To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL L. Hoot), a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vichita Falls, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crossing-Grates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in crossing gates and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved mechanism coacting therewith whereby the gate is caused to assume a closed position automatically and under the' influence of rolling stock.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a gate of this general character includ ing novel and improved means whereby said gate is caused to automatically assume an open or elevated position after the rolling stock has passed over the crossing.
The invention consists in the details of a construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved crossing gate whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive-and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the bet ter understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating crossing gates and an operating means therefor arranged in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the second position of the gates being indicated by dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in top plan illustrating certain details of the invention as herein included;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings T denotes a trackway having positioned at opposite sides thereof the longitudinally 3 caused to assume a closed or lowered position.
Extending longitudinally of the rail of the track-way T positioned adjacent the outer side thereof is an elongated bar B extending a predetermined distance beyond the location of the gates G. The bar 13 has its upper longitudinal edge normally supported a distance above the top of the adjacent rail of the trackway through the medium of the rock arms 3. Each of the shafts a is rota;
tably supported by the clamping members 5 held in applied position to the base flanges of the adjacent rail of the trackway by the clamping bolts 6. The shaft 4 is capable of free rotation and the armfi is constantly urged upwardly to maintain the upper marginal portion of the bar 13 normally above the adjacent rail of the traclzway through the medium of the spring 7 encircling the intermediate portion of the shaft 4e and having one end suitably anchored to the shaft el and its opposite end bearing against a wall of the recess 8 produced in the inner face of a member 5. Both of the members are provided with the recesses 8 and which recesses are adapted to aline when the members 5 are in appliedpositionp The recesses 8 afi'ord an enlarged bore to accommodate the spring 7, hereinbefore referred to.. Each of the shafts 1 is operatively engaged with the bar B through the medium of the rock arm 10 whereby itwill be perceived that as the bar B is depressed by contact with the upper edge thereof the wheels of the rolling stock or shafts 1 will be rotated or rocked sufficiently to cause the gates G to assume the closed or lowered position, 7
as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and full lines in Fig. 2.
One end portion of the bar B has its upper margin arranged 011 a predetermined downward incline, as indicated at 11 for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident while the opposite end portion has coacting therewith a supplemental bar B. The up per marginal portion of the bar B is also disposed on a downward incline as indicated at 12. The bar B is supported by the rock arms 14 which are mounted in a manner identical as has been set forth relative to each of the arms 3 with the exception that the arms'la are disposed upwardly on an inward incline and in a direction reverse to the direction of inclination of the rock arms 3. The inclined portion 11 of the bar B and the supplemental bar B may be of any desired length although I have found in practice that the same should be preferably to obtain the best results. It will also be self-evident that by the use of the supplemental bar B the gates may be caused to lower or assume a closed position irrespective of the direction in which a train may be traveling.
