Be it known that I, ROBERT KANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at-I-Iumboldt,'in the county of Coles and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to improvements in gearing, more particularly to the gearlng mechanism for actuating the dasher portions 1 of churns and the like, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
- Anotherobjectof the invention is to provide a. mechanism which may be applied without material structural change to churn dasher devices of various forms and likewise to cream receptacles of various sizes and forms.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device whereby the requisite speed is accomplished by a mechanism which is actuated at a relatively slow speed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device including a casing having upper and lower members provided with vertically alined shaft bearings and supporting a plurality of shafts which carry the operating gears, the casin members operating to maintain the sha ts in position and prevent the disengagement of the gears.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the improved device;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a plan view with the cover or closure of the casing for the operating mechanism removed;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the coupling member between the dasher rods and the operating mechanism.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device includes a supporting member, indicated as a whole at 10, and
which is preferably the cover or top of the cream receptacle, the latter being indicated at ll. Thereceptacle 1:1 and the top 10 may be of any required form or size and it is not desired, therefore, to limit the invention in this respect. Disposed upon thebottom of the-receptacle 11 are steps 12 to receive the lower ends 13 of dasher rods 14,
the latter being disposed in parallel'relation and provided with suitable blades 15 which aredisposed at right angles to thedasher rods and coact whenthe-dasher rods are rotated to produce the churning action. The blades or paddles 15 are arranged in alternatingrelation relative to each other, and when the dasher rods are rotated the blades of one rod will move between the blades of the other, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Disposed above the closure portion 10 is a casing represented as a whole at 16 and supported by suitable legs 17 from the member 10. The casing 16 isthus'permanently connected to the member 10, and spaced above the same, as shown. The casing 10 is provided with a closure 18 secured thereto in any suitable manner, for lnstance by clamp bolts 19. Mounted for rotation through the bottom and top of the casing is a main drive shaft 20 which extends through a sleeve 21 on the cover 18 of the casing and adapted to receive an operating crank 22 at its upper end. and externally of the casing. Mounted to rotate with the shaft 20 within the casing is a relatively large gear 23 which engages with a pinion 24: upon another shaft 25 mounted for rotation in the casing and its cover. Mounted upon the shaft 25 within the casing is another gear wheel 26. Mounted for rotation in the bottom of the casing 16 and likewise in its cover 18 are shafts 2728, and mounted upon these latter shafts are pinions 2930. At their lower ends the shafts 27-28 are enlarged, as shown, the enlarged portions depending below the bottom of the casing or between the casing and the base member 10. The enlarged portions 31-32 are provided with sockets to receive the upper ends of the dashcr rods 14, and are held in position by set screws 3334. The shafts 27--28 are provided respectively with flanges 3536, which bear upon the inner face of the bottom of the casing 16, and thus prevent the downward displacement of the shafts. It will thus be obvious that when the parts are assembled, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and rotary motion imparted to the shaft 20 by power applied to the crank 22, the dasher'rods 14 will be very rapidly rotated by a relatively slow speed applied to the crank.
