ATTORNEY" GEORGE W. HIST, or HAVRE,:,1VIO1\TTANA.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RIsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Havre, in the county of Hill and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boilers, and moreparticularly to a boiler adapted to be used in connection with marine engines, and for similar purposes, where it is essential to reduce the loss of heat by radiationto a mini mum.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a boiler .of'the character stated of simple construction and operation in which the boiler proper is surrounded by a heat insulating medium which serves to effectually prevent loss of heat by radiation. A further object is to provide a boiler and a casing in spaced relation thereto in combination with a common supporting means for the casing and boiler. A further object is to provide a boiler and a casing so constructed as to permit ready access to the boiler for inspection, repairs and similar purposes. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal vertical section through a boiler constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a section through ing on line 22 of Fig. 1.
The boiler A consists of a plurality of telescopically connected cylindrical sections 1, 2 and 8. At each end of this boiler is secured rectangular or approximately L shape 1n cross section, being provided with an integral inwardly directed flange 5 which is riveted to the end section of the boiler A.
the outer cas- Intermediate the rings A are mounted two spaced rings 6 and 7. The ring 6 is provided, at its inner edge, with an integral flange disposed at a right angle to the body of the ring 8. This flange 8 extends between the inner end portion of the boiler section 1 and the outer end portion of the boiler SGC'. tion 2, the flange 8 and the end portions of these boiler sections being riveted tightly together so as to form a continuous fluid tight closure. The ring 7 is similarly secured between the outer end portions of the boiler sections and the inner end portion of the boiler section 3. The vertical flange Specification of Letters Patent.
a supporting ring 1 which is of of the ring 6 extends between the outwardly directed flanges 9 and 10 of the two cylindrical sections 11 and 12 of the cylindrical casing B. 'The'flanges 9 and 10 of the sections of the casing, and the vertical flange of ring'6, are all secured tightly together by meansof suitably spaced securing boltsflange of the end ring 4.- bymeans of suite ably spaced bolts 20, a packing ring or gasket 21 being interposed between these two flanges so as to form a fluid tight joint.
The vertical flange of the front'ring 4 is similarly secured to the flange 22 of the casing section 11, by means of suitably spaced bolts 23. By this means the boiler A is mounted within thecasing B in spaced relation thereto, and a' fluid tight closure isefiected at all joints, for the purposes to be later disclosed.
The section 17 of casing B is provided Patentedflct'. 2, 191 7..
App1icationfi1er1 November 8, 1916. Serial No. 130,193.
with an integral boss 24 having a central threaded aperture which receives a nipple 25. This nipple is connected by an elbow 26 to a pipe 27. By connecting the pipe 27 to a suitableexhaust pump the air in the space between the casing B and the boiler A may beexhausted so as to'form avacuum about the boiler. For this purpose the ver tical flanges oiithe supporting rings are each provided with a plurality of suitably spaced apertures 28. To prevent collapse of the casing B a plurality of suitably spaced radially disposed reinforcing members or blocks'29 are interposed between the boiler A and the casing. These blocks act to support the casing intermediate the rings thus sufliciently reinforcing the same to prevent its collapse when the air within the casing is exhausted, and are made of asbestos, magnesia, or other heat-insulating material.
As is well known, a vacuum is one of the best of heat insulators. By surrounding the .minimum, thus effecting a material saving in the cost of fuel consumed to produce a given amount of power, and producing a boiler of simple construction and high efliciency. Then it is desired to repair the boiler, the casing B may be removed by the simple expedient of removing the securing bolts which secure the sections of the casing to the supporting rings. This provides simple means whereby the boiler may be quickly and easily inspected or repaired.
The casing 13 is further provided with an integral boss 30. A nipple 31 is threaded into this boss and communicates with an outwardly opening escape valve 32. This valve is provided to prevent explosion of the casing B in the event of the boiler springing a leak. In this case the steam which would ordinarily collect within the casing B so as to cause explosion of the same will act to open the valve 32 and escape through the same into the atmosphere In this manner the valve acts as a safety device and also as a visual signal or indicator to give warning of a leak in the boiler A.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, each of the sections of the boiler casing is formed of two members of semi-cylindrical shape, each of these members being provided at its edge with an integral outwardly directed longitudinally extending flange. The flanges of the upper one of these members hit on the flanges of the lower member, the two members being then detachably secured together by bolts passed through alined apertures in the flanges, suitable securing nuts being threaded on these bolts. To insure a fluid tight closure bea tween the members of each section, a suitable packing member is interposed between the securing flanges, as shown, this packing member corresponding to the gaskets secured between the flanges at the ends of the sections of the casing and the supporting rings. By this construction, the casing can 1,2a1,sse
and a casing mounted about the boiler in spaced relation thereto composed of a plurality of sections, each of said sections being provided at each end with an outwardly directed integral flange, said flanges being secured to the vertical arms of the said rings. I
2. The combination of a boiler composed of a plurality of telescopically connected sections, a plurality of rings mounted about the boiler concentric therewith, said rings being of approximately L-shape in cross sec-- tion, and certain of said rings having their inner arms secured between the overlapping ends of adjacent sections or" the boiler, certain others of said rings having their inner arms secured to the end sections of the boiler, a casing composed of a plurality of sections mounted about the boiler in'spaced relation thereto, each of said sections being provided at each end with an outwardly di rected integral flange and means for detachably securing the sections of the casing to the vertical arms of the said supporting rings.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. RIST.
