next feeding stroke, at whichtime the presser finger is lifted to permit the feeding of the work. From this, it will be readily understood that as the presser finger has a very small surfacein contact with the work, it may befreely turned while the machine is in motion, so that irregular lines may befollowed with facility. 1

The improvements are shown applied to what is known as a Metropolitan top and bottom rotary shaft machine, but the invention may be used with other types of machine by simple modifications and, there fore, but a brief description of such a machine is deemed necessary. The machine base 1, has the usual cloth plate2, the vertical portion 3, and the top or overhanging arm 4, terminating in the head 28. The base carries therotary shaft 5 operating in suitable bearings thereof, while the top arm carries the rotary shaft 6 here inafter referred to as a top shaft or top driving shaft, also operating in suitable Patented c t. a, 1917. p
bearings. Thes shafts?) and 6 are connected for rotary motion by the crank connections 7. Any well known form of stitching mechanism may be employed, but I have shown a Well known form of the Metropolitanstitching mechanism, comprising an eccentric 8 secured to the bottom shaft 5, see Figs. 1 and 9, having a strap connection 9 connected at10 to the crank arm 11, securee to the looper shaft 12 so as to rock said looper shaft in its bearings 13. A. bevel gear 1% also secured to the shaf 5 coiiperates with a similar gear 15 and constitutes a right angle drive to operate a shaft 16. This shaft 16 has a crank portion 16, on which is located a split block 17 (see Fig. This split block fits between parallel members 17 secured to the looper shaft 12 and these parallel members therefore form a fork for thesplit block 17. Vihen the shaft 16 is rotated by the bevelgear the crank 16 also rotates and therefore shifts the split blockli, which in turn shifts the fork 17 secured to the looper shaft and thereby shifts. the looper shaft lengthwise, or end wise in its bearings 13, so that the looper 18 thus has the, usual four motions, so as to take a loop of thread from the needle on one side and deliver a loop of looper thread at the other side thereof in the formation of a double chain stitch. This looper 18 is car ried in the looper holder 19, which is secured to the looper shaft 12. The needle actuating means comprises a crank disk 0 secured to the top shaft 6, and carries a crank pin 21, on which a pitman 22 is mounted, so as to reciprocate vertically the needle bar 23 to which it is attached as at 24s. This connection 2% is provided with an extended portion which slides in the way of the head, see Fig. 3, to guide the needle bar and prevent axial movement thereof. lhe needle bar passes through and reciprocates in a slidingbushing 23, which in turn slides in a bushing fixed in the head 28 of the top arm at, and this needle bar .43 is provided with a needle chuck 29 to hold the needle 30. The needle is so timed as to cefiiperate with the looper in the well known manner.
'lhebottom feed mechanism is of the well known Metropolitan construction and will likewise be described only brieflf. The base 1 is provided with bearings 31, see 1, 2 and 7, bored to receive the rock shaft 32 which pivotally supports the rocker frame 33 carrying a shaft 34 at the top thereof. This shaft is secured to one end of a connection 35 which is operated by the adjustable crank generally indicated by 36, carried by a disk 37 secured to the end of the main shaft 5. A feed lift eccentric 38 is also secured to the main shaft 5 and operates to lift the feed bar 39, to which a feed dog s0 is secured. This bar 39 has an extended portion reaching back and connected with the shaft 3-51, .as at ll, between the two hubs d2 of the rocker frame 33. An angle member d3, carried by the feed bar 39, coacts with the eccentric 38, so. that the. rise and fall movement of the feed bar and dog at any speed is positive. lhe top feed mechanism comprises a disk 14, see Fig. 8, secured to the end of the top shaft 6, and has an adjustable crank 1-5 secured thereto having a connection 46, with its other end connected as at 17 to a slide block 18, shiftable on a curved arm 19, thereby to instantan ously vary the stroke of the top feed. "When adjusted to the desired stroke, a clamping screw may be tightened .to preyent movement of the block 48. A stop 51 is provided in the top of the curved arm 49 to limit the movement of the block 18 in that direction. The top arm 1 is provided with bearings 52 and for a rock shaft 54, and the curved arm d9 is secured to the rock shaft, as at 55. A depending arm 56 is secured to the other end of the rock shaft and the lower end of this depending arm 56 has pivotally secured there to a link 57, which connects with a top feed bar 58, swinging on a pivot 59 carried by a slottedbushing 60, secured in the too of the machine head 28. The top of this feed bar 58 is slotted at 61 for vertical movement, relative to its pivot 59 to compensate for vary ng thickness of material. The l nk 5. glves the feeding stroke to the ton fpeddog. About midway of the length of the feed bar 08 is a projecting lug 62 pivotally secured to a plunger or pistoh 63, carrying a pin G l wor ring in a slot 65 of a barrel or casing 66, which has a threaded nut 67 to close its top and provide a bearmg for the stem 38 of the plunger 63. A spring 69 is located in the barrel to give pressure to the plunger 63, and this pies sure is transmitted by means of the feed bar 58 to the top feed dog 70 secured as at (l to the bottom of the feed bar 58. This pin 76, is provided with a crank arm 78 which carries a shoulder screw 7 9, to which is connected for free movement a Farrel. or casing 80, also having a coiled spring 81.

This barrel is similar to the spring barrel (56, and therefore also has a pin and slot connection 64-, except that the plunger or piston 82 therein has extended poi--- tion 83reaching down and connecting as at 82 to the sliding bushing 26. A collar 84 is secured to the lower end of this bushing 26 and this collar carries avertical piece 85, which serves to strengthen the construction at the screw connection 82-. The collar 84 is so shaped that it will receive the shank 86 of the presser finger, so that the same can be vertically adjusted. This shank isattached to the" collar 84 at an angle so as to permit free access to its attaching means for ready adjustment thereof. The. presser finger is reduced in width as at 87, see Figs. 2 and 3, and is so shaped as to fit close to the needle and has abottom portion 88 in position to press on thework, and which part 88 is so shaped as to work in the slot 89 of the topfe ed 70. It will.
be observed that this presser finger receives its rising and falling movement from the top driving shaft through themedium of the piston 82 and its casing or barrel $0, and that the top feed also recelves its IlS- ingand falling movements from the same 21 and 76 would interfere with an upwardly extended needle bar, it is, therefore, only of suflicient length to connect at 24 with its pitman 22. As, heretofore the needle threads are usually partly under the con- 'trol of the upper end of the needle bar and as it has been found by long practice that such threadv control is very satisfactory, that is to say the movement of the needle bar has been utilized as a common take-up for the top threads, therefore, to obtain the same effect with this short needle bar, I have provided a wire thread carrier 90, operating in a bushing 91, secured in the machine head 28, and this thread carrier extends down into the machine head as at 92, and is connected as at 98 with the needle bar driving means for vertical reciprocation with the needle bar. Thus. it will be seen that a very light thread handling means is provided as a substitute for the usual long needle bar and it is capable of high speed and is free from noise.
Two means of raising the top feed and presser finger from the work are provided, one to be operated by foot and the other by hand. A rod 94, carrying a coiled'spring and collar 95 extends down through the machine base and is connected with a floor treadle, (not-shown) to be operated by the foot of the operator. This rod connects, as
at 96, with a lever 97 pivotally secured to the machine' arm 4 as at 98. This lever has its other end 99 in position to engage an top feed bar 58. The usual hand lifter 104 also operates in this slot 102' to liftthe top j that position for any length of time, the footfeed by hand when desired and hold'it in lifting means being more generally used for rapid operation. f
It will thus be seen from the foregoing that if the machine is started up at speed while either of the top'feeds is in engagement', the action of the cranks is absorbed by the springs located in the spring-barrels and the pins 64 and 64 which slide in their slots freely so thatno damage will result, this'mechanism thus forming a shock absorb ing means.
'It will be observed from the foregoing that the organization ofthe parts is such' that the mode of operation set forth in that part of the description preceding the description of the figures'of the drawings takes place, sothat it is unnecessary to again repeat this matter.
- It will also be understood that the various details maybe more or less changed without departing from thescope or spirit of this improvement. 4 I r I claim as my invention: 1. In a sewing machine, the combination of a rotarytop driving shaft, feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, said top feed and presser finger having pivotal connection with the top driving shaft through the same crankpin, the means for operating the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the.
presser finger .may remainin engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning of the work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination of a rotary top driving shaft, feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, said top feed and presser finger having pivotal connection with the top driving shaft through the same crank pin, the means for operating the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning of the work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith 31in a sewing machine, the combination of feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presserfinger of relatively small dimensions, and means for operating it, the operating means for the feeding mechanism. and the presser finger being so organized that the presserfinger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning of the Work when the presser' finger is in engagement therewith may be efi'ected, the operatingmeans for thetop feed" including a springpressed piston and a crank-connected casin In a, sewing machine, the combination of feeding-mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed andmeans for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, and means for operating it, the operating means for the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning ofthe work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected, said top feed having a slot and said presser finger working therethrough, the operating means for the top feed including a spring-pressed piston and a crank-connected casin 5. In a sewing machine, the combination of feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a. presser finger-of relatively small dimensions, and: means for operating it, the operating means for the feeding mechanlsm and the presser finger being so organlzed that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement there with whereby the free turning of the work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected, the operating means for the presser finger including aspring-pressed piston and a crank-connected casing.
6. In a sewing machine, the combination,
of feeding mechanism comprising a bottom andatop feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, and means for operating it, the oper ating means for the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning. of the work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected, said top feed having i letand sair worhin,

7. In a sewing machine, the combination of feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, and means for operating it, the operating means for the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in en gagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement there with whereby the free turning of the workwhen the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected, the operating means for the top feed and the presser finger including a pair of spring-pressed, pistons and a pair of crank-connected casings.
8. In a sewing machine, the combination of feeding. mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dnnensions, and means for operating it, the
operating means for the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning of the work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected, said top feed having a slot and said presser finger working therethrough, the operating means for the top feed and the presser finger including a pair of spring-pressed pistons and a pair of crank-connected casings.
9. In a sewing machine, the combination of a rotary top driving shaft, feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, said top feed. and presser finger having pivotal connection with the top driving shaft through the same crank pin, the means for operating the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning of the Work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected, the operating means for the top feed including a rock shaft and a shiftable sliding block connected with said top driving shaft.
10. In a sewing machine, the combination of a top driving shaft, a rock shaft connected, therewith, a. four-motion top feed cons nected with said top driving shaft and rock shaft, and: a presser finger also connecte-lwith the top driving shaft and having part of the motions of said top feed, the connecting means between the top feed and the driving shaft and betweenthe presser finger and the driving shaft each including a spring-actuated member.
11. In a sewing machine, the combination of feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, and means for. operating it, the operating means for the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organ izedthat the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the freeturning of the work when the presser fingeris in engagement therewith may be effected, the operating means for the top feed including a spring-pressed piston and a crank-connected casing and also including a rock shaft and a shiftable sliding block.
12. In a sewing machine, the combination of feeding mechanism comprising a bottom and .a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively small dimensions, and means for operating it, the operating means for the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free turning of the work when the presser finger is in engagement therewith may be effected, the" operating means for the presser finger including a spring-pressed piston and a crank-connected casing and the operating means for the top feed-including a rock shaft and a shiftable sliding block.
13. In a sewing machine, the combination of feeding mechanism comprising a bot tom and a top feed and means for operating them, a presser finger of relatively-small dimensions, and means for operating it, the
operating means for the feeding mechanism and the presser finger being so organized that the presser finger may remain in engagement with the work when the top and bottom feeds are out of engagement therewith whereby the free-turning of the work when the presser finger is in engagement therewithmay be effected, the operating means for the top feed and the presser finger including a pair of spring-pressed pistons and a pair of crank-connected casings and the operating means for the top feed also including a rock shaft and a shiftable sliding block. i
14. In a sewing machine, the combination of a top drivingshaft, a rock shaft, means connecting said 'rock shaft with said top driving shaft and including a shiftable sliding block, feeding mechanism including a top feed connected with said rock shaft and also with said top driving shaft, and a presser finger also connected with said top driving shaft forreciprocationthereby, each of said connections with the top driving shaft including a shock absorbing means. v
15. In a sewing machine, the combination of a top driving shaft, a rock shaft, means connecting said rock shaft with said top driving shaft and including a shiftable sliding block, feeding mechanism including a top feed connected with said rock shaft and also 'with said top driving shaft, and a presser finger also connected with said top cluding a spring-pressed piston and a crank'-' connected casing.
17. In a 'sewing machine, the combination of a top driving'shaft, a rock shaft, means connecting said rock shaft with said top driving shaft and including a shiftable sliding block, feeding mechanism including a top feed connected with said rock shaft and also with said top driving shaft, and a presser finger also connected with said top driving shaft, the connection between the top feed and its driving shaft and between the presser finger and the top driving shaft including a pair of spring-pressed pistons and a pair of crank-connectedcasings.

29. In a sewing machine, the combination of a driving shaft, three reciprocating memherscrank-connected with said driving shaft, a pair thereof extending one through the other and having asliding engagement relatively to each other, a work-engaging instrumentality connected with each of said men bers tor'movement thereby,'means for pivotally supporting one of said members, and means for imparting a to-and-fro movement to said pivo'tally supported member and including a rock shaft connected with said driving shaft.
30. In a sewing machine having a throat plate, the combination of a bottom feed effective to lift the work above and clear of the throat plate when the needle is out of the work, a top feed coiiperating with the bottom feed to hold the work so that the work will :be advanced at a uniform speed by said top and bottom feeds, a presser linger effective to engage the top of the work prior to the top and bottom feeds leaving their grip on the work and while the needle is in the work to hold it'against the throat plate, said presser finger maintaining such holding position imtil the feeding movement of the top and bottom feed, I and means :for actuating the top and bottom feed and presser finger, the foot of the :presser finger constructed of a size and shape to permit the free turning of the work while such presser finger is in engagement therewith 'and the feeds are free thereof, substantially "as described. p
'31. In a sewing machine, the combination of a pair of work-engaging instrumentalities one comprising a feed dog and the other a presser finger, top driving shaft, means connecting said top driving shaft with said instr-umentalities and compris ng pair of crank-connected members each comprising a pair of members having a sliding engage ment relatively to each other whereby a rising and falling movement is imparted to said instrumentalities, and means for imparting to said feeding instrnmentality a to and-fro movement.
In a se-w-i-ng machine, the combinat'on of a pair of work-engaging instrument; lities one comprising a feed dog and the other a presser finger, a top driving shaft, means connecting said top driving shaft with said instrumentalities and comprising a pair of crank-connected members each comprising a pair of members having a sliding engagement relatively to each other whereby a rising and falling movement is imparted to said instrinnentalities, and means for imparting to said feeding instrumentality a toand-fro movement and comprising a rock shaft connected with said top driving shaft.
83. In a sewing machine, the combination of a pair of work-engaging instrumcntalities one comprising a feed dog and the other a presser finger, a top driving shaft, means connecting said top driving shaft with said instr uincntalities and comprising a pai-r'ojf crank-connected members each comprising a pair of members having a sliding engagement relatively to each other whereby a rising and falling movement is imparted to said instrnmentalities, and means for imparting to said feeding instrumentality' a, to-and-fro movement and comprising a rock shaft having an adjustable connection with said driving shaft, said connection including a sliding block. 7
34. In a. sewing machine, the combination of a work-engaging instrnmentality, a rotary top driving shaft, a spring-pressed piston connected with said topdriving shaft, and means supporting said instrnmentality and pivotally connected to said piston.
35. In a sewing machine the combination of a pair of work-engaging instrumentalities, one a presser finger and the other a feed dog, a driving shaft, and a spring pressed piston pivotally connected to each of said instrumentalities and also connected to said driving shaft.
