PAUL BQNGi m lsiiesre i are TOOL ILLINQL$1AQ9WQ6L4$9N Application filed April 29, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tool-holders which are especially adapted to hold shaper tools, although the invention may also be applied to tool-holders adapted and intended to be used in lathes and other metal-working machines.
Among the objects of the invention are to secure the tool firmly in the holder, to provide means whereby the tool may be held in various positions, and to provide a shaper tool-holder which may be used to support the tool at a point located at some distance in advance of the tool-holder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a tool-holder embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is another elevation ofthe tool-holder. :Fig. 3 is a view of a split sleeve which may be placed in the tool-holder when a slotting bar of small diameter is to be used; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of said sleeve. Fig. 5 is a view, on an enlarged scale, of a plug forming a part of the tool-holder. Fig. 6 is a' view showing the tool-holder as being used to support a slotting bar.
, The tool-holder comprises a shank 1 and a head 2. The head comprises a cylindrical portion 3 having an axial opening 4 which extends at right angles to the shank 1. The head 2 is made compressible by forming a slot 5 therein, said slot extending from the outer side of the head to the opening 4. A screw 6 has a screw-thread connection with the head 2 at one side of the slot v5 and extends freely through an opening in the head at the opposite side of said slot, said screw thus constituting means for drawing the two sides of the head together.
At the side of the cylindrical portion 3 which is opposite the shank, said portion has a slot 7 which extends transversely of and intersects the axial opening 4.
The openi g 4 is adapted to receive a 0y 1"- v r-n Patented Oct. 9, 191 '7.
Serial No. 24,654.
lindrical' plug 8, which plug has a transverse opening!) adapted to register with the slot 7 A tool a may be inserted through the slot 7 and into the opening 9 and secured in said opening by means of a set screw 10, said set screw extending axially of the plug 8.
It will be seen that the plug 8 may be turned .in the opening 4 in order that the tool a may occupy the desired position with reference to the work. 'By means of the screw 6 the cylindrical portion 3 may be contracted to tightly clamp the plug 8 and thus firmly hold the tool a in the desired position. The walls of the slot 7 support the tool close to the cutting point. As the opening 4 is in the plane of the shank 1, the thrust of the tool is transmitted directly to the shank, thereby obviating twisting strains and vibration. v
When the tool holder is to be usedin cutting a groove or performing a similar operation within the interior of a piece of work, the plug 8 is removed and a bar such as the one indicated at 11 in Fig. 6, substituted therefor. The bar 11 has in one end a transverse opening 12 to receive a tool 6. The
tool b is secured in the opening 12 by means of a set screw 13 extending axially of the bar 11. If it be desirable to use a bar 11 of smaller diameter than the opening 4, a reducer sleeve 14 may be placed in theopening 4 and the bar inserted into said sleeve. The sleeve is made compressible by forming a longitudinal slot 15 in the sleeve, said slot completely severing the sleeve at one side. The resiliency of the sleeve may be increased by forming a groove 16 in the sleeve diametrically opposite the slot 15. The sleeve may be provided with a flange or head 17 at one end to stop against the end of the cylindrical portion 3.
I claim as my invention:
A tool holder comprising a shank and a transversely arranged split sleeve forming a head, the axis of the bore of said sleeve lying in a plane transversely of said shank, said sleeve having a radial slot which intersects the bore of the sleeve, a cylindrical plug having a radial aperture to receive a tool extending through the slot in the sleeve, the walls of said slotbeing rigid and shaped to engage and support said tool close to the cutting point thereof, a set screw extending through one end of the plug for supporting and securing said tool in said aperture, and
a single clamp screw arranged to compress the sleeve and thereby clamp the plug in said cylindrical opening.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
