To all whom it concern; 7
Be it known that I, Hanvny REED, ;a citizen of the United States, residing at New Yoi k city, the county of New York, State of New York, have imiented .certa-in new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Trap-Nests; and I .do hereby declare the following ,to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ,enable others skilled in the art :to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to improvements hens nests and has for its object to provide a collapsible structure, preferably of all metal construction and [embodying one or more nests as may be desirable.
It is further a purpose of the present invention to provide a structure in which the several parts may veniently folded in novel mannerfor stor-' age orshipment and as. readily set up for use.
Still another object 4 the'invention is to embodied mechanism prov de .an appliance in which is a noyel arrangement of trapping through the medium of which the hens may be mprisoned .in the respective nesting compartments until released by the attendant, the structure thus affording a reliable and effective medium for pedigree breeding and for obtaining an accurate record of the in dividual layers. 7
WVith the above vand .Qther bjects of similar nature in view, the invention resides in the construction, combination and. arrangement of parts, set forth in the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective view of a nesting appliance constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental rear elevation.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the appliance collapsed.
Fig. 6 is a detail 66 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a detail section taken on the line -7 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 8 is a detached View of one of the brackets and the supporting bar in folded position.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing the improved nestsection taken on the line Specification of Letters-Patent.

. ppl va w ampules. -7 e ial No ream ing appliance is indicated generally at 10 and c t of a su sta t ally ang la housing including 1 2', front wall 13, rear wall l gand end walls 15. flonnecting the top wall ll with the rear wall 14, and the front wall 13 with the bottom wall 12 are hinges 16 the front and rear walls being thus free to fold re.- speetively upon the bottom and top w alls when'it desired to collapse the housing for any purpose. Formed on the up. er-edge f the front wall 13 is an outwarc directed flange 17, .on which the .top wall .11 is supported, said flange and .the top wall having therein'registering apertures through which connecting bolts 1.8 are removably passed. The rear and bottom walls are .alsodetachably iqonlleeted, the latter havingan integral flange 19 carrying a plurality o f'turn buttons .20 passed .removably through slots 21 in the rear wall .lland secured .asis evident. The lend Walls 1,5 are secured within the housing by providing ,on their upper and lower ge'dge spaced tongues 2.3, said tongue ing bent cir u a y thr ug sp d peng f orm d i e adjacent wall and t serving to hingedly connect the end walls he e i h] Th r i fu e pr vide a spaced intervafls within the housing a plurality of transverse partitions 25'.thereby forming a plur i y f c mp m t ea h of which .u wif le Ia'nes Th s par i ion a e a ran ed With nth hou ng and hinged-1y connected to the top and "bottom Wal th re .i th sam mann as t en walls l5. Access is had to each of the 'coman opening 27- forrned in the front wall 13, while secured adjacent the lower corners of said opening are brackets 28 each provided with an open bearing 29, a shaft 30 carrying a trapping platform 31 being removably pivoted in said bearings whereby the platform is free to swing upwardly and close the entrance opening as will subsequently appear.
At the inner end of the platform 31 there is provided an angular extension 32 the free edge portion of which is suitably rolled to produce a perch 33, a hen when entering the related compartment stepping thereupon and tilting the platform upwardly in Which position it is automatically secured by means of a spring catch 3 lof any suitable design. A buffer 35 arranged below the catch 34 serves to prevent unnecessary noise when closing the trapping platform.
' Copies of this patent may be obtained for In order to support the platforms 31 in position to project horizontally from the front wall 13 there are provided a plurality of brackets 36 the innerends of which are removably engaged as at 37 in openings formed in the front wall, while supported at their outer ends and connected thereto. by.
means of hinge 38, is an angle bar 89. Then in open position the platforms 31 rest upon the angle bar 39 and permit of a hen stepping thereon and passing through the related entrance opening, she then stepping'upon the perch 33 and by her weight tilting the platform to close said opening. The catch 3a having operated automatically tolock the platform in closed position, the henwill be effectively trapped in the compartment until released by the attendant, at which time her leg band number or other designating mark is noted and recorded to indicate that an egg has been laid by that particular individual, It is, of course, understood that suitable neste ing material is placed in the compartment to provide a soft surface on which the eggsai'e deposited. I I p i In order to gain access to the nesting conipartments and release the hens, there is provided in the rear wall 14; a plurality of openings 40, closed by means of hinged doors 41, the hens being withdrawn bythe attendant through these openings and their numbers noted. To permit resetting of the trapping platforms from therear of the ap pliance, a small opening 42 is placed therein through which a finger of the attendant may be passed to engage and release the latter. In collapsing the appliance, the brackets 36 together with the angle bar 39 are removed and folded as shown in Fig. 8 and the platforms 31 next removed from the bearings 29. The bolts 18 are-then removed and the turn-buttons 20 released so that the rear wall 1 1 may be folded upon the top wall 11 and the front wall 13 folded beneath the bottom wall 12. The top and rear walls are now? moved longitudinally with respect to the bottom and front walls, the end walls and partitions swinging on their hinged connections with the top and bottom walls and the entire structure being collapsed as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. There is thus provided an extremely compact article which requires the minimum of space for storage and shipment as'the case may be. It will be evident that an appliance of this nature may be set up and collapsed at will with the ex penditure of but little time and labor.
It may further be stated that this device is preferably of all metalconstruction, so that it may be easily and thoroughly cleaned and will afiord nohiding places for vermin. What I claim is A collapsible nest structure including a top Wall and a'bottorn wall, a front wall hinged "to the bottom wall and foldable therebeneatln'a rear wall hinged to thet'op wall and foldable thereupon, means detachably securing the front and rear walls tothe bottom and top walls rcspectively, end walls hingedly connecting the top and bottom walls for folding movement toward each other, said; front wall having an entrance opening therein, a trapping platfon'n removably pivoted in the entrance opening and tiltable by a hen to close the latter, means for automatically locking the platform in closed position, and brackets 'removably engaged with said i said platform in its open position. p p I v In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
