HOG-FEEDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 18, 191 '7.
Application filed June 10, 1916. Serial No. 102,889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EMMET GORE and GEORGE S. HENSON, citizens of the United. States of America, residing at Rushville, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain useful Improvements in Hog-Feeders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in hog feeders, one object of the invention being the provision of a device adapted to be operated by the rooting action of the hog to dispense the food from a container or reservoir, said food being either in a liquid, semiliquid, or dry state.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of this character which contains few parts, and is therefore not readily placed out of commission, but which is so constructed as to be easily operated.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container provided with the present device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the present attachment and the bottom of the container.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the container, which may be constructed to contain any character of food that it is desired to feed to the hogs, the same being provided with an outlet opening 6.
Mounted upon the inside of the container adjacent the opening 6 is a frame or spider 7, while disposed to depend from the bottom thereof is a frame or spider 8, the attaching portions 9 and 10 of such frames or-spiders being retained fixedly together and to the bottom of the container by means of the bolts 11.
Each of the frames is provided with the respective stem guiding portions 12 and 13 tion of the valve upon the stem, and at the 1 same time regulates the distance that the same may be elevated above the opening 6.
Mounted upon the lower end of the stem is a disk 17 which is preferably oval in cross section, thesame being disposed to be engaged' by the nose of the hog during the rooting thereof so that the valve may be elevated and thus automatically dispense the food through the opening 6 either upon the ground or in a trough, as may be found desirable.
It is evident that the present attachment may be quickly and easily attached to any form of container, and being composed o1 few parts, and'such parts being made of comparatively heavy material, the same will be thoroughly efficient, practical and durable.
What we claim as new is 1. In a hog feeder, a container having an outlet opening, two frames attached respectively upon either side of the outlet openlng, each frame being provided with a stem guide, a stem slidably mounted in said guide, a valve detachably mounted upon the stem for movement between the outlet of the con: tainer and one of the frames, and a nose engaging member mounted upon the free end of the stem.
2. The combination with a container having an outlet opening through the bottom thereof, of a valve controlling mechanism therefor, including two frames, one disposed to rest upon the inner surface of the bottom, and the other disposed to engage the under surface of the bottom, both being adjacent the outlet opening of the container, fastening devices piercing the bottom and the ad-' jacent portions of the frames to hold the frames securely together and upon the bottom, each frame being provided with a stem guiding opening therein,-a stem mounted for sliding movement in said openings of the frames and projecting through the outlet opening of the container, a disk valve havinga tubular portion slidably mounted upon the stem, means piercing the tubular portion for engaging the stem to lock the valve upon the stem, said valve being disposed to rest upon the bottom of the container to close the opening thereof and being limited in its upward movement by the frame, and a disk fixed upon the lower end of the stem and below the depending frame.
