To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY G. LUIS, a

, citizen of the United States, residing at San Quentin, inthe county of Mann and State of- California, have invented certamnew and useful Improvements in Combined Man-' dolins and Guitars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Thisinvention relates to certain improvemerits in combined mandolin and guitar and it is an Object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a singing tone is created.

I The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my 11nproved musical instrument whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise-more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be heremafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention Wlll hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention maybe the better understood I will now proceed to de scribethe same with reference to the accompanying drawings-wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a musical instrument constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

As disclosed in Figs. 1 to 7 of the accompanying drawings, B denotes the body of the instrument which may be of any-suitable design but preferably of the configuration illustrated in Fig. 1,and in producing the body I find it of especial importance to have the back board 1 of maple, the-sides or bands-2 of eucalyptus and the face board 8 of white sugar pine with the grain transversely disposed. I have found by actual practice that white sugar pine results in an unusually sweet tone. structed with the combination of woods just recited it has beenfully demonstrated that a powerful sound may be created which,

when close to the instrument, is soft but loud at a distance. I

The upper portion of the body B adjacent the opposite sides thereof is provided with the scrolls 1 which afford echo chambers to increase the sounds while the lower portion of the body B adjacent one side is provided with the additional scroll 5 also affording an echo chamber.

At substantially its transverse center the body B has suitably secured to its upper end portion the neck 6 to the outer end portion of which is suitably secured the head 7 pro vided with a lateral extension 8 which serves as a sub-base head. The extension or head 8 is also suitably connected with the outer end portion of the neck 9 suitably secured to the upper portion of the body B at one side of the neck 6. The body B has also secured to its upper end portion at the opposite side of the neck 6 the guitar neck 10 to the outer end portion of which is secured the head 11. Interposed between the heads 7 and His a bracing member 12' herein disclosed as'comprising two threaded members having coacting therewith a conventional type ofturn buckle. 3. A- combined mandolin and guitar comprising a hollow body having a plurality of sound openings arranged in its face, bridges attached to the body, necks extending from the end of the body opposite that to which the bridges are connected, a head connecting one pair of necks, a head on the opposite neck, a turn-buckle conopening and a horn at the end of the sound tube.
