Description
ms. NELSON. PISTOL SWORD.-
APPLICATION FILED MAY23,19I7- LfiGA'M. PatentedSept. 18,1917.
NICHOLAUS B. NELSON, OF EAST CHICAGO, INDIANA.
PISTOL-SWORD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1917.
Application filed May 23, 1917. Serial No. 170,397.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAUS B. NELSON, a subject of the King of Hungary residing at East Chicago, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pistol-Swords, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a pistol sword possessing great strength and readily employed as a saber and pistol simultaneously, the hand grip of the device being arranged for the ready use thereof.- v
A further object of the device is to provide a fire arm having a blade carried thereby and provided with a handle or grip for ready use in using the blade as a sword as well as in operating the fire arm.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the dra ing forming a part of this application and .in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with parts broken away and with the same illustrated by dotted lines in its loading position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken upon lines III-III of Fig. ,1, and,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken upon line IVm-IV of Fig. 1.
The present device broadly consists of a fire arm in the form of a revolver 10 having a barrel 11 and a cartridge magazine 12, the main casting 13 of the revolver being provided with a forwardly projecting blade 14 positioned beneath and parallel with the barrel 11.
A substantially rectangular handle 15 is provided for the device having the casting 13 pivoted within an interrupted corner portion thereof, the said casting being pivoted as at 16 for permitting the reloading of the magazine 12 when the castingis moved upon its pivot to the position illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing and in substantially the usual manner rovided for reloading a revolver. The casting 13 is provided with a spring latch 17 of substantially the usual form at the upper rear corner thereof for engaging a keeper lug 18 of the upper side 19 of the handle 15, the two sides forming the casing for the lock mechanism, not shown, the trigger however, being illustrated at 20.
The handle 15 forms a holder for the blade 14:, the side 19 of the handle being adapted to be grasped by the operator for placing his fingers within the main opening 21 of the handle depression 22 being arranged in the inner face of the handle side 19 for accommodating the fingers while the lower side 23 of the handle 15 forms a guard for the hand.
The side 19 is arranged with smaller openings 2 1 and 25 longitudinally therein, the trigger '20 being arranged within the last named opening while the fingers of the oporator are positionable in both of the said openings 21 and 25 when using the fire arm 10. A spring pressed catch 26 is carried by the handle 15 adjacent the lower inner corner of the casting 13 for normal engagement within a keeper socket 27 of the casting when the revolver is in its normal closed. position. When it is desired to open the revolver for reloading the magazine 12, a slide plate 28 carried by the catch 26 is pulled rearwardly and the latch 17 being readily released by forcibly moving the casting 13 upon its pivot 16, the revolver 1S opened in the usual manner and may be readily closed for automatically rengaging the catch 26 and latch 17 for retaining the revolver in its operative arrangement. The shape of the handle 15is such that the hand of the operator may readily be shifted to obtain a firm, comfortable grip when using either the firearm or the sword. A strong and serviceable weapon is provided which is both adapted for use as a fire arm and as a sword, the structure being easy and inexpensive to manufacture and possessing great strength.
What I claim as new is: v
1. A pistol sword comprising a rectangle lar handle having a finger receiving opening therein, a revolver casting pivoted within a corner portion of the handle, a retaining latch and catch at opposite sides of the casting.adapted for normally maintaining the revolver closed, and a forwardly projecting blade carrifid by thecasting adjaccntthe barrel of t 'e revolver-Z 2. A fire arm oomprising a rectangular handle having an inter rupted corner portion with finger receiving openings adjacent the said cutaway portion, means carried by the finger engaghandle and casting adapted for retaining tl revolver in its operative closed position, an a blade forwardly projecting from the sai casting arranged parallel and beneath tl barrel of the revolver.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signatu NIGHOLAUS B. NELSON.
