MULTIBLADED KNIFE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed November 24, 1916. Serial No. 133,179.
To all whom t may Concern:
.Be it known that I, AUGUST P. CLoT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at WIeehawken I-Ieights, in the county of I-Iudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multibladed Knives, of which the follqwing is a specification.
The present invention relates to cutlery and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in multi-bladed thread cutting implements, the device having for its primary object the provision of a multibladed cutter in `which the blades are capable each of independent relative adjustment so as to cut along different lines.
Another object of my inventionis to p'rovide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, compact, strong and durable and effective in operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is applicable for use in connection with the making of embroidered goods, it being the common practice with the present machines to leave two short lenghts of thread extending between the various designs, it being necessary t0 cut these threads after the design is completed. My invention contemplates the provision of a multi-bladed knife capable for use in this connection, leaving only one length of thread if so required whereby tlie threads mentioned being longer may be quickly and accurately severed.
Other objects of my invention not hereinbefore set forth will appear from the following detailed description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a multibladed knife embodying the improvements of my invention,
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed perspective of an extension blade; and
Fig. 1 is a similar view of one of the intermediate blades.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar .characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 10 designates the main body plate of my invention, the same having a tapering shank 11 extending V 12 to said base plate.
therefrom, said shank being riveted as at A handle 13 is carried by the shank 11.
The blade holder includes a channel-iron 14e having the outer marginal edges thereof formed with lateral oppositely arranged flanges 15, -the free margins of said flanges being in spaced relation to permit passage therebetween of a retaining screw 16, said screw having a head 17 engageable beneath the anges and a wing nut 18 engageable with the shank of the blade to be retained thereby.
In view of the fact that all of the blades with the exception of the extension blades are identical in construction, I shall describe but one of the same. Referring specifically to Fig. 4 I have illustrated one of the intermediate blades, the same having a base body portion 20 offset as at 21 to engage one side of the channel 14, said body, beyond the offset portion being extended a's at 22 and bifurcated as at 23 to be engaged by one of the screws 16. This is best shown in Fig. 1. The blade is designated 24 and is formed along one margin of the base 20, said blade 24: having a cutting edge inclined toward the front end of the base portion 20. The front end of said base portion is rounded as at 25 and serves as a guide as well as a carrier or body for the blade. The marginal edge of the body 20 engages the blade and serves as a guide, said margin being brought into alinement with one `of the various graduations 26 formed on one of the iianges 15.
I provide extension blades relatively oppositely arranged at the free ends of the channel 14, said blades being provided to increase the scope of the cutting action of the device. One o f the extension blades, in this instance the left hand blade, is shown in detail in Fig. 3. Referring specifically y,to 3, I provide a cutting element embodying a base supporting portion 28 having a blade 29 formed along one free margin thereof, said blade having a slanting cutting edge. The body 28 is formed with a vertical laterally extending channel member 30, the top portion of which is formed with a slot 31, said slot opening at one free end yof the channel member.
The cutting elements, when assembled are mounted preferably as shown in Fig. 1, all
tion to the arrangement of'the extension blades, said blades -`being 'relatively oppor sitely disposed, y that is, the blades thereof being arranged so as to more readily coperate `with the intermediate cutting elements..
In many cases the extension blades ydo not need to be used and may be leftout, at other' times o-nly those on the left or right depending on the pattern of the embroidery. In :Fig: l an illustration of one use`l of the device is shown by the dotted line design y above the cutting elements, portions of the design proper being designated 33, assuming different-shapes,the working thread' being designated '3l vand extending before being j cut between. said figures or designs.
The blades in use, are adapted to pass 'bef tween the figures of the desiO'n and sever the threadsil. `Of course, I do not limit myself to theuse as specified but the' device is primarily designed for this purpose. I desire to direct attention to the arrangement of the cutting edges whereby danger of cutting the cloth-or other fabric is eliminated, only a smooth surface being presented to the cloth when the device is moved fthereover.
From the above description taken in con* nectionwith thef accompanying drawings, it
is thoughtthat a clear yand comprehensive` understanding of thev construction, operation' and advantages of my invention may be had, and while vI have" shown and described the device as embodying al specificI structure, I desire f that it be lunderstood that such changes maybe made in said structure as do not depart from vthe spirit andl scope of the invention as claimed.
l inwardly directed flanges to form a slot, and
rcutting' yelements comprising channel: porrelatively adjustable. I desire to call atten# l 2. In a knife of the class described, the
combination of a base plate .having a channel member thereon provided' with spaced a plurality of cutting elements provided with offsetpontions to engage said channels, said offset portions being extended lto bridge thefianges, andin'eans engaging with the flanges and said extended portions to adjustably maintain said cutting elements' on said base plate. j
3.In a knife of the class described, the combination'v/'ithl a base plate havinga channel member thereon provided with inwaidly dire'cted'flanges Ain* spaced relation to form aslot, and a plurality of interme; y diate cutting elements adjus'tablyv arrangedon said channel-niember.v of end extensionv tions, base portionsysaid channel `portions being provided withslots, means engaging "witlisaid flanges and said channels to adjustably maintain said extension' cutting elements in position, and the base portions of said cutting elements having vi/'ertically ar ranged blades.'
4L. In a knife of the class described, the combination of a base'plate having a chan- "nel-iron arranged thereon, said channelsiron v being formed with a pair of spaced parallel inwardly directed flanges for providing a lslot between' them, a cutting elementassociated with'said base plate `having means to engage said channel, and mea-ns extending through saidcutting elements and engage' i able with said flanges for adjustably mains Having thus fully described my inven'" tion, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters -I-)-atent,-is:--
l. In aknife, the combination of a plate having a 'channel member thereon provided with=inwardly directed flanges, said flanges f' being arranged in spaced relation to form a slot, a plurality of cutting elements'having bifurcated ends, said cutting elements being:
offset to engage saidchannel, and securing screws extending through-the -bi'furcated portions'ofsaidcutting elements and between'said -an'gesfor the purpose specified.
taining said cutting element on said plate.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base plate Vhaving achannel member thereon, a plurality of in'terme'- diate-independently and relatively,l adjust kable/blades carried' bysaidl channel meinber, andk a pair'of extension bladesl carried In testimony whereof, -Il'aflix my'signature by the freefends of saidichannel'lmember, l'9K5 said extension blades ybeing relativelyad j ustable-'and adj ustablev relative the; intermediate blade.
hereto; i
