EASEL.
Application filed oct ber 2a, 1916. Serial Nb. 127,068.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ADRI DE Gnoo'r, a sub ject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, county v and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Easels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to easels thatare particularly adapted for artists use and one object of the invention is to construct the easel so that a canvas thereupon may be easily positioned without necessitating the removal of the canvas from the easel. The easel is preferably constructed so that it can be readily changed to adapt it for use with a large or a small canvas.
Another object of the invention is to construct the easel so that it can be readily folded whereby it can be easily transported.
As showing a specific embodiment of the invention reference is made to the drawing forming a part of this specification and in which drawing,
Figure 1 is a side view of the easel.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the easel.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken as on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig.2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
- Figs. 4 to 9 inclusive are views of different details. In Figs. 4 to 9 the several parts are shown on a somewhat larger scale than inFigs. 1 to 8. v I
I The easel comprises front uprights or sidebars 1 which are preferably detachablysea cured together at their tops by means of a cross-bar 2. A rear upright or prop 3 is connected at its upperend to the'central portion 4; of the cross-bar 9. There is detachably securedto the back of the front uprights an shape cross-bracing 5 which comprises-brace members, 6' and .7 that are connected at their central portions to each other, as by means of a bolt 8. Each of these brace members is slottedor cutout-1 21s at 9, soas to receive holding screws .20 which pass through the .brace members and thus serve as means for? securing the bracing which comprises these brace, members to theback of thefront uprights or side-bars. vThis bracing serves to prevent a side sway of the easel :while the artist is working upon a canvas, as A, thereupon. The lower ends'of the front uprights or side-bars, l are con nected by. a bottom transverse member 11,

that serves to tie the lower ends of the sidebars to eachother. The tie or connecting member 11 also serves as a foot-rest'for the artist whereby he can more securely hold the easel in place while working on the can va s. The rear upright or prop 3 can be connected, if desired, to the forward uprights in any suitable manner as, for instance, bymeans of connectors indicated at 12.
The cross-bar 2 is cut out or notched, as at 13, alongitsunder side, so as'to receive in the notched portions thereof the upperends of the front uprights or side-bars 1. The upper endof the side-bars is also cut out, as at 14, so as to receive the cross-bar 2 and the construction is such that the.
notched portion ofthe upper ends of the front uprights or. side-bars and the notched portion of the cross-bar will'cooperate to maintain the side-bars an'dthe cross-barin the desired position relative to each other. As thecross-bar has several notches the up rights can be adjusted either toward or I from each other and can be maintained in the desired adjusted position by the'crossbar. 'Themembers of thecross-bracing 5 as heretoforeindicated, are out out or slotted, as at 9. -This construction has been provided to enable the artist to position or re adjust the front uprights cr side-bars as desired, and 'topermit the cross-bracing to be employed to brace-the front uprights is supported upon the uprights through the medium of a movable transversely-extending supporting..bar15 carrying. holders 16 upon which the lower edge of the'canvas rests. This transversely extending supportin g b'ar15 passes'through slots'17 in thesidebarsLT Each .of the side-bars comprises a front notched membertlS, which member 19'which consists of anupper portion '19 and a'lower portion 19. The front notched I and thus serve to guide said bar.
of that extend a substantial length along said front member. The front of the grade-- way member 19 is provided with a grooved portion 20that serves to receive a roller 21; The front notched member 18 and guideway member 19 are spaced from each other and provide the slot 17 heretofore referredto. he transversely-extending supportlng bar 15 extends through the slots 17 and the front part of this supporting bar enters the notched portions of the uprights, and 1t occupiesthis position when serving as a support for. the canvas. On the back of the supporting bar there are mounted two sets of adjustable guide members 22, each of which has a pair of ears 22 that extend upon opposite sides of the guide-way member 19.. Each of these adjustable guide members carries the roller 21 heretofore re;- ferred to. When the transversely-extending supporting bar is in position for holding the canvas this roller 21 is out of engagement with the guide-way member 19 but the ears 22 just referred to'will extendrearwardly at least a distance past the forward edge of the guide-way member 19.
When it is desired to raise or lower the canvas the transversely-extending supporting bar 1-5 is moved rearwardly out of the particular notched portions in: which it is then. seated toa: position where it can be moved vertically past the rear ends of the supporting bar is thus moved rearwardly preparatory to effecting this change the'ears.
22 will guide-the roller 21 into the grooved portion 20 and consequently as the support ing rodis being raised, orlowered, this roller will slide along; the grooved portion The ad justable guide members 22 are constructed, as will be manifest from an inspection of the drawing, so that they can be moved horizontally or longitudinally in respect to the supporting bar. maintained in place onthe transversely-extending supporting bar 15, as by means'of thescrews 16*, when. it is desired to. hold them against movement along the bar. v
'It has therefore been indicated that-the easel shown can be readily folded: whereby it can-be transported from place to place. Toiaccompli'sh this the rear upright or prop 3 ismadeoftwo'pieces, 3 and' 3.,which are connected together as by'means of a hinge 3 and a hook 3 Similarly in; each of the front: uprights or'side-bars, each front-memben .18, .which has been heretofore described as being made ofrtwo pieces, 18" andi18", has a hinge; connection 18%,; and the two The holders 16 are pieces 19'and19 of each guide-way member 19 are connected, as by means of a hinge 19 The hinge 1'8 is on the front ofthe inember 18- and the hinge 19 is on the rear of the member 19, thus facilitating a ready folding of the lower pieces 18 and 19", respectively, on the upper pieces 18 and 19'. The upperends of the upper pieces 'or'portionsl-S and 19- are-preferably permanently rigidly secured together. The lower ends of the members 18' and 19 are connected to gether, when: the side-bars are in their unfolded or extended position as shown in Fig. 1,, by; means of. hooks 1 which effec tually connect the lower piecesso as to make t the easel comparatively rigid when in use. The upper end of? the canvas can be secured in place by any suitable means as, for instance, by means of a' rod 23 which has a swivel member-23' adjustably securing it in. place, at 2 1, to: the-rear upright or prop 3, and by a! clamp 25 which serves as a means for connecting the-front end ofthe rod' to thecanvas A. The upper end of: the rear upri ht 3 can be detachably connected to the, cross-bar in any suitable manner, as by a screw connection 2?; The ends of the bottom transverse or foot engaging member 11 are also detachably seemed, as by means of the pin: connections l l 'shown. From what has preceded it WillzlOQ clear that the easel can be readily disassembled and folded soas to occupy acomparatively small space. V
It will be manifest that. the invention may be embodied in various forms without departing from; the spirit and scope of the inventi on.v v
