' ERIK WALDElMAR, JOHANSON, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
CIRCUIT-BREAKER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIK WV. JoHANsoN, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Circuit-Breakers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism for controlling electric lights 'by automatically opening and closing the lamp circuit, the opening and closing operations being timed to occur at predetermined times as desired. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consistsin the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in this specification, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated'in the accompanying drawingswhich r form a part of the specification and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved mechanism in combination with a lamp circuit which is shown closed througlr the instru'mentality of my device.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of my mechanism, but partly in section to aiford a better illustration, in an altered position whereby the lamp circuit is broken.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a sole noid mounted in a cylindrical casing 2 which is securely fastened to a wall or other suit-- suitable support in which is the -in the top 0 able support in any manner. The solenoid is provided with a freely movable core 3 of considerable length which at its upper end carriesthe pin 1 6f relatively small diameter and which projects through a perforation said casing 2.
To the core 3 a pitman 8 is pivotally se-' cured which at its lower .end is connected by pivot 9 to a lever 10 fulcrumed upon a 11, one end of said lever being formed with an elongated slot 12 and the opposite end terminating in a rounded portion 13. A pin 14 is movably disposed in the elongated slot 12 and is connected to the'piston rod 15 which extends into the cylinder 16, through a perforation in its lower end, and is provided with the piston 17 of a diameter substantially the equivalent to the inner diameter of said cylinder v16 within which said piston is adapted for reciprocalmovement. The upper end of the cylinder 16 is provided with the stem 18 port 19 which is controlled Specification of Letters Patent.
;in which is formed the port 23.
by the screw valve 20. The lower end of the cylinder 16 is provided with the intake ball valve 21 and with the check valve 22 Adjacent the lower end of the core 3 upon a pivot 24 I provide a trigger comprising the arm 25 and pin 26 having catch 27 and the contact arm 28 which is curved and terminates at its free extremity in a point. The said trigger is connected by a contractile spring 29 with a bell-crank-lever 30 fulcrumed upon a pin 31 and formed integral with the handle 32. The longer arm of the bell-cranlz-lever carries an arm 33 terminating in the conductor 34 adapted for releasable engagement with the contact arms 35. The shorter arm of the bell-crank-lever isformed with a tooth 36 for engagement 1 with the said catch 27. One of the contact runs 35 is connected by wire 37 with the solenoid 1, said wire 37 being eonnectedbv' another wire 38 with a series of lamps 39 which lamp series is connected to the switch .0 which is connected by wire 41 with the other contact arm The said switch 40 is connected by wire 42 with the main circuit #13 which is also connected to the lamp series and push buttons 43 connected to the lamp series are also connected to. the wire 4A which runs tethe solenoid 1.
The operation of the device is as follows: In Fig. 2 the lights are shown off because the circuit is broken. To light the lights the operator manually moves the handle 32 upward thus, through themedium of the bell-crank-lever 30, depressing the conductor and causing it to connect the contact arms 35 and close the circuit. This operation also,
places the tooth 36 into engagement with the catch 27 which prevents the return of the bell-erank-lever to initial position which would otherwise. result from the retractile action of the spring 29. This operation, further, energizes the'solenoid which gradually raises the core 3 and, through the medium of pitman 8 and lG\61 10 lowers the piston 17 thus drawing air into the cylinder 16 through the port'19 and forces air from that cylinder, below the said piston, through the check valve 22 with its port 23. The resistance of the air in the cylinder 16 retards the upwardmovement of the core 3.
-Ifig. 1 shows the device just previous to its operation upon the trigger. .A slight fgrther upward movement of the core 3 will Patented Oct. 9, 191'7. I Application filed August 21, 1916. Serial N 0. 116,067. a I
actuate the trigger through its engagement with the arm 28 thus raising the pin 26 and catch 27 and permitting the spring 23) to raise the bell-crank-lever 30 and so move the conductor 34 out'of engagement with the contact arms 35. The solenoid now becomes dcnergized and the weight of the core will cause the same to move downward again, this movement being hampered however by the air above the piston 1'7 in the cylinder 16 which must be slowly forced out through the valve port 19. The length of time required for the core 3 to move through gravity to its lowest position depends upon the rapidity with which the air can be expelled from the cylinder 16 througlrthe said port 19 which may be partially or entirely closed by means of the screw valve 20.
What is claimed is I In an adjustable circuit breaker including a pair of contact arms, a conductor adapted For releasable engagement with said contact arms, a trigger, a, bell-crank-lever connecting said lever and conductor and adjustable with relation to the former member, a relractilc spring connecting said trigger and bellcranli-lever, a solenoid having a freely movable core, a pitnian carried by said core, a lever pivotally connected to said pitlnan and adapted for engagement with said trigger to actuate the same to permit said retractile spring to ca'use movement oi said bell-cranklever with relation to said trigger and a retarding device connected to the said lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto allixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
