Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Sept.. iS, iilli?.
Application led May 15, 1916. Serial No. 97,548.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLLIS T. Wins'ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Direction-Signals, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in signals and more especially to devices for signaling t0 or from moving vehicles. It is more especially intended for use with automobiles, but it may also be used for traflic or like signals.
My invention will be .understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which similar parts are indicated by corresponding reference symbols throughout the several views.
Figure l is a View in front elevation of this improved signal in the extended or indicating position.
Fig. 2 is a view in' side elevation with the signal in retracted position.
Fig. 3 is a view in section taken on the line 3-3 on Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 4 is a view in section taken on the line -lon Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3, of a modified form.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of Fig. 5.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2., and 3, the signal is intended to simulate the human hand, and in order to stow same in as small a casing as practicable this hand is preferably made of a plurality of members mounted on a common pivot.
In the hand shown the member 1 shows the index finger of the hand and 2 shows the other three fingers of the hand, said fingers being represented in the closed position. These two members 1 and 2 are mounted on a pivot pin 3. These two members, 'when in the retracted position, are inclosed in a flat rectangular box B, having the top, bottom and three sides closed, the fourth side being closed by the flange plate 5 and the bead 6, which project from the member I and form a cover for the open side of the box. This side of the box is provided with a shoulder 4 to serve as a stop for the mem ber 1 when the signal is thrown to the horizontal position, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In order that the parts composing the hand may be stowed. in a Small space, the
for instance having the pin 7 project from the member 2 and engaging in a slot 8 in themember 1.
10 represents a wire or cord connected to the heel of the member 1 in rear of the pivot pin 3, as shown, which cord or wire may be connected to any suitable operating device, as the ring 11. An antifriction roller 12 may be provided for this wire or cord l0, and any suitable shock absorber may be provided, such as the coil spring 18 mounted in a loop of the cord or wire, which coil spring will tend to prevent excessive strain on the members of the signal when the cord or wire is sharply pulled, thus rendering it practicable te use light sheet metal in their construction.
It will be obvious that the signal may be moved to the horizontal position, as shown in Fig. l, by a pull on the cord or wire l0, and may be allowed to swing to the closed position by gravity, or the closing movement may be edected by a direct push on the wire 10; but automatic means may be used for bringing the'signal to the retracted position, such as the spring 9, which is wrapped about the pivot 3 and engages the interior of the casing and also engages the flange 5, as shown in Fig. l.
So as -to prevent rattling, I provide a spring 'ladapted to engage the point of the member 1 when the latter is in the retracted position shown in Fig. 3. In order 1 to further prevent rattling, a lining le of felt. or other soft material maybe applied to the inner rear face of the casing, and the flange 16 may be provided on the member 2 to engage said lining and to prevent the same from being cut by the rear face of the member 2. This casing may be attached to the vehicle, the post, or other support in any convenient way, as by the metal strips 30 and 31.
It will be seen that the flange 5 and rib (i serve as a cover for the open side of the casinff when the signal is in the retracted position, and this casing will keep out dust,
