CONCRETE-INSERT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented oet. 2, 1917.-
Applieation filed March 2, 1915. Serial No. 11,831.
T0 all 'whom t may Concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHoNz ELTONr DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Concrete-Insert, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to concrete inserts, which are a type of socket or hanger designed to be embedded in con` crete ceilings, walls, or similar constructions, during their construction, so that at any time after the construction is completed, brackets, hangers, pipes, or any other desired construction may be supported by such concrete inserts, without injury to the concrete construction. y
With the above in view, my invention consists of a concrete linsert. of the character stated, and wherein provision is made for preventing the disarrangement of the concrete insert with respect to the concrete, and wherein means yare provided for covering the lower end of the threaded aperture, which is adapted to receive a fastening device.
It further consists of a novel insert provided with anchoring devices, and having its body portion provided with upwardly directed 'strengthening ribs and with a chamber or recess located above the threaded portion of the aperture, so that the breaking of the taps, used to cut the thread in the aperture, is practically eliminated, due to the provision of such chamber.
It further consists of a novel construction of an insert having a threaded aperture therein, and novel means for closing the outer end of such aperture, to-prevent accumulation of foreign material therein and the rusting and disintegration of the threads.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter moi'e clearly appear in the detailed description.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown herein a typical embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although, of course, it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities, as herein `shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation, partly in section, of a concrete insert ernbodying my invention, and the concrete construction in which it is placed.
Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of the concrete insert, showing, in addition, the manner in which it is connected, with a temporary support.
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of i the insert in detached position.
Fig. 4 represents a bottomplan view.`
Fig. 5 represents a perspective viewof a closure employed inconjunction with the insert. n
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring tothe drawings.-
1 designates the body portion of a concrete insert embodying my invention, and in the present instance, `the upper, portion thereof is shown as having la substantially cylindrical contour, while the lower portion 2 is of reduced diameter and provided with reinforcing ribs 3, which may have any de. sired formation and extend in any desiredr direction, but for purposes of illustration, I have preferred to show them as being upwardly directed from the .angularly arranged base or foot members or flanges 4, and any desired number of these base flanges may be provided with the recesses or notches 5, which are illustratedas being substantially V-shaped. The purpose of these recesses 5 is toprovide for securing the insert in position on a temporary support4 or centering 6, (see Fig. 2), by meansY of fastening devices 7. 8 designates an aperture extending into the body portion' of the insert, which is interiorly threaded, and opens into an enlarged innerchamber 9 of greater diameter than the aperture 8, so that when the threads are being tapped, the provision of the chamber 9 will eliminate, in a large measure, the breakingof the taps, which would otherwise take place if the chamber 9 were omitted. The bottom or end wall of the insert is recessed at an acute angle, as at 10, so that a polygonal shaped recess is formed to receive a polygonal shaped closure 111 having the inclined outer wall 12, so that said'closure will fit such recess, as seen in Fig. 1, and close the outer end of the aperture 8.y Inorder ton'provide for the insertion and removal of the closure 11, one of the foot flanges 4 is provided bars or deformed rods .of any: vdesired or with aninclined face 13, (see Figs. 1 and 4)..
Certain of the foot anges L are connected i at their innerlends bya rWeb 1e, Whiehis removed in-proximity to the foot flange i Which has the upwardly inclined Wall .'13, in order to provide forthe ready insertio or i removal of the ,closure `-11.
