Each of the pans 29 has a riffle 38 of arcur ate shape near the marginal edge thereof, said riflle having an inclined bottom which at one end merges with the surface of the pan and which at the other end communicates with a well 39 having a screw cap or phragms and pans as may be desired. From the lowermost pan the material passes through the opening 80 to the receptacle 33 from which the refuse will escape through the Spout 34, while the last remaining values are permitted to settle in the well 35, the values being readily removed from the several wells by removing the caps or closures thereof, While any values settling in the other convenient detachable closure L0. The shallow pan 24 may be removed from the riffies 38 may each extend through an arc of any desired degree. In the drawings the said riflies have been shown as extending through an arc of about 180 degrees, but the extent thereof may be varied as far as desired.
The wall member 25 which bounds the sieve at the top of the casing is provided with inwardly extending arms or brackets 41 supporting a deflector 42 which is arranged adjacent to and in spaced relation to the outlet 26, the purpose of said deflector being to partly obstruct the outlet, thereby preventing an excess of material from being discharged therethrough.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. The material from which gold is to be separated is placed in the sieve bounded by the wall 25, and is subjected to an inflow of water from any suitable source, while the casing 20 is being gyrated at a speed which may be controlled in any well known manner. It is obvious that the speed may be varied according to the nature of the material that is to be operated upon and other conditions. By the centrifugal'action thus set up, the large gravel or other particles in the sieve will be thrown in the direction of the wall 25 and expelled through the outlet 26. Some of the values will settle in the pan 24, while values that are not separated in this manner will pass through the sieve along with the relatively fine sand and gravel, being deposited on the cone-shaped diaphragm immediately beneath the sieve and permitted to overflow the edge of the latter on to the pan 29 directly below. As
material accumulates in this pan, the constant agitation to which it is subjected will tend to throw the values which constitute the heaviest portion in the direction of the ually accumulate in the riffie 38 over which they are carried to the well 39. The material which escapes from the uppermost pan 29 through the opening 30 at the center thereof drops upon the diaphragm 32 next below which it overflows, passing from thence to the next pan 29 where the operation is'repeated. As has been previouslystated, the cylindrical casing may contain as many diatop of the same. The improved machine is simple in construction, economical and eflicient in operation, and is capable of being operated either manually or by power derived from any suitable source.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:.
1. In a device of the class described, a
cylindrical casing, a sieve at the top of the pans arranged in alternate order below the sieve, each pan having an arcuate inclined riflie; a well with which the lower ends of the rifiles in the pans communicate, and a detachable bottom closure for said well.
3. In a device of the class described, a cylindrical casing, a sieve at the top of said casing, said sieve having acentrally disposed well, overflow diaphrams and separating pans arranged in alternate order below the sieve, said diaphragms and pans being substantially cone-shaped and the pans having central openings, each pan being provided near the marginal edge thereof with an arcuate riffle having a downwardly inclined bottom portion, and a well at the low rating pans arranged in alternate order below the sieve, said diaphragms and pans being substantially cone-shaped and the pans having central openings, each pan being provided near the marginal edge thereof with an arcuate riflie having a downwardly inclined bottom portion, and a well at the low end of such riflle, the lowermost pan having secured to the underside thereof a receptacle provided with an outlet spout at the margin thereof and with a centrally disposed well.
