. Application filed June 21, 1915. Serial m. 35,273.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, FRANK B. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Processes of Making Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to the art of making car wheels and more particularly to the preliminary stages in the construction of car and locomotive wheel tires.
7 It will, however, be manifest as the invention is better understood that it has a wider and more general application.
Prior to my invention it has been generally the custom to construct car and locomotive wheel tires and the like by casting a large cylindrical ingot through the bottom of a mold. This provides an ingot having a small central opening at its top, which opening is surrounded by segregated metal, unfitting the end of the ingot for use in the construction of a tire. This metal has ordinarily been re-worked at a consequent reduction in the output of the equipment and at considerable loss, or if used has resulted in the production of an imperfect and unsafe tire. The ingot is ordinarily cut transversely to provide a number of ingot parts from which blanks are to be formed, and it is a purpose of this invention to provide a process or method for the construction of blanks which will permit the use of the imperfect ingot ends without evil efiect upon the tires produced therefrom and without requiring re-melting of these ingot ends.
A further object of the invention is the accomplishment of this end at small cost and without the necessity of providing complicated machinery. o
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.-
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of an ingot from which the blanks are to be made;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of an ingot end portion flattened and ready for forming into a blank; and I Fig. 3 is a section through a die for punching the central aperture in the ingot end and showing the finished blank.
As will be observed in Fig. 1,.the ingot 4, i
which has been poured from the bottom,
possesses the usual pipe cavity or opening 5 in the top, about which is gathered a quantity of imperfect and non-usable metal 6. In accordance with the usual custom, this ingot is out along lines 7 to form ingot portions from which the blanks are to be constructed. The ingot portions 8, which together constitute the lower end and body of the ingot, are formed into blanks without removing an appreciable amount of the material, punching being first up and then down and spreading the metal so that merely a thin section is ultimately cut out. The end portion 9 is formed into a blank in accordance with my invention by first fiattening it, as seen in Fig. 2, to close the opening 5, and to concentrate the imperfect metal 6 as near the. center as possible. This flattened end portion is then laid upon a die 8 having an opening 9' with a flaring side wall 10. 'When in-this position a punch 11 of diameter equal substantially to the upper end of the opening 9 descends upon the ingot end and cuts the central part 12 which contains the imperfect metal 6 to form the blank aperture 13 and this without spreading any of the metal at the center of the ingot end portion so that none of the imperfect metal remains in the formed blank. It may be mentioned that after the blank is thus formed it is ready for rolling into a plicated than that needed to -make blanks from the parts 8 of the ingot, although itdifiers from this equipment in that a punch which will shear an aperture entirely through the blank is provided instead of a punch removing merely a small section of metal after the greater part of the central portion of the blank has been forced into the sides to remain in the finished blank.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the claims or sacrificing any of its material advaw tages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. The process of constructing blanks for car Wheels and car Wheel tires and the like from an ingot portion having a central imperfection, which consists in flattening said ingot to concentrate said imperfection, and punching an aperture through said blank, said punching removing all imperfect metal.
2. The process of constructing blanks for car Wheels and car Wheel tires and the like from an ingot having an opening in its end and imperfect metal about said opening which consists in cutting oif said end, fiattening to close the openlng and concentrate said imperfect metal, and punching to re move said imperfect metal.
3. The process of constructing blanks for car Wheels and car Wheel tires and the like from an ingot having an opening in its end and imperfect metal about said opening Which consists in cutting off said end, simultaneously reducing the thickness of the end removed and concentrating the imperfect metal about its center and punching to form a central opening and remove said imperfect metal.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing W tnesses.
