WILLIAM H. PRITCI'IETT, 0F THE UNITED :STATES MARINE CORPS.
j SHOWER-BATH FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
`Patented Oct. 2,1917.
Application tiled July 17, 1917. Serial No. 181,132.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PmToHErrT, ofthe United States Marine Corps, a citizen of the United States, stationed at Sanchez, in the Dominican Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Lin Shower-Bath Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such `as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to improvements in shower bath fixtures adapted for use in bath houses, private bath rooms, or the like, where there is fixed pipe for supply# ing water already located; and it consists in certain novel features, as 4will be 'hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 shows the attachment connected to the city water main;
Fig. 2 shows a central vertical section through the shower bath fixture, part of the stem being shown in elevation;
Fig. 3 shows a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, 'and looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 shows a central vertical section of the cup, which forms a valve seat for the stem; and
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the stem in elevation.
1 represents the water main controlled by any suitable valve 2, from which project one or more water pipes 3, which preferably project downward as at 4, and to which downward projections the cap 5 is connected as by the screw threads 6. This cap is also provided with internal screw threads 7 to engage corresponding threads on the cup 8, which is provided with an annular recess 9 connected by the ports 10 formed in the wall 11 to the valve chamber 12, which is preferably tapered, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to receive the plug or stem 13, which plug or stem has one or more ports 14 adapted to register with the ports 10 when the stem is turned in the proper direction.
For convenience in assembly, the top of the stem 15 is made angular, as shown. The bottom of the stem is provided with screw threads 16 to engage corresponding screw threads 17 in the neck 18 of the shower-head 19, whose bottom is provided with a plate 20, perforated as at 21.
In assembling the parts, ythe plug or stem 13 is inserted in the valve chamber of the cup 8, and `by holding on to thehead `15 with a wrench, the shower-head 19 is screwed tight on the stem, the cup is then screwed into the cap 5, and the cap is screwed into the pipe 4. Water may 'be kept permanently supplied to the pipe 4 by #the main valve2; and when the bather desires to turn on the shower, he reaches upand turns the showerhead 19, and with `it the stem l13, until the ports 14 register with the ports 10. It will be seen that Vthe stein may be turned soasito either partly or wholly open the ports 14, and thus the supply of water to the showerluad may be regulated at `will `by simply turning the shower-head. l
The shower-head is preferably located at any couvenient'height somewhere above the `head of the bather, but within easy reach of his arms.
`For use in a large bath house, a single trolled by a single valve 2, while each indi-` vidual shower may be controlled by turning the showerhead, and thus opening and closing the ports 14. By this arrangement the pressure of the water on the stem tends to keep the stem closed, and the conical shape of the stem and its chamber will tend to cause the valves to wear uniformly, thus automatically securing a tight joint.
While I have shown two ports 10 in the wall 1l of the cup 8, and two ports 14 in the hollow stem 13, it will be obvious that a single port in each may be used, or more than two ports may be used, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a shower bath apparatus, the combination with a water main and a water pipe connected thereto, of a hollow cap connected to said pipe, a cup secured to said cap and provided with a tapered central chamber and an annular recess therein, with one or more ports connecting said annular recess with said central chamber, a tapered hollow plug rotatably mounted in said central chamber, and provided with one or more ports adapted to register with the ports in said cup, and a shower-head attached to said plug and adapted to rotate said stem when turning pressure is ap plied thereto, substantially as described.
2. In a shower bath apparatus, the combination with a water main and a water pipe connected. thereto, of a hollow cap screwed to said pipe, a cup screwed to said cap and provided with a tapered central chamber and an annular recess therein, with one or more ports connecting said annular recess with said central chamber, a tapered hollow plug rotatably mounted in said cen-- tral chamber, and provided with one or more ports adapted to register with the ports in said cup, said nlug projecting beyond said cup and being provided with screw threads on its projecting portion, and
agshower head screwed tight to said plugl and adapted to rotate said stem when turning pressure is applied thereto, substantially as described.
l3. A shower bath attachment adapted to be connected to a fixed water pipe comprising a hollow cap connected to said pipe, a cup secured to said cap and provided with a tapered central chamber and an annular recess therein, with one or more ports connecting said annular recess with said central chamber, a tapered hollow plug `rotatably Copies of this patent may be obtained for mounted in said central chamber, and provided with one or more ports: adapted to register with the ports in saidv cup, and a shower-head attached to said plug and adapted to rotate said stem when turning pressure is applied thereto, substantially as described.
4. A shower bath attachment adapted to be connected to a fixed water pipe comprising a hollow cap screwed to said pipe, a cup screwed to said cap, and provided with a tapered central chamber and an annular recess therein, with one or more ports connecting said annular recess with said cen-k tral chamber, a tapered hollow plug rotatably mounted in said central chamber, and provided with one or more ports adapted to register with the ports in said cup, said plug projecting beyond said cup and being provided with screw threads on its projecting portion, and a shower-head screwed tight to said plug and adapted to rotate said stem when turning pressure is applied thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aliX my signature.
