UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT SCHMIDT, OI FLINT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T0 CHAMPION IGNITION COMIPKN Y,
I O1. FLINT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
SPARK-PLUG.
I Specification of Letters Eatent.
Application filed March 8, 1817. Serial No. 153,283.
To all whom it may concern.
. Be it known that I, ALBERT SCHMIDT, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Plugs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to spark-plugs and has for its primary object the obtaining of a construction in which the electrode maybe detached and replaced without destroying; the gas seal. It is a further object to avoid the necessity of an enlarged head at the inner end of the electrode, so that the heat of combustion will be dissipated through an in creasing rather than a diminishing crosssection. I
in the drawings:
Figure l is a longitudinal section a lur; embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing: fied' construction.
A is the metallic casino. Within t is cas= in two mg is secured an insulator l sections B and C, lOGQWGGll which is placed a metallic head D. An insulator of other suitable material is placed about the joint between the inner outer insul t B and G, and all of the insulators are retained in the casing A by flange change ment or other suitable gas-sealing means.
The metallic head 1') between the ulstors B and O is internally threaded, an adapted to receive a correspondingly thrc ed portion G of theelectrode lid, is provided with an inwardly-extending tion I of lesser cross-section, whici passes through an aperture in inst B, and outside of the outer insulator C electrode is threaded at d engagement with a clamping and sealing nut The rangement is such that the electrode may be inserted from outside of the plugs; so curely clamped thereto, and also at any may be removed and replaced.
In the construction shown in d, the enlarged shank portion of the electrode e2:-=
tends beyond the threaded head l) and sin gages a recess in the inner insulatdr "in the construction shown in l the enlo ed shank terminates with the threaded "portion which engages the head D, and an extending portion of smaller cross-section The latter passes through the insulator B. Both constructions permit of readily inserting and withdrawing the electrode, and in each case the heat which is communicated to the exposed end is readily dissipated through the larger cross-section of the shank.
What I claim as my invention is 1. in a spark plug, the combination with an insulator, of an electrode insertible through said insulator from the outer end thereof, said electrode being of a diminish ing cross-section from its outer to its inner end, means protected by said insulator engageable with said electrode during insertion and anchoring the latter i'rom outward movement, and coiiperating means at the outer end of said electrode for clamping; the same to said insulator.
2. in a spark plug, the combination oi? an insulator formed outer and inner sections provided with a recess therebetween, an insulator wrappin "bridging the joint between said sections, a casi' in which said sections are mounted retained in fixed relation to each other, an electrode insertible through said l'flSllldbO the outer end thereof, and means in the recess between said engging said electrode 6' J n to anc or the same irons outward rnov sent 8. n electrons formed in outer inner tions having recess therebetween, an in snlator wra'poing for bridging the joint besaid sections, a casing in which said sections mounted and held in fixed relation each other, a threaded member in the recess between sections, an electrode insertibl through said sections from the outer end thereof and threaded "for engagement with said threaded member W spark plug", the combination an ins formed in outer and inner sec= trons, insulator wrapping bridging the 1 joint between said sections, a casing? in which said tions are mounted and held in lined relation to each other, an internally-threaded member located between said sections, and an electrode insertible through said sections having a threaded portion for engaging? with 7 said threaded member, and an inwardynrojecting exposed portion of lesser section,
5. in a spark plug, the combination. with an insulator, of an electrode insertible through said insulator from the outer end a "plug, the'combination of an till thereof, said electrode and insulator having a shouldered engagement, and means for resections in fixed relation to each other, an
electrode insertible through said insulator sections from the outer end thereof, and having an inclined shoulder for cooperating with the first mentioned shoulder, and means in therecess between said outer and inner sections engageable with saidelectrode dur- 15 ing insertion and anchoring the same from outward movement.
7. Ina spark'filug, the combination with I an insulator member, of an eleetrodeinsertible through said insulator member frorn'the $0 outer end thereof, and an anchor member for said electrode, said insulator having a shouldered/engagement with one of said members.
- Intestainony whereof I afiix my id eture. 26
