END-GATE FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Ormnnns STELoW SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kirksville, in the county of Adair, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to a make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in wagon end gates, and particularly to fasteners therefor.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a device for holding an end gate in closed position, said holding device being so constructed that it will not be jarred into released position by the jolting of the wagon.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a fastening device for an end gate that automatically tightens when moved into operative or holding position.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing there is shown an end gate consisting of two sections 10 and 11, hinged together at 12. The ends of the sections of the gate are adapted to engage between the cleats 13 carried by the sides of the wagon box 14. Secured to the section 10 and 6X- tending across the section 11, is an arm 15, the free end of which is formed with an open-ended slot 16. Secured to the outer face of the free end of the said arm, and extending around the said slot, is a flat metal U-shaped plate 17. One end of this plate, preferably the lower arm thereof, is turned outwardly at right angles, as seen at 18. is disposed across the section, is an opening 19, through which extends a bolt 20. On the outer end of the bolt is formed a radially extending weighted handle member 21, the inner portion of which projects from the diametrically opposite side of the end of the bolt, thereby forming a transverse member 22, which is arranged to extend transversely of the slot 16, and bear on the outer face of the U-shaped plate 17. The opposite, or threaded end of the bolt, projects through the other side of the section 11, and is engaged in a nut 23. Secured to the rear face of the said section, and formed with an opening 24:, through which the threaded end of the bolt passes, is an elongated strip of metal 25, the end at one side of the nut being bent outwardly at right angles, as shown at 26, for engagement with one side face of the nut to prevent turning of the same, when the bolt is turned. It will be noted that the thread of the bolt is lefthand.

When the parts are in the position shown in the sectional view, Fig. 4, it will be noted that the bolt is slightly Withdrawn through the nut, but the handle member is resting on the lug or outturnecl portion of the U- shaped plate. In this position, the sections of the end gate can be swung on their hinges and removed from the wagon. When again swung into proper position between the cleats, the handle is grasped and turned through the greater part of a circle until stopped against the lower edge of the said lug. In thus turning the handle, the bolt is driven through the nut so that it will firmly clamp the section 11 of the gate and the free end of the arm 15 together. By reason of the fact that the bolt tightens when turned into operative or looking position, it efiectively prevents any movement toward release by the jarring or jolting of the wagon. The fact that the handle must be turned through the greater part of a circle, further insures that the same will not be jarred into released position.

The tightening of the bolt also serves to more eiiectively clamp the parts of the gate together, thus preventing any rattling thereof.
