UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD M. KRELL AND MICHAEL ZUCKEBMAH, OF NEW YORK, I. Y.
FELLING DEVICE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1917.
Application filed April 10, 1917. Serial H0. 180,940.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, BERNARD M. KRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city in the county of Bronx and State of New York, and MICHAEL Zoom-n- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fell ing Devices for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a feller for sewing machines and has for its principal object to provide a feller for making curved lap seams which curve either to the right or to the left as the seam passes through the machine.
Another object-is to provide an easily adjustable feller for sewing on difl'erent kinds and thicknesses of material.
These and other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In order to accomplish these objects we have provided a feller comprising a base piece, a scroll plate of novel construction and relation; and while herein we have described minute details of construction, the invention is not limited to these since the details of constructionand combination may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, showing by way of example one of many possible embodiments of the invention,
Figure 1 is a plan of the feller;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation; Y r
Fig. 3 is a Ian of the base piece;
Fig. 4 is a eft-hand end view of the base piece;
Fig. 5 isa planofthe scroll plate;
Fig. 6 is a right hand end elevation of the scroll plate;
Fig. 7 is plate; 7
Fig". 8 is a plan of the feller showing by dotted lines material during the formation of a fell curved to the right; 7
Fig. 9 is a similar view showing the fell curved to the left; and I Fig. 10 is an inverted rear elevation showa front elevation of the scroll ing the interrelation of and the feller parts.
The feller herein selected to illustrate our the two fell parts invention consists of a base piece 10 and a justed the positioning lug lfistamped froln the scroll plate 11.
The scroll plate is provided with a pair of elongated slots 17 through which pm screws 18 into the threaded openings 19 of the bracket face 14,- whereby the scroll plate may be held in adjusted position, with or without the lug 16 against the edge 15, as d The left hand end portion 20 of the scroll plate is bent downwardly as at 21, inwardly as at 22, again downwardly as at 23, and
outwardly as at 24, thus forlmng an S- shapedscroll, the portion 24 further continued, upwardly as at .25 and en further to the C-shaped scroll extension.
The left hand edge portion of the bracket face 14 is continued in mover-hanging lip 27 disposed above an inwardly curved face 28 merging gradually into the base plate 29 of the base piece 10.
The downwardlyand inwardly bent por tions 21 and 22 of the scroll plate cooperate with the outwardly tions 24 and 25 and the rightwardly bent portion 26 to form an upper C-shaped folding and guiding slot 30. Similarly the portions 22, 23, and 24 cooperate with the curved face 28 and the adjacent portion of the base plate 29 to form a lower folding and guiding slot 31'si1nilar' to the slot 30 but disposed in the reverse direction, a branchof one slot being received between the two branches of the other slot.
and upwardly bent por-' right as at 26, thus forming a By reference to Fig. 5 it will be noted that portions 21, 22, and 23 are cut away at the edge 32 and, therefore, extend in the direction of the feed of the cloth, only about half the distance of the portion 25.
The left hand portion 20 of the scroll plate is continued rearwardly into a slightly downwardly inclined tongue 34. The portion 24 is continued rearwardly in finger 35; while the face 28 and the base plate 29 are continued rearwardly in a curved extension 36. The tongue 34, the finger 35 and the extension 36 terminate at about the same distance to the rear of the feller; and the needle or needles of the machine are disposed to the rear thereof.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The lower section or piece 38 of the work is put upon the base plate 29 and the edge portion thereof moved into the curved lower slot 31 until the edge is substantially in contact with the downwardly bent portion 21. The upper work-piece 39 is placed upon the scroll plate and the edge portion thereof disposed in the C-shaped slot 30 with the edge substantially in contact with. the downwardly bent portion 23. The pieces 38 and 39 are then passed through the machine and stitched.
It will be noted that an imaglnary at line passed through the edge 32 of the downwardly extending portion 23 and the rear edge 40 of the curved face 28 is inclined considerably to the right relative to the normal direction of feed. This permits the edge of the upper work piece 39 to be inclined to the right whereby the work pieces may be moved through the fellerin a rightwardly inclined direction and a rightwardly curved fell 42, as in Fig. 8, produced.
In like manner it will be observed than an imaginary line 3 passed through the rear edge 32 of the downwardly bent ortion 21 and the rear edge 44 of the u war 1y bent portion 25 is inclined to the le permitting the edge of tlm lower work piece 38 to be inclined to the left, whereby a leftwardly curved fell 45, as shown in Fig. 9 may be produced.
It is noted that the curved fells can be produced only when the edges of the material are curved, and that the cut-away portions permit the curved edges to assume the proper position. I
The openings 17 are large enough to permit both longitudinal and angular adjustment of the scroll plate. Both the rightwardly and leftwardly curved fells may be made without adj ustin the scroll plate, but if it be desired to ma e the fell more pronounoedly curved in either direction, the scroll plate is adjusted to incline in that direction, the lug 16 preventing inclination to the right su cient to close the guiding slots 30 and 31. Because of the shape of the curve of the edge 27, it is impossible to close the guiding slots by inclining the scroll plate to the left.
By adjusting the scroll plate longitudinally, the width of the'lower guiding slot 31 is varied, whereby different thicknesses of the material of the lower work piece 38 are accommodated. Different thicknesses of the upper work piece 39 may be accommodated without any adjustment of the upper guide slot 30.
