. an improved connection between the posts of a bed and the spring frame, which will eliminate entirely the side rails usually connected to the posts and supporting the a spring frame.

A further object is to provide a connection which will permit of lateral adjustment to adapt the bed for varying widths of the spring frames.

A further object is to provide a coupling or connection of simple construction and one which will be strong and durable.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.

The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, 2 represents the bed posts, connected by the usual cross rail 3. These posts, as usual in metal beds, are made of tubing and generally side rails are provided, connected at the ends by couplings to the posts, the spring frame resting on these rails when the bed is set up.

To dispense with the ordinary side rails and provide a three piece bed, I mount castings 3' on the tubing 4 which forms the side rails of the spring frame. The angle bar 5 rests upon these castings and forms the end rail of the spring frame, the fabric 6 being connected to this rail. There will Specification of Letters Patent.

be four of these castings, one at. each corner of the bed. Each casting is provided with a transverse slot 7, adapted to receive a threaded bolt 8 that passes through the wall of the post and is provided with a nut 9 within the post which engages one side wall thereof, while the end of the bolt is screwed against the opposite wall and thereby the bolt is rigidly held in a horizontal position. The outer end of the bolt is provided with a nut 9 that is seated against the walls of the slot 7 when the spring frame is clamped to the posts, and a set screw 10 is mounted in each post near the top of the casting 3 and has its head in engagement with the vertical flange of the angle bar 5. By turning this set screw in and out, the spring frame can be steadied and prevented from swaying by reason of the screws serving as braces bearing against the upper part of the side rail supporting brackets.

In setting up the bed, the transverse slots allow a range of adjustment of the bolts 8 therein and adapt the spring frame to head and foot posts set at greater or less distances apart. This construction entirely eliminates the ordinary side rails, the tubing 4 of the spring frame performing all the functions of these rails and the number of parts of the bed and the expense of manufacture considerably reduced. The castings mounted at the corners of the spring frame may be made in various sizes, and the provision for lateral adjustment may be modified by varying the length of the slot or changing its location, and in various ways the details of construction may be changed and still be within the scope of my invention.

It will be observed that the socket for the side rails 4L is at the lower end of the upright web of the casting and beneath the bolt which secures the bracket to the post so that it will abut against the post and relieve the clamping bolt of the torsional strain which the bolt otherwise would be subjected to. It also causes the post to re ceive end thrust of the side bars in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the side bars and thus affords greater rigidity in the connection between the side rails and end upright posts.

By having the adjusting screws 10 anchored or threaded in the posts with their heads bearing against the angle plates 5 they can be adjusted as frequently as desired without in any degree marking or defacing the post,

and being attached to the post they will serve their function whatever be the size of mattress frame used in connection with the posts and will afford the same positive abutment for the frame whatever be its adadjustment sidewise of the head and foot posts which would not be the case if they were carried by the mattress frame as in the latter case the heads of the bolts would have only the relatively small surface afiorded by the arc of curvature of the post to bear against.

1. T he combination with the tubular end posts and the side rails, of end supporting brackets for the side rails, each consisting of an upright web portion having a centrally disposed transversely extending slot to re ceive a clamping bolt and provided at its lower end below the bolt opening with a socket to receive the end of the side rail and bear against the end post, a clamping bolt e tending from the post and through the transwrsely extending slot of the web portion and having a nut to secure the bracket, the transversely extending slots of the upright web portions accommodating the supporting brackets and connecting rails to head and foot posts set at greater or less distances apart.

2. The combination with the tubular end posts and the side rails, of end supporting brackets for the side rails, each consisting of an upright web portion having a centrally disposed transversely extending slot to receive a clamping bolt and provided at its lower end below the bolt opening with a socket to receive the end of the side rail and bear against the end post, a clamping bolt extending from the post through the transversely extending slot of the web portion and having a nut to secure the bracket, and adjusting screws threaded in the end posts and having their heads bearing against the upper ends of the brackets.
