Application filed January 10,
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that I, AL-AJOS Pnos'rnnDNY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at dohnstown in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manually- Gperable Rocking-Chairs, of-which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in manually operable rocking chairs.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a motor means for rocking chairs whereby the occupant thereof may perform the rocking operation without any engagement" of'thefeetwith the floor the rapidity of motion being easily regulated and the device being adapted for being fold ed out of the way when not desired foruse.
A further object of the. invention is the provision of means for rocking a chair which may lee-attached to rocking chairs now in use or manufactured with the same while the structure thereof is easy and inexpensive to make although possessing great strength and serviceability.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair provided with the present device, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the auxiliary floor engaging portion of the device detached.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the platform portion of the device detached.
F ig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the mounting plates employed.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of an end portion of the foot board, and,
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line VIVI of Fig. 1.
The present invention is herein illustrated in connection with a rocking chair 1O having the usual oppositely-arranged curved rockers 11 by means of which the chair is,
positioned upon the floor 12, the chair hav- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing the .usualseat 13, side arms 14, and back 15 while it will be understood that. the de- 18 adjacent the rear ends thereof while the auxiliary rockers substantially conform to the curvature of the main rockers 11 and terminate slightly rearwardly of the forward ends of the main rockers. A spider form of brace 19 is arranged for connecting together the auxiliary rocker 17.
Mounting plates 20 are secured inwardly 1 of the rockers 11 to blocks or extensions 21 carried by the rockers 11 and the 'frontlegs 22 of the chair, while any other convenient means .for mounting the plates 20 may be provided if desired. I
An angular rocking lever 23 is pivoted as at 24to each ofthe plates 20 having pivotal connection with the forward end of the adjacently positioned rocker 17 by means of a link 25'while stops inthe' form of posts 26 j and 27 are provided upon each plate 20 for limiting the up and down movement respectively, of the forwardly projecting operating end 28 of the adjacent rocking lever. Tension springs 29 are arranged between the upper pivot pins 30 of, the links 25 and the frame 31 0f the chair bottom 13 for normally maintaining the lever ends 28 against the stops 26 with the auxiliary rockers 17 in the same plane as the chair rockers 11.
A platform 32 is hingedly arranged between the forward ends of the rockers 11, the said platform normally extending forwardly of the chair supported at a suitable angle with respect to the floor 12 by means of books 33 carried by the platform and adapted to engage pins 34 upon the forward legs 22. Arms 35 are pivoted to the forward corners of the platform 32 having a foot board 36 hingedly mounted to the free ends of the said arms. Flexible connectors 37 connect the lower inner side of the foot board 36 as at 38 with the upper free ends 39 of the aforementioned levers 23.
From this detailed description of the device it will be understood that a person seated within the chair 1.0 places his feet upon the platform 32 and when it is desired to rock the chair 10, the person engages his feet with the foot board 36 pivotally swinging the said board, thereby moving the le vcrs 23 and auxiliary rockers 17 through the agency of the connectors 37. The forcible engagement of the auxiliary rockers 17 with the floor 12 acts as a lever in elevating the forward ends of the chair rockers and chair,
arms and foot board 36 may be folded upon the platform 32 and the latter swung upwardly between the chair legs 22 in closed position when it is not desired to operate the device, it being understood that'the springs 29 retain the remaining elements inoperative. v
I What I claim as new is:
1. A rocking means comprising in combination with a chair having curvedmounting rockers, auxiliary rockers pivoted at their rear ends to the inner faces of said chair rockers, 'mounting plates carried by the chair adjacent the forward ends of said auxiliary rockers, angular levers pivoted to the said plates, pivotal link connections between the said levers and the forward ends of the auxiliary rockers, movement limiting stop pins for the said levers carried by the 'copies of this patent may be obtained for said plates, normally positioning return springs for the said auxiliary rockers, an
the said plates, pivotallink connections between the said' levers'andthe forward ends of the auxiliary rockers, movement limiting stop pins for the said levers carried by the said plates, normally positioning return springs for the said auxiliary rockers, a platform hingedly mounted forwardly of the chair adjacent the forward ends of the chair rockers, supporting hooks pivoted to the platform and having detachable connection with the chair, swinging arms carried by the forward end of the platform, a foot board pivotedbetween the free'ends of the said arms, and flexible connections between the lower edge ofthe board and'the upper free ends of said levers, the boards, arm and platform being adapted for folding relation beneath the chair when not in use.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
