LIGHTING SYSTEM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT EDWARD TWIDDY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 16 London road, SevenOaks, in the county of Kent, England, and JOHN STALLY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at l Quarry Cottage, Tubs Hill, Seven-Oaks, in the county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Improved Lighting Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved method of and means for the production of light from high tension magneto machines used for ignition purposes in internal combustion engines of motor cycles and other motor road vehicles, and is particularly useful for supplying current for a rear or a hand lamp of such vehicles.
The present invention comprises essentially the introduction of a suitable resistance, such as a choking or impedance coil, together with an incandescent electric lamppreferably a metallic filament lampbetween the primary winding of the magneto and the means employed to earth one end of said winding. The purpose of the coil is to cause the amperage to lag a given distance behind the voltage so as to insure no fluctuation beyond the ordinary limits under all frequencies generated by the magneto.

with end closing plates 0 each of which carries an insulated terminal screw 0 0 The one end a of the wire coil a is attached to one of the end terminals 0 and the other end a of the wire coil is attached to the opposite terminal 0 The coil a is held in position within the casing c and properly insulated by filling up the casing with wax or other suitable insulating compound y. The one terminal 0 of the coil a is connected to the terminal al which is in connection with the primary winding of the magneto. The other terminal 0 is connected to one of the terminals of the lamp ewhich is preferably of the metallic filament typethe other terminal of which is earthed at f. A switch 9 may be inserted in the circuit at any convenient place between the coil a and earth whereby the lamp may be put into and out of action.
In a modification the lamp 6, provided with a suitable lens and reflector, may be attached to or made as a part of the casing 0, preferably at one end thereof.
We have found by experiment that with a one or two cylinder engine for a motor cycle employing a Bosch magneto for ignition purposes and using a metallic filament lamp of 3.5 volts a coil constructed as follows gives excellent results. The iron core having a length of about 4: to 5 inches and a diameter of 5/16 of an inch is wound with approximately 517 coils of double cotton covered copper wire of 24 S. W. Gr. and efficiently insulated between the windings.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In apparatus for the production of light from high tension magneto machines used for ignition purposes, the combination of a high-tension magneto machine having primary and secondary circuits, an interrupter in the primary circuit, a lamp circuit shunted around the interrupter and a reactor in series in the lamp circuit.
