2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
#fnf-Ton By L? TTaR/vfr lock can be reversed by interchanging the cylinder and hub plate 32 in the respective openings. When these parts are interchanged, the thumb turn hub 31 will be locat'edat the back of the case, the cylinder lock being mounted on the cap plate in .this
instance; and the hub 31 will coperate with ,an operating projection 29a formed on the back side of tumbler 22. rlhis projection 29a is similar to the projection 29 and in line therewith, the rollback-engaging portion of the tumbler being located between the two projections.
By the construction described, the dead bolt may be very readily and reliably operated by the thumb knob. As the hub 31 straddles one of the tumbler projections when the parts are assembled and cannot move out oi'' operative relation thereto, the
construction is very simple and eflicient, and yet it permits ready reversal to change the hand of the lock. The hub-carrying plate 32 overhangs the opening 34 at the inside, as shown at 36, so that only one fastening screw 33 is necessary for securing the plate removably inthe ordinary cylinder lock opening. The movement of the hub is limited to a 'quarter-turn by shoulders 37 on the plate.
The latch bolt 12 can be retracted by the rollback 19 through a slide member 38 mounted on the dead bolt and actuating a retracting lever 39. The lever 39 is pivoted on the post 23, which serves to guide the tumbler 22, and the'lower end of lever 39 is adapted to engage the cross-head 16 to retract the latch bolt. In. doing this, the slide 38 is depressed by the rollback 19 and a pin 39? on said slide engages the upper arm of lever 39 and depresses the same to effect the retraction of the bolt as shown in Fig. 2. The latch bolt actuating slide 38 is guided vertically on the dead bolt, alongside but in advance of the sliding tumbler 22. It has Va guideway 40 in the dead bolt, and, at one side of the guideway40 and in thehead ofthebolt Vis a socket 4l in which a plunger 42 on the slide 38 is guided. Between the bottom of plunger 42 andthe bottom ci the socket 41, is a coil spring 43 which normally holds the slide 38 in .the elevated position shown in Fig. 1. When the parts are in this position, the head of the plunger portion 42 of the slide is close to and in the path of the rollback 1.9,
.so-that when the later is turned in a counter- It willbe observed that both the slidingA tumbler and the sliding latch-actuating member are mounted in guides just beneath I the cap plate of the case where they are very readily accessible, and that the parts.y are simple so that they can be readily manufactured and assembled.
`The cylinder lock lrollback 19 and the thumb turn hub or rollback 31 are vsubstantially in line with each other, which simpliiesv the construction of the lock and permits its ready reversal.
lhile I have described ymy invention as being particularly applicable to a vlock with a narrow backset, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of the construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
What l claim is,
l. In a lock, a case, a latch bolt'therein, a dead bolt in the case above thelatch' bolt,
a slide mounted in said dead bolt to move up and down, a pivot pin mounted on the bolt, a lever pivoted on said pivot pin and operated by said slide to retract the latch'bolt, a cylinder lock mechanismto actuate said slide, a fence for the dead bolt, and a vertically sliding tumbler on the dead bolt to coperate with said fence guided o-n said pivot pin.
2. In a lock, a casing, a dead bolt above the latch bolt, having la socket at the upper part thereof, a plunger in said socket, having a downward eX- tension guided in a groove on the outer face `of the dead bolt, a spring interposed between said plungery and the bottom of the socket in the dead bolt, a cylinder lock-having arollback adapted tor engage and de` a latch bolt therein,
ice
press said plunger, and retracting mecha!` msm for said latch bolt, operatively connected with the lower part of said plunger eX- tension. j
3. In a lock, a case, a dead bolt therein, a fence on the case below said dead bolt, a vertically sliding'tumbler guided on said bolt, talons on the bolt at opposite sides `of said tumbler, a cylinder lock to operate. said bolt by coperation with said tumbler and said talons, andv a thumb turn hub atvthe side of the case opposite said cylinder lock, constructed to straddle said tumbler and to operate said bolt thereby independently of said talons. l
4. In 'a lock, a fence onthe case below said dead bolt, a vertically sliding ,tumblerA guided on said bolt, talons onthe bolt at opposite sides of said tumbler, a cylinder lock tov operate said i boltby coperation with said tumbler and `said talons, and a thumb turn hub at the to coperate with the lower portion of said tumbler, a cylinder lock at one side of the case, having a rollback to coperate with said tumbler and said talons, a thumb turn hub at the opposite side of the case straddling the top of said tumbler, a post on said dead bolt on which said tumbler is guided by a slot in the latter, a latch retracting lever pivoted on said post, and means for operating said lever from said rollback.
6. In a lock, a case, a latch bolt therein,
`*a dead bolt in said case above the latch bolt, having talons at the upper part thereof, a
yvertically sliding tumbler on said bolt between said talons, a fence beneath said bolt to coperate with the lower portion of said tumbler, a cylinder lock at one side of the case, having aY rollback to eoperate with said tumbler and said talons, a thumb turn hub at the opposite side ofthe ease straddling the top of said tumbler, a post on said Copies of this patent may be obtained for dead bolt 011 which said tumbler is guided by a slot in the latter, a latch retracting lever pivoted on said post, and means for operating said lever from said rollback, said cylinder lock and thumb turn hub being interchangeable to reverse the hand of the lock.
7. In a look, a case, a dead bolt therein, having talons at the upper part thereof, a vertically sliding tumbler guided on said bolt between said talons, a fence in the case to coperate with said tumbler, a cylinder lock at one side of the ease having a rollback to engage said talons and the top of said tumbler between said talons, a projection at the upper part of said tumbler lying in a plane parallel to that of said talons, and a thumb turn hub straddling said projection.
8. In a lock, a ease, a dead bolt therein, having talons at the upper part thereof, a vertically sliding tumbler guided on said bolt between said talons, a fence in the case to cooperate with Said tumbler, a cylinder lock at one sidel of the ease having a rollback to engage said talons and the top of said tumbler between said talons, a projection at the upper part of said tumbler lying in a plane parallel to that of said talons, a thumb tum hub straddling said projection, a carrying member for said thumb turn hub, said cylinder lock and carrying member being interchangeable for reversing the hand of the lock, and a second projection on the upper part of the tumbler to engage Said thumb turn hub when the lock is reversed.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand on the 24th day of March, 1917.
