To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUiLFoRD C. BAoooK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Evanston, 'Cook county, Illinois, have invented a'n Improvement in Boxes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to boxes and the like and is intended to provide a novel con- Y struction of box blank and box and a method of making the sam e Among other objects,
tended to provide a simple and economical to manufacture; which shall be susceptible of manufacture upon automatic or partly automatic machinery; shall be strong and durable and preferably tight.
' For the purpose of illustration the inven tion will be described herein as embodied in, and employed in the manufacture of, a sectional box having oppositely disposed cleat edfside sections and additional side sections which are not cleated and which may be disconnected from the structure of the box ex cept as they are held in place by the frictional grip of their parts.
The character of the invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1. is a side or edge elevation of an illustrative form of box blank.

The box blank comprises side sheets 1 and 2 conveniently of gum veneer, havin respecsuitable woo ire binding 5 or the like, preferably in a continuous length, is secured to the side sections, as by staples 6, 6 straddling the wires, passing through the side sheets 1 and 2, and penetrating the cleats 3 and 4.
When the blank comprising the side sections 1 and 2, is folded together, the cleats 3 and 4 substantially contact lengthwise as shown in Fig. 3.
To provide additional sides of the box loose strips 7, 8 may be employed and these are preferabl of comparatively heavy stock to serve as stiiening or strengthening members. Strips 7 are indicated by dotted lines the invention is inin Fig. 1 to show the relations which they would have to the remaining parts of the blank preparatory to folding. As shown in Fig.' 3 the strips 7, 8 are embraced between overlapping margins of the side sheets 1 and 2, these overlap margins being indicated at 9, 10, 11 and 12 in Fig. 1. Preferably these overlap margins have widths substantially equal to the thicknesses of the stri s 7 to be overlapped thereby. The edges o the side sheets 1 and 2 in the specific type of blank shown in Fig. 1 are spaced apart a sufficient distance to receive between them the strip 7 and to permit theparts to be folded into the overlapping relation shown in Fig. 3. In order to tension the wire binding over the corners of the box and thereby assist in holding the strips 7 in place, it is preferred that the space between adjacent edges of the sheets l and 2 be somewhat greater than the width of theA strip 7 but less than the width of said strip 7 plus the combined thicknesses of the sheets 1 and 2.' This arrangement requires the wires to be put under tension as the parts are folded into the positions of Fig. 3 and in such tensioning the wires may be forced to embed themselves moreor less in the corners, likewise when 'the fre ends 13, 13 of the binding wires are twisted or otherwise secured together to complete the closure of the box they may tension the wires over the corners adjacent the stifening strip 8.
The box of the drawing is desirably flexible and elastic and may be considerably distorted without material tendency to rupture its parts, since the distorting strains are resisted largely by the tensile strength of the wire.
One practicable method of making a box such as that described is as follows: A pair of side sheets 1 and 2 of the same dimensions are assembled with cleats 3 and 4 of the same dimensions. rlhe side sheets are spaced apart edgewise a distance slightly greater than the combined widths of the cleats and 4; and the cleats are spaced apart endwise a distance substantially equal to the space between the side sheets plus a distance equal to double the thickness of the strip 7 which is intended to be interpose between the sides 1 and 2. These relative positions provide for the overlap margins 10 and 11 and for tensioning wires over the corners. Similar overlap margins'9 and 12 are left at the outer ends of the side sheets 1 and 2.
A blank such as We describe the parts of Which are of vuniform size, is very simple and economical to manufacture and when the type described may be assembled with appropriate spacing devices and fed rapidly through a stapling ma` chine which secures the Wires to the parts in any practicable manner.
Then when the blank is ready for folding into box form loose strips 7, 8 may be properly inserted and then when the box is folded around the strips so placed, the Wires may be tensioned to hold the strips in position. If desired one more additional fastening means such as the nails 15, 16, 17 and 18, employed as shown in Fig. 3 or in any other practicable manner, may be utilized.
It is to be understood that this invention is not limited to the particular construction, organization and method of manufacture hereinbefore described for illustration. On the contrary, the relations of the box parts and the materials therefor may be modified in form and dimensions and the method of making the box modified in Various particulars all of which Will appear to those skilled in the art. Furthermore, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed separately in the combinations and sub-combinations defined in the following claims.
